Meaning, you weren't expecting to enjoy spending as much time as you've ended up doing so in one particular game?

I have just gone through the main stories of Silent Hill: Downpour and Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, by no means completely but did some side quests and updgrade hunting. Was glad to be done with them though for various design flaw reasons.

Now, I've gone back to Read Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare after a long haitus to finish off the storyline, and have found that I missed simply being in the plague-infested old west setting. I found War the apocalypse horse and it's simply pretty awesome cruising around saving towns, headshotting zombies, gathering some supplies and finding treasures before continuing on. They stripped down a lot of the more tedious aspects of the main game; not to say they were bad, but you feel more like a "world's gone to shit, but I'll go down swinging" badass vigilanti in this expansion.

It may actually end up being a while before I feel like returning to Dark Souls and Hitman now.

Dark Souls 1. Dark Souls 3 was coming out, so I figured I'd give 1 another shot, since I never got that far. 90+ hours later (spread across maybe a month) and I got all the achievements.

Also I suppose Civilization V. I had played it a bit awhile ago, but after going on a trip with my family, and playing a game with my brother on our laptops in a hotel room, I am now way back in. I apparently stopped playing when the new expansions were released, cause I had to relearn a lot, but I still play it every day since then, which was early April.

Overwatch. I played the demo just to try it out, because free demo.

I was not expecting to be spending every second of free time I had during that demo period playing, nor expecting to be pre-ordering the game.

stellaris sideswiped me pretty good, hadn't heard anything about it until like 2 weeks ago, saw it was made by same CKII and EUIV dev's, so I gave it a shot...

damn that is some fun, has a nice mass effect feel to it but in a strategy based game. Haven't beat a match yet since they take *forever*, but I've had fun building my empire.

Dragon Age 2 was the latest game. I was actually thinking about skipping it and just playing Inquisition after finishing Origins during my recent attempt to get through all the Dragon Age games. I am really glad I decided to at least try it out.

The combat was the most satisfying I've seen in an RPG, especially for a mage. It's one of the only ones where I've actively sought out combat situations and wanted fights to continue. And the Ancient Rock Wraith boss easily is one of my all-time favorite bosses now.

Beyond that, the characters were some of my favorites from BioWare, even those in the love-to-hate category like Fenris and Petrice. And that really helped make the story one of my favorites, given how small-scale and character-focused it all was. It did one of the best jobs of really giving the sense that you're just following the intertwined stories of a bunch of people in unusual situations that stretches for many years, and it managed to keep the stakes high without relying on a save-the-world plot. Some very well-done references to Origins certainly helped as well.

Overall, I know the game is generally seen as a horrible, lazy effort by BioWare, and I could definitely see where the rushed nature of the game came in. But for how great the combat, story, and characters were, I could easily overlook that, and I would say that the game is among my Top 5 now.

Stellaris. The only other Paradox game I tried is Crusader Kings II and I couldn't get into it as it seemed too daunting. I bought Stellaris because I had been wanting a "space" strategy game for a long while and the other recent contenders didn't do it for me.

I'm really loving the game so far. It feels much more accessible than CK2, which I guess may upset some long-time grand strategy fans, but Paradox certainly won me over with this one. Until last week my free time was mostly spent in Siege of Dragonspear but I've put it on the backburner now.

Fallen London. I was already a big fan of Sunless Sea, so I decided to check out where it had come from. I have to say, F2P games rarely hold my attention this long, Hearthstone was one of the few, and this one is really holding my attention. A story driven F2P game where I'm currently trying to earn a governorship over a colony of talking tigers.

Doom 4. I was really expecting it to be a mediocre Brutal Doom remake instead of a true Doom game, but apparently I was mistaken.

I need to upgrade my PC and wait for the game to come down in price before I can play it though.

For me it was Sleeping Dogs. I picked it up expecting a knock-off GTA clone, and what I got was an awesome Kung-Fu game with fun combat, an interesting story, and characters that I actually gave a damn about

It's amazing what good voice acting can do for my enjoyment of a game. This is the first game I've played in a while where the characters felt like real people and not just voice actors reading lines on a page

Joining the Stellaris crowd, which blew me off my feet only days after I got wild about Overwatch. Seems like I'll have two amazeballs games to get me through my exam period, with Doom waiting for me shortly after that.

One more for the Overwatch crowd right here. I've had my Collector's Edition pre-ordered for months.

After finally getting a chance to play it for myself during the Open Beta, I am ready to let that game consume my life.

Latest? Overwatch.

I was going to pass on the game. I had no interest in it. Then, with 2 days left to go, I tried the Beta. Holy crap I got hooked. ;_;

Ok, that does it, that's all I needed to hear. I WANT THIS FREAKING GAME...but I'm not sure my laptop can run it. It's a borderline example...

Planetbase. Space colony building simulator, where you broadly manage your colonist's actions based on priorities, but mostly they just do their own thing, under vague direction from you. You have to deal with threats, resource management, environmental hazards, and it's all to this fairly smooth, chillout kind of space music, that just makes the whole thing very addictive. I'll be playing, look at the clock, and think "I can keep playing until I've got this new dome built and established..." two hours later. "Just one more dome...I can almost be self sufficient on droid production...." two hours later "...shit, its almost dawn....I should sleep....after one more dome."

The Wii U in general... I just got Freedom Planet and Shantae and the Pirate's Curse on there on top of [still] playing Splatoon and Star Fox Zero... My Steam account's wondering when I'll finally "play" through The 39 Steps 100% like I said I would...

Other than that, I'm, once again, hooked on Humble Bundle... I don't care if it doesn't technically count, my backlog says otherwise...

Skyrim again. Lots of new mods to try since I last played.

I also played through Bastion again quite recently. It's every bit as amazing as I remember it being.

Same.

Huge fan of EU4, CK2, Victoria, and all of their stuff, but I was a bit tepid over this. I didn't know it was going to release so soon but I went against my better judgement and bought it day one anyway. Damn was that a good 40$ spent.

Used to be New Vegas, now it's 50% Battleborn and 50% Wolfenstein games (just finished The New Order, and going to start on The Old Blood in a bit). When I'm done with Wolfenstein it'll be replaced by Doom 4.
