Ken Levine: The Future of Gaming Is In the PC

BioShock [http://www.amazon.com/BioShock-pc/dp/B000MK694E/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1288295734&sr=8-4] creator Ken Levine says gamers who want to look into the future of gaming should "buy a PC," because it "will always be the place that drives innovation."

Ken Levine is a PC. How do I know? Because he said so. A lot of gamers are reluctant to pick a pony in the long-running PC versus console debate (or at least pretend to be) but Levine has no such qualms, a fact he made very clear in a short piece for Kotaku's ongoing PC Gaming Week [http://kotaku.com/5675559/the-future-of-pc-gaming-according-to-the-lead-creator-of-bioshock].

"As a gamer, I'm a PC. I like the kind of games you can play on it. I like that designers know they have your full attention, so they feel comfortable EXPECTING your full attention," he wrote. "I like the ergonomics of the thing, the mouse and keyboard, the effortless transition from gaming to browsing to typing. I'm an alt-tab kind of guy."

Even the most ardent PC supporters have to admit that its share of the mainstream gaming market has been reduced to a small fraction of what it once was thanks to the advent of consoles, but Levine thinks that the PC as a platform is still a very important part of the industry. "The PC will always be the place that drives innovation," he continued. "The PC is the place where great game developers are born, even - and maybe especially - where great console game developers are born. Call of Duty [http://www.amazon.com/Halo-Combat-Evolved-Xbox/dp/B00005NZ1G/ref=sr_1_2?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1288295845&sr=1-2]... PC developers first."

One of the big draws of the PC is the "low barrier of entry," which lets fledgling developers pursue their ideas without needing any kind of official approval. Most of those ideas are terrible, he said, but sometimes you end up with something like Minecraft [http://store.steampowered.com], projects that revolutionize the industry and take it to entirely new, unforeseen places.

"If you want to know the future of gaming, buy a PC. And pay attention," he wrote. "Because above all, that thing on your desk is a crystal ball."

Levine and the rest of the gang at BioShock Infinite [http://www.irrationalgames.com/], which is expected to come out sometime in 2012.

Ahahahahahahahaha... good stuff.

What about Nintendo, Capcom, Square Enix, Sony Santa Monica, Naughty Dog, Rockstar, Insomniac, Atlus and Sega? Console developers first. But I guess they don't count because they don't fit into his argument.

This guy is talking out of his ass.

The answer is very simple: where does games on consoles are made from? PC's !

What's the only platform that delivers Mods for FREE: PC's !

i don't need to go further...

Ah well, next week there will probably be someone saying that consoles are the future. Then a week later someone will say that "PC's are the way forward". Then a week after that "PC gaming is dying". Feels like this may just go on and on and on with no outcome.

Good god, I thought Levine was smarter than to put out such an obvious piece of flame-bait. Maybe I was wrong. Just watch as this thread gets filled with Console v.s. PC flame-wars. Any second now... Any second...

You can sort of see where he is coming from. I think the fact that the PC is less mainstream allows the developers to be more experimental and take risks, without having to worry to much about a loss of sales

Sure hope not. I don't really think you can say that "X is the future".

I still don't see the point in buying a computer that only serves entertainment purposes. When I buy a PC, I get a tool that I can game, work, and do almost anything with. I've never owned a console and probably never will. In fact, I hate consoles for making gaming ever more simplified, dumb and down-toned so that every 9 year old kid with a controller can play them.

Riiight, because more people playing games is a bad thing.

All console developers started on a PC operating system. Consoles are just simplified PCs. And that's what he's saying here. All of the big developers we'll be seeing in the future will have gotten their start on the PC as well. It's an unrestricted medium for new ideas, whereas consoles tend to play it safe and re-hash game concepts.
Dude, that's not even close to what he's saying. That's what you think, and as such, it's what you interpret from his comments.

More people playing games is fine. However it is a fact that many newer PC games are simplified and not as deep as old PC games used to be. The reason for this is that most PC games nowadays are released on consoles too, and therefore have to be adapted to the lowest common denominator. Meaning 4 button controllers and 9 year old kids.
