In March 2011, in response to the creation of a school shooter mod entitled School Shooter: North American Tour 2012, developed by Checkerboarded Studios on Valve Corporation's Source engine, Thompson emailed Valve's managing director, Gabe Newell, demanding that the mod be removed, as he speculated that Valve played a part in the mod's development. In the letter, Thompson stated that Half-Life was directly responsible for the Erfurt massacre, as well as the Virginia Tech massacre and that Valve had until 5:00 PM on March 18 to remove the mod.
Anyone know what happened with this?
It got released and them removed from major mod sites because of all the controversy it was causing - not because of censorship, but because people were getting the wrong idea and thinking it was the mod site's fault.

So yeah, it just kind of fizzled out. You could probably find it if you really wanted to, though.
I was just curious if Jack got his way. The game sounds completely tasteless and I'd never play it but I think it has every right to exist.

Stupid voters keep voting for those people. You know, the people you see with signs that say "Keep the government out of my medicare." or a bumper sticker on their car that says "No Socialism!" when they're on the freeway.

They're only concerned with their rights. And they fail to understand that their rights will be on the table when these politicians are done killing everyone elses'.

I think most people are missing the point of this whole thing. There is nothing wrong with making the sale of certain video games to minors illegal, it's just that this law went about it in a manner that could have side effects of game censorship or interference with game development.
Sure there is. Laws that protect children from content categorized as exceptions to the First Amendment already exist. The trouble with these attempts to regulate game sales is that they're aimed not at the content but at the medium.

Look at it this way: porn, regardless of the medium, cannot legally be sold to minors. No books, no videos, no movies and of course no games. Yet guys like Yee want to legally restrict violent games not because of the content but because of the delivery method. You don't hear them howling for the same legislation against movies and books, do you?

This is why Jack Thompson years ago attempted (and failed miserably) to have violence categorized as pornography - if it was, violent games could be legally regulated. It's also why the most vocal opponents of regulation base their argument not on the content but on the medium. Why is it legal to sell Saw: The Movie to minors but not Saw: The Game?

The only thing I got out of his words was:

"That damn constitution sure is inconvenient, but we'll keep trying to work around it."
And waste millions of taxpayer dollars doing it.

We can only hope that the California legislature realizes there are better things to be spending its money on. If he's serious about continuing to pursue this agenda he deserves to have his career run into the ground.

Oh for the love of...

Face it Yee, you lost. No bones about it. I'm fairly certain the Supreme Court is not going to bother hearing your bullshit again for another decade or so, so why don't you calm the fuck down, and instead of pointing your finger at the industry, go on a campaign to tell parents to do their freaking jobs and monitor what their children do. Or would that make too much sense?

Seriously? He's already wasted millions of tax dollars that the State of California doesn't have on an unconstitutional law that isn't even necessary and he wants to do it again?

Well, maybe he'll cause enough of a fuss and get booted out like Jack Thompson did?

And I would love to see this 'crystal-clear evidence' he's going on about. Last I checked, the only definitive evidence was that violent games only have lasting effects on people who are severely mentally disturbed.

I've been playing violent games since I was 6 years old, because my parents spent a lot of time with me and felt confident that I could tell the difference between fiction and reality. Kids still can't buy M-rated games without parental consent. If parents do their Goddamn duty as parents then this becomes a complete non-issue.
We can only hope Doctor, we can only hope. BTW his "crystal-clear evidence" is the same "evidence" Mr. McCarthy had about Communists back in the mid-20th century.

I just want to add that Mr Yee once tried to pass a bill that forced all buildings to comply with Feng Shui. I'm not kidding this guy is the naniest of nanny state lawmakers.

Not American, but I believe that's the actual point of the Constitution, to ensure that the people are protected against overarching government attempts at curbing their freedom. Of course, some would say that the government has ignored parts of the Constitution anyway, go ask Ron Paul about the Tenth Amendment in the Bill of Rights...

the hidden dangers of your household- some are more obvious (flashes of cigarettes, drugs, pr0nz, a gay couple).. others, are much more insidious, and deeply affect your child's mind without you even knowing it. you may wonder, 'what could be so horrible?" look no further than your living room (flashes of scenes from GTA) call your senators today and tell them you won't have this dangerous threat near your children today
How many peoplw have gay couples hiding in their house? are they like gremlins?

OT:he has a really scary smile...
you'd be surprised >.>

nah i just figured if you were trying to scare the sheeple you would mention gay marriage or something

"The evidence is absolutely crystal clear that there are harmful effects on our children." - Leland Yee

"The Court has determined that there is no direct link between violent video games and its influence on children, in as much as compared to other types of media like television and pictures." - The Supreme Court

I agreed that there should be a stop for kids to get their little hands on higher rating games, but NOT with the industry(because they've done every thing they could to package their product so they are designed to be properly sell to the right age group.... except EA), but with the stupid parents, and stupid (minimum wages) game shop employees!

I'm not entirely certain what you just wrote, but I'm fairly certain that I disagree.

Um... let me put it in bullet...

* I think a kid (age of ... say... 9)... shouldn't play rated M game...
* I think under age gaming is not the game makers' fault...
* I think Gaming industries HAVE enough tags to inform the parents about the games they sell...
* I think it's the (ignorant)parents that led to underage gaming...
* I think it's the games shops' faults that underage gamers get taboo games...

there... I hope that help you clarify what I said... and YES I think a kid at age of 9 shouldn't play M-rated shooters... and we all CAN agreed to that... yes? (have you ever get powned by a kid hexor and had to hear him voice taunt in high pitch voice with insults to your mother (who is old enough to be his granny?) I have, and I wish the cops would jail that kid's mom, for being an ignorant mother to an ^*%$#@!@)*&%&$#%!$$$.... yeh...

Hey, California. Why don't you ... say ... fix your schools or something? Because that stuff is actually important.

Also, is Yee related to Shintaro Ishihara? They seem rather similar in insanity levels.
