A corporate executive/representative comes out and spouts some BS such to manipulate the mindspace of the consumer in a manner to increase sells of a particular product produced by that corporation, or, at the very least, to cast doubt on the viability of a competing product as sufficiently serving the consumer's needs and/or desires.
In other news, the sun rose this morning, and the mid-day sky is a wonderful azure during extremely fair weather conditions.
I'm not sure why so many people allow themselves to continuously get baited into mindless nerd-rage and religious warring over such statements; after all, that's precisely what the corporation wants, to get you all talking and fighting about the whole thing while they sit back and collect profit. At the very least, it throws an element of FUD(fear, uncertainty, and doubt, for those not familiar with the term) into the mix such to weaken the position of future sales of competing products. The effect is strongest on those new to video games. Of course, the strategy is fairly hit-or-miss in terms of successfulness, as it can back-fire horribly, but corporations have put much faith in such tactics to bolster their business because they see Microsoft as the prime example of how the technique can work (Microsoft has spent several decades perfecting their technique in this particular tactic).
