I find usually that when an anime is set in Japan with a purely Japanese cast of characters and is stereotypically "anime" (over the top, moe, highschool) it tends not to do so well when dubbed. Shows which feature and international cast of characters and are set in a realistic setting do tend to translate well into dubs.

So for example
Thing that are good dubbed:
Black Lagoon
Ghost in the Shell (I realize that its set in Japan with a Japanese cast of characters but meh)
Jormangund

Things that are not as good dubbed:
Madoka
Azumanga Dioh
Clannad

One exception I have though is Persona: The Animation.

I feel like if they made Satsuki and her family have British accents it would have made up for the lack of authority in her voice.

How bad is it? I haven't watched it, but I hear horror stories. Mostly about it being excessively rape-y.
It's not. It's a really fun show to watch with some great characters and action. The rapey-ness (?) complaint mainly comes from people who saw the first episode and thought was indicative of the show as a whole. It's not. Yes there are uncomfortable bits, but, for the most part, they're meant to be. I'll admit Senketsu's first appearance in the first episode was a bit iffy, but not really gratuitous, but again it was likely meant to be uncomfortable to watch. That being said, I totally understand people being put off by it.

OT: As I mentioned in my thread, I'm cautiously optimistic. So far it seems like it'll be a pretty high quality dub overall, considering the voices are pretty much the raw audio without mixing or the ambient sounds of the show. The only major gripes I have are Mako's voice and the pronunciation of most names, which I'll grant is a product of cross-language speech differences. It just seemed like the actors were really uncomfortable saying things like Kiryuin, Senketsu and Mankanshoku. I don't blame 'em.

I think better and more thorough voice casting should be a thing. And from a bigger pool of talent if at all possible. But the weeaboo hysterical whining going on in those YouTube comments certainly isn't going to help the anime watching community gain any respect. xD
Like the one comment said, if you really want to hear what a bad dub sounds like, listen to one from the 80s or early 90s.

On one hand I'm sincerely curious to check this series out and I may be prejudging because on the other I can't help but think "oh look another school/academy based series that looks juvenile and ecchi as all hell" "hey look her already revealing school girl uniform transforms into ..an even more exposing.."steel" battle outfit" eye roll. Maybe these Trigger guys got some ideas from the Skyrim modding community. And maybe I'm just beginning to outgrow this stuff. I could be off base though so I'll give it a shot to see what it has to offer.

Give it a watch. The dub may actually be a good introduction since a lot of dialogue is lost due to how dynamic the animation is in quite a few places and how quite a few of the jokes that tak ethe piss out of common shonen/magic girl/moe blob tropes are in the dialogue, which really doesn't come across in dubs. I didn't actually notice many of them until I rewatched clips of the show.

Ehhhhhhhhh, the hit and miss seems to be strong with this one. Everything was at least passable I suppose? Satsuki and Ryuko are alright (I stress the word alright, not good) though what the hell is with Senketsu? That sounds so off for him. I'll watch through it again a few times I think

I liked the voices of the Elite Four and Mako's original voice was kind of annoying so those are fine. It all comes down to the main two, the entire anime hinges on Satsuki and Ryuko's performances and that's no exaggeration. From the trailer they sound really hit and miss. One line I liked then another by the same character I didn't. The voices in the original were totally perfect.

Eh, it's all not as bad as it could have been and it will give me an excuse to rewatch Kill la Kill again once the English version starts. Good enough. Not sure if it really needed a dub but of course it got one because KLK was popular enough for it.

Anyway, when going into an English dub of any kind it's good to go in with an open mind. They usually try to put their own spin on the material it would be boring otherwise. Anyone who goes into an English dub expecting a word for word re-enactment of the subs they watched is going to be disappointed.

Wow, it's so weird hearing such different voices coming out of their mouths, but I might be able to get used to it. And this is coming from a guy who watches mostly dubs, too.

Just from Satsuki's first line, my first thought was, "She needs to be haughtier and more commanding". I can tell there's some effort put into it, it needs work. At least it isn't as bad as the voice acting in RWBY, AMIRITE

Gamagori's voice is well done though

not really, the only real sex offender is
the main villain
, and while there is fan service it goes both ways so i dont think anyone can argue the show objectifies women or anything like that

Senketsu's voice is the only one I don't like. It should have been Steve Blum in my opinion.

Thanks to neonsword13 for drawing this.

I hate this anime with a passion but I will defend that there is nothing wrong at all with the sexually suggestive content. For what it's worth it does play to its campy-ness and the rapey scenes are appropriate to demonize the main villain.

I want to kill myself after watching that. There are fandubs of this on youtube that are better.

Any dub in general makes my blood boil though, a consequence of lazy culture and a lack of respect for source material.

It's always a weird shift going from the original Japanese voice cast (that do an incredible job despite I can't understand a thing they're saying). Whilst a couple of voices sound off, after giving it some thought beforehand I was hard pressed to think of an VO that could get it right 100%. I'll just have to wait till I can actually see a scene or something before I can judge it's overall quality, but I'm happy that my favorite show this year is getting a dub this soon.

even with a decent voice cast it won't change the bad story or animation .. or that's that funimation is overcharging at $30 for 4 episodes.. or if you have money to blow, $60 for the limited edition dvd/blu-ray set

I'm still more or less shocked THIS got a dub. It's pretty "out there" compared to the rest of last years stuff. Then again Toonami has been more strict on bringing what's popular and over the top, so I expect to see this show up replacing a time slot soon.
That's basically what I thought, in terms of Toonami... I'm sure this will be shown after they get done with dubbed Attack on Titan and/or until Blue Exorcist gets done with its dubbed run, given how KLK is being dubbed by the same company...

With that said, I'll wait until I see a few dubbed episodes before I say anything else about the dub... Based on the cast list, it seems pretty mixed already...

I think you're confusing Funimation with Aniplex USA right now... Funimation usually charges $50-60 for just "one season" on Blu-Ray(/DVD combo pack)[footnote]Not counting their "Classics" line-up, which seem to "never" go over $30 (minus tax) for the complete series of something...[/footnote]while Aniplex USA charges close to $40-50 for just "a few episodes"... Although, they both tend to have limited editions to anime series for about $10-20 more, I guess... So, there's that...

sounds like you need to get yourself some new sources, there is only one character that commits any kind of sexual offence and it's the Primary villain. There is lots of fan service however, Just in case you couldn't tell, although it's incredibly well worked into the plot and by the end you won't even notice it. the biggest thing they show has going for it is how insane and frenetic it is. pretty much every single episode is like the finale of every other show.

I was really impressed by any of the English voices, a little disappointing because I always enjoy it when I don't have to keep taking my eyes off the action to read what they are saying. senketsus voice was absolutely terrible for the part, if it were me I would have tried to get Michael Ironside since he has the perfect voice for the character.
Yeah I don't know. There's more to sexual violence than rape, the anime sure does like to degrade a lot of its female characters.

I'm really split on it. On the other hand, it feels very mysogistic. On the other hand, the action and animation is wonderfully well-crafted. Every battle feels like the end-battle of your average anime, that truly is great, it's very high-octane.

I don't know, I'm going back to it with this dub to formulate my opinion better. These days I always watch dubs as I never just watch a show, I multi-task so I end up listening to large parts of the dialogue. Can't really do that with subs as I know zero Japanese.

As I mentioned in a related thread in OT, I am pretty ambivalent. I didn't expect much to begin with, however. It's an incredibly difficult anime to dub, I imagine.

All things considered, Nonon is perfect. That's about it though.
You never know though. I'm one of them guys who generally considers shows by Studio Shaft un-dub-able since they are embedded with so much Japanese culture references. And although the Dub is certainly not perfect, I was really pleasantly suprised that Sentai Filmworks managed to do a pretty good job of adapting Maria Holic into English a few months ago(although I must admit a lot of my like for it came from Monica Rial's amazing job as Maria).
So I am willing to give Aniplex the benefit of the doubt, at least until I can hear a full episode and get a proper opinion.
