Hmmmmm, is it wrong that I'm kinda looking forward to him leaving? I couldn't stand MGS4
No I too am hoping that "rising" bombs. I can't stand his convoluted and redundant writing. Here's hoping it's a fascinating train-wreck of a game taboo.

Really now?

I wonder how he defines fail...

If he means commercial fail, that's pretty far-fetched, Any game with Kojima Production Label under it is bound to get at least 500k units worth of sales...

Critical fail perhaps? After all the criticism his games get, he's suddenly giving the notion to quit? After years of MGS cutscenes? After making Raiden the lead of MGS2? After releasing the MGS DGN?

A fail by gamers perhaps? What could Kojima possibly do to make his fans hate him? An MGS fighting game?

Come on Hideo, you're practically nearing Shigeru Miyamoto's level, you can't possibly be hated.

I must admit that I don't follow this japanese gentleman's business too closely, but isn't he usually succesful to a degree where he might as well print his own currency on gold plates?

It just gives the 'ultimatum' a bit of an empty ring.

Actually, this strikes me as the kind of thing a scooby-doo villain would say.
I can just picture it now...
KOJIMA: And I would've been able to stay in the industry, if it weren't for the shitty sales telling me to leave.

Note: I was of course translating from Kojima's bloated writing style, which I'm sure bleeds into the way he talks.

Anyway... after watching a few of the MGS cutscenes on youtube... I can't say that I would miss his writing.

A certain taboo in the game industry? Does that mean a game with no discernible violence? A game with an ugly female protagonist? A game with more than one play mechanic at work?

Oh the possibilities.

Alternately, "And I would have been able to stay in the industry, if it weren't for those shitty sales and that meddling duck thing!"

Actually, what is that duck thing he's riding in the publicity shots of him?

I'm pretty sure this is a marketing gimmick. And a pretty bratty one at that. He's basically saying "You guys all like the games I've made in the past. Either buy my next game and make sure I get enough money and recognition (regardless of whether the game is worth buying, and even the greatest names drop the occasional crap fest), or I won't make anymore ever again!"

He's using his past accomplishments and future potential to coerce people into buying his present game for reasons other than its own merits. Don't fall for it!

Of course it ends up being a good game, then everyone can be happy, I suppose.

What?

It is probably some random remark that we don't understand the whole context.

I've never owned a console that could play any Metal Gear Solid except for the last one, and that I didn't buy because I have no interest playing cutscenes separated by quick time events, no matter how good the execution might be.

So I don't have much of a personal investment in whether he stays or goes. If he brushes himself off after a failure and tries something a little different the next time, then great. If he decides to move on to something else, I wish him the best. If he wants to take it easy, I doubt he is going to starve.

Wow, Kojima is 46? I thought he was alot younger.
I'd hate to see him leave the industry, since his games were some of the first I have ever played. I sure as hell hopes his project works out well.
