Well he did say he would reduce the entire population of the world to him, Tim Schaffer (sp?) and perhaps a woman if she promised to wear a tim Schaffer mask.

OT: My book/game would be about finding an advanced civilzation living in a black hole and crippling them before they can destroy Earth.

Yahtzee is far too cynical for me
to ever listne to his advice,
Execpt on brutal legend he convinced me not to buy it.

OK, but we are not doing that, are we?

We are just taking a bit of it. It would help storylines.
I have yet to be convinced that Yahtzee has such insight into the writing process that taking his advice would be productive.

... Crossing mediums rarely works out, though game to books actually does work(Starcraft, Myst, Mass Effect, anyone?)

It's been done before, harry potter, the golden compass, lord of the rings, etc. And they were all shitty or just on par.

Yahtzee lacked a certain amount of, or great amoutn of sense saying that.

In fact, now I think he's just full of shit all the time now that i think about it. What a completely blubbering idiot. I think you must have taken it out of context hopefully.

Uh...no. I highly disagree with Yahtzee on the importance of stories in a video game. It's always a good thing to have, but look at video games from 20 years ago. Video game stories were never anything more then "A tyrant has taken over the world, you decide to stop him" or "You're girlfriend got punched in the face and taken hostage, rescue her."

When making a game, you should first decide on gameplay, THEN work on the story. Games can still be great if they have crappy stories, but no game is going to have a great story but crappy gameplay and still be good.

@CokeColaForTheWIn: Dude, it's not making your post more visible, we could see it just fine without caps. All it's doing is making your post look obnoxious and unappealing to read. I'm not trying to flame you or anything, I'm just pointing it out <_<

Fallout 3 kinda already did that. So did American McGee's Alice to an extent.
And that game kicked ass.

I'd prefer to go with Nahtzee's [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n7VAhzPcZ-s] approach, and focus more on the actual GAMEplay in the GAMEs. If you want a good story, open up a book. People have never needed an amazing backstory to enjoy poker, or football, why do you need one to play videoGAMES? Shouldn't they have solid enough GAMEplay to stand on their own irregardless of story?

True, but that is one of those games where a storyline wasn't even expected.

Hate to burst Yahtzee's bubble but most books are actually pretty mediocre or just plain bad. I mean yes, there are a lot of great books out there but only because it's a creative medium that's been around for a lot longer than video games. For every War and Peace, or Adventures of Tom Sawyer, there are hundreds of other books that were just sort average run of the mill entertainment. Making a book, and then making it into a game isn't some kind of ultimate formula. Most likely we'd just have a mediocre book and then a mediocre game to go with it.

Once and while you'll get a great book that's released that really makes an impact on literature. And once in a while you'll get a great game that really makes an impact on the industry. But it's all very hit or miss, like all forms of creative thought.
Very true, although thankfully as fictional books require imagination, they can usually be made better with a little creative thought.

That's just daft. It's like saying films shouldn't have stories because they are for seeing tits, explosions and special effects.

Poker is a form of gambling, why would it need a story, you play for money just as much as entertainment.

Football is sport, again, a back-story doesn't make any fucking sense.

At least use some real examples.

Y'know... I used to know Yahtzee before his stint at Zeropunctuation. He used to be a regular at the now defunct Home of The Underdogs forums (an Abandonware site). He really isn't that bitter (unless Rhubarb made him) as he's leading you to believe in his videos, it's a character.

Actually, I am a writer and I'm up for this. A novel is certainly a better form to base a game on than a film: it can be much more flexible whilst still retaining a single driving focus if necessary.

I'm also thinking of writing my thesis on the difference in the narrative needs of a novel, a film, and a computer game.

Unfortunately, I'm mainly writing realist fiction at the moment, and a game based on the lost (and fake) national identity of England wouldn't sell too well methinks.

EDIT: Damn, I've been essentially ninja'd by the previous post.

the thing is if you liked PC games in the 90s and then suffered through the last decade's repertoire, you'd probably agree with Yahtzee in most respects.

Yeah, but it would have been nice if the story and characters weren't shameful. I mean, a tiny bit more work on the writing and some better voice casting and maybe my ears wouldn't bleed every time a cutscene starts up.

God Hand is this kind of game done right with regards to the story. Once Clover knew their story was going to be stupid and not make sense, they went all out with it and had fun. Not to mention the voice acting in God Hand is both hilarious and excellent.

When I read the thread title, I got scared for a moment...

A game made from a book would be boring, and way to plot based.
BUT, I would LOVE a game made from The Hunger Games. If any of you read it, you probably thought it was horrible, but I loved it, and it could really shoot off from this. An original storyline, with original characters, and basically it's about you being in one of the Districts, living life, then you get chosen, get all gussied up, etc., etc., and then the real fun of the game kicks in when you get into the actual Hunger Games, and it turns into a survival of nature and surviving other competitors.
