Chapter 115: A Retelling of Ancient Dwarven History
__________________________________________________
Since the beginning of recorded history, Ngasma had been a scourge upon every civilization near the blighted lands of the Ocean of Shriveling. Seeking only to devour and consume, along with the occasional theft of pretty trinkets from nearby villages, Ngasma was feared by many. Yet the beast had never faced the wrath of a true army, and now it was tasked with bringing down not only an entire fortress but also the goblins camping outside of it.
A more cautious beast might have slinked away from such a formidable force, but Nagasm'a primitive mind didn't permit him to do more than gurgle in anger and lunge at the goblins. The goblins didn't even hesitate at the sight of the mighty kraken charging towards them. They were bored after months of waiting, eager to finally have a true fight on their hands.
Ngasma found itself overwhelmed by the small and nimble goblins, who scaled over his body, slowly hacking him apart like violent killer gnats. Flailing around his tentacles in frustration, Ngasma tried to resist. Slowly but surely blood drained from the great beast's veins and color began to fade from his eyes. To the dismay of the dwarven spectators, Ngasma was actually losing the fight.
The kraken fell onto the cracked earth in defeat, lacking the energy to continue lifting its now mangled tentacles. It briefly reflected on its life with as much thought as the kraken's small mind could muster. All it really consisted of was endless eating and theft. Now the feasts would come to the end on the edge of the ocean the kraken had dominated for so long. And then without ceremony, Ngasma's time was up.
Things weren't looking as good for the dwarves down in the abyss. Silent Thunder had made the same mistake as Jessica, attempting to retrieve a corpse to give it a proper burial. Now she had attracted the attention of a wanamingo queen, and with no one around to help...
Or so it seemed. Fortunately, Kevlar Eater was nearby and arrived just in time to draw the queen's attention away. Delivering a sweet flying kick straight to the queen's head, Silent Thunder managed to scramble away. These wanamingo's had lived for far too long, and now it was time for them to pay for the lives they had taken.
The queen was not alone though. Responding to her cries for aid, the wanamingo Scarrushes attacked Kevlar Eater. The wanamingo would sooner die than see a queen come to harm.
Kevlar Eater wouldn't have been able to take down both beasts at the same time, but his comrades soon arrived to support him. No longer capable of hunting down the dwarves one by one, the wanamingos found themselves outmatched.
The queen turned to flee, abandoning Scarrushes to his fate at the hands of the dwarves. However, the soldier Signpost was hot on her heels, leaving his wife Kyoufuu and Kevlar Eater to finish off Scarrushes.
The queen was fast, but Signpost managed to slow down her escape via repeated mace blows to the back of his head. But as he beat the foul beast down, Signpost found his thoughts drifting back to his wife. He regreted having left her to chase the queen and now worried for her safety. Sure she was a soldier as well, but she had never been as particularly good at combat as him...but she would be fine, right?
Evidently not. Kyoufuu had also attempted to chase down one of the fleeing queens after dealing with Scarrushes. However, this queen was bloody pissed.
Overwhelming Kyoufuu with incredible strength, the wanamingo queen began tearing apart Kyoufuu's right arm. Kyoufuu struggled in vain but the queen's grip was impossible to break alone. Her fellow soldier Archont had arrived on the scene but his aid came to late...
...too late to save her hand at least, which was torn off in the blink of an eye. The queen roared in triumph, unaware of the angry dwarf charging at her from behind.
Archont leapt onto the queen's back, jamming his spear deep into her body. After he managed to break her spine, the wanamingo queen was crippled in pain. It took a lot of stabbing and tearing, but eventually the queen fell to the ground. With her death, the wanamingo menace was finally at an end. All the remaining wanamingo's were either dead or gone, having fled into the depths of the abyss. However, they were not the only threat facing Reveredtour at the moment. There was still the forgotten beast Athrig to contend with.
But the Immortal Rags had finally arrived on the scene. Commander Root drove her spear clean through Arthrig's back, knocking the monstrous bird to the ground. It wasn't long before the rest of the squad had begun pummeling the incapacitated monster.
Similar to the goblin's triumph over Ngasma, the sheer number of dwarves beating on Arthrig rendered it incapable of fighting back effectively. Soon every inch of the bird's body was wracked with pain from countless cuts and bruises. Arthig was nothing compared to some of the other beasts the soldiers of Reveredtour had faced, and they brought an end to its wretched life with ease.
And then, much to the surprise of everyone who had become accustomed to the violence and carnage over the past few days, everything was calm. The wanamingos had been driven off, the forgotten beast slain, and the goblin's had slaughtered the once mighty kraken. Now the only task left was to clean up the mess...a rather daunting one, given the complete disarray the past 10 days had left the fortress in.

Okay, okay, I think everything is fine for now...god damn, what the fuck has been going on here? So much stuff happened at once I didn't even know what to do! There are at least 3 dead dwarves, and I think we're lucky to have that few. Things could have easily been A LOT worse. Whatever, that's in the past now. I need to figure out what to do now.
First problem I see is that while not many dwarves died, a lot of the soldiers are wounded. They need proper medical attention, and the only healer left is Silent Thunder!
So I reassigned a mason none as Smiles to be a healer. She doesn't have any medical background...but the thing is nobody else has any medical training either. But unlike others, her mother was a butcher. So Smiles sort of knows how to use a knife to cut meat properly. That is only vaguely related to surgery but it's more training than anyone else here has so she gets the job. I mean, a novice doctor is better than no doctor, right?

Already!?? The other siege hasn't even left yet and more goblins are already arriving. Don't they ever get tired of camping in front of our fort all year? It's not like I'm ever going to let them in!
That's...that's more than double the number of dwarves here. All of us could be trained soldiers and we still wouldn't be able to beat this siege. Gods help us if they ever figure out how to get past the drawbridge.

Silent Thunder gave me an update on the forts health. Fortunately the only dwarves that need medical attention are Gonzo20 and Kyoufuu. Unfortunately, their wounds are quite severe.
Gonzo's legs and hip have been mangled pretty badly. I'm not sure he will ever be able to walk again without the aid of crutch. Still, it's not the end of the world. I mean it's not like our military doesn't already accommodate people withy far worse injuries. He still has all his limbs attached, and we should be thankful for that.
Same can't be said of Kyoufuu. Her left hand is gone for good. Silent Thunder found it down in the abyss, but it's been torn up pretty bad. Also it had been lying in the mud for at least two days so now it has 6 different species of cavern parasites living inside it. So reattaching it is out of the question. We should probably burn it just to be safe since I think it's a health hazard.
In addition to the missing hand Kyoufuu also has a lost a huge amount of blood. She'll definitely need to stay in the hospital for quite some time before her body recovers. On the bright side it makes operating easy since patients that lose blood don't need to be knocked out when they're passing out on their own. Honestly I'm more worried about her husband Signpost.
He may not have any physical injuries but emotional ones can often be just as bad. He's worried sick about Kyoufuu, demanding that I give her the finest medical attention Reveredtour can provide when he isn't drowning his sorrows his alcohol. It's an easy request to fulfill when Silent Thunder is our best doctor. Technically I used to be the best one but I've already forgotten about most of that stuff. I tend to forget things easily when I'm not actively working on it, especially when I have to learn something else. Goden has been on my case to figure how to get pumps working here in Reveredtour. She says they could have many useful applications, and I can't really deny that. I just have no idea how to get the bloody things working properly!

Against all advice to do the opposite, Kyoufuu has decided to not rest in the hospital and instead resume active duty. I admire her dedication but she isn't in any state to start training again. Really I think she's just trying to get Signpost to stop worry about her, but that doesn't really work when you keep collapsing in the booze stockpile from blood lose! Even I'm getting worried at this point. Still she should be fine, I mean we do have
two one competent doctor on call...damn wanamingos.

So that turned out better than expected. I thought the military was going to fuck up and get even more dwarves killed. And there was a good chance the kraken might just bypass the goblins and go slaughter everyone in the fort, but instead it fought them and lost horribly! Ironically the presence of the siege may have saved Reveredtour. If the goblins weren't there the kraken would have just swam into the fort while every soldier was down in the abyss and gone on a rampage.
Also the update doesn't accurately reflect the current situation with Kyoufuu. Right now she is laying in the booze stockpile, spamming the log with announcements that she is too injured to pick up equipment. This has been going on for over a week. I'm just going to ignore it and hope it goes away.
Anyways, incredibly confusing events ingame combined with writing updates at 2 in the morning results in shitty updates. Hopefully things will be better next time.
