CoD4 is great for LAN, even if you hate it online (like I do).
Company of Heroes is a win for RTS games. WW2 usually interests everyone, and the basebuilding is really simple in it.
CoD5 and Nazi Zombies is fun in the smaller hours.
UT3 and UT2K4 have been pretty popular within my LAN buddies. Not a great fan myself though.
AvP2 used to be creamworthy. Sadly enough the game is a bit outdated nowadays to actually get a real scare out of. Back in the days, every marine player in the room would burst to tears of fear, atleast once.

Make sure everyone's comfortable with piracy. There's no way in hell a room full of people are going to have all the different games bought, just out of coincidence.

Make sure to play the RTS games, and games you need to be focused in, early on. After 6am, everyone's going to be so damn tired, they won't have the energy to play starcraft, but suddenly Call of Juarez II seems like the greatest thing on earth. So bad it's good.

Beer/pot makes everything better, except intercourse, but since it's a school, I don't think you can have any of the former, and since it's a LAN party, I'm guessing you won't have any of the latter either. :)

All my LAN memories are pretty much inside jokes, you wouldn't get them, so I won't share them.

Hope you have a good time.
Thank you! Haha, talk about a LAN guide.

And AvP2 actually sounds like a good bit of fun, but being a new age gamer myself, I haven't really gotten to play it. Maybe we'll chez it out, if everyone is down, of course.

Make sure you know how to set up a whole LAN and make sure you have all the logistics (LAN cable, router, etc.), as a general rule of thumb, always have twice as much LAN cable as you need :p
A good game to play is Doom over deathmatch; it is very simple, challenging and breaks the ice in no time. You can get zDaemon which is a frontend for multiplayer Doom for Windows, it contains a shareware version of the Doom WAD, which still has multiplayer, so if a really anal teacher doesn't like piracy, just tell them it's shareware. Plus it's free, small and quick to copy and is massive fun!

I guarantee you're gonna love playing World in Conflict. It's pretty simple for a strategy game, yet it requires quite a bit of coordination and teamwork.

Our LANs general program:

Friday afternoon set-up, wait for other guys.
Order Pizza, watch a bad movie.
HL2DM, MW1, L4D, SupCom, WoW (some of us anyway), add copious amounts of alcohol and snacks.
4AM try to sleep.

Saturday
9AM start gaming again
Someone has to go shopping because we're running out of stuff (mostly beer probably)
7PM order chinese, watch another bad movie
More gaming, drinks and snacks.
4AM go to bed

Sunday
10AM start gaming some more
1PM first guys start breaking up their set-up
7PM order some more food (whatever we didn't order the first two days)
Watch one more movie, might even be a good one.
9PM head home
9:30PM go to bed dead tired

Monday
6AM have to get up to go to work, hate my life.

Sadly I've been deprived of the experience of LAN parties. But I would say, make sure there is sufficient unhealthy food and wet wipes, don't want sticky keyboards do you?

The greatest LAN game? L4D versus mode. The hilarity of people jumping and screaming as they're getting pinned or grabbed by zombies while no one else has noticed. I remember one LAN we have a Swedish friend who screams like a girl, so imagine when a Hunter pounces over a flaming barrel (thus catching fire) and lands on him.

Not just being jumped on suddenly by a zombie, but a FLAMING zombie. Oh the hilarity.

DotA (WC3 mod) is also good for LANs, but there is a new 100% free copy called League of Legends, I suggest you check that out. (its 5v5 max I think) http://www.lol-europe.com/

Pizza. Cheetos. 400 ft of Cat5 cable. 1 LAN Adapter w/AC. 4 Computers. 4-8 nerds. 20 total combined hours of your favorite LAN capable game. For me it was Ultima followed by Warcraft 3. We were the reds hunting blues and the orcs hunting humans. Good times. Have fun and good luck. :)

My brother's friend used to hold some bitchin' LAN parties at his place. Mostly Halo 2 and UT2004. We were all pretty experienced players so the games got to be really intense at times. Unfortunately it got to be a bit expensive for him, so he stopped holding them. *Sigh* Good times, good times...

I've been to a couple of LANs myself though it's mostly Counterstrike though recently we've been playing a lot of DOTA and C&C Generals. Seriously no body gives Generals credit especially the Zero Hour Reborn: The Last Stand mod. Carpet Bombing ftw especially when the bombs cover 1/5 of the map. Best one I've been to though is a Halo 3 one where we only did zombie where the zombies had no shields had 200% speed and were 400% damage resistance. Sandtrap was so awesome that way using the vehicles like mini convoys. The start was always a mad scramble to get to any vehicles before a zombie would smash your face in. Good times... Good times...

My school's computer club (of which I am the president) is having an overnight lock in/ lan party at the school in January. I'm pretty excited, as I've never been part of a LAN party before. We'll probably play alot of Counter Strike Source and Unreal Tournament 2004, seeing as they are cheap and easy to get set up in.

Anybody have any cool Lan party experiences to share? Or any tips on anything like what types of food items should be availabe? And, of course ideas for fun games would be welcome :]
I had to setup UT2004 for a LAN party for somekind of convention. It's nice, really.

I'm not sure if it's a LAN party if i play against my brothers. Unfortunatly, as much as I'd wish to, I only ever play against 2-3 people max in a LAN, no good LANparties around here.

We used to have LAN nights all the time back in the days, had up to 10 or so people cramped in the house. We used to play Shooters mainly because some of the gamers were against other genres.

It was very loud... but a lot of fun.

Ah the good old days.

For the past couple of years one of my freinds would host a LAN party at his house. There would be about six of us there playing stuff like TF2, Gears of War, Burnout and other similar stuff. We'd start at about 1pm and not finish until 2pm the next day and by the end of it most people would resort to playing Gmod.

This happens about twice a year and is awesome every time.
