I think the silver battle axe was one of the weapons that was purchased. I don't even know if Op has any iron, or flux stone from the apparent lack of talking of smithing weapons.

I had an embark with no coal, no iron, just copper. There was a bit of gold waaay down in the second cavern but that was it.

I just completely gave up on that one...I can deal with no iron...but without an adequate tree supply(which I only had about 50 to start with) you can't smith worth a damn.

I bet most of the named dwarfs will die in short order just to spite us. And then the next lot who get named. It will become the dwarf black spot.

Just on a side note, is there an easy way to find caverns? Are they within a certain z range? Because I embarked to a desert and planned on going to the caverns for trees and water, but couldnt find them.

Why make a silver battle axe? Surely there are better materials available?
It was purchased from the dwarves probably. I haven't actually produced a single weapon beyond artifacts.

Actually I have tons of ores and marble for flux stone. The reason no smithing has taken place is because I'm an idiot and have neglected starting up the metal industry in favor of digging a moat.

Yeah I'm trying to get some made, but there are problems with this. The first one being that despite having all the materials needed for soap, the cooks won't make it. This is becuase you can't assign work orders through the workshop to make soap. You need to make a work order for soap through the jobs list and wait for the manager to validate the request, because Toady is insane and programs stuff in ridiculous ways sometimes. Goden would have to approve the work order as she is the manager, but the two forgotten beasts prevented that from occuring.

Easiest way is to make long, narrow exploration tunnels ever few z levels in an attempt to breach the caverns. It's hard to bypass them completley, but it is possible.

Being legendary doesn't make the work order get approved, so they're still useless.

The first time you make soap, you need to hit [j]-[m]-[q], type soap, and arrow key around until you are over make soap, then hit enter. Sometimes you can do things normally afterward.

You take fat to the soap maker workshop.
If only it were that simple. The following steps are required to produce soap;

1.) Butcher an animal to produce tallow
2.) Burn a log into ash at a wood furnace.
3.) Bring ash and a bucket to the ashery to produce a bucket of lye.
4.) Wait for the lye to moved into a barrel.
5.) Order that X units of soap be produced through the manager screen.
6.) Wait for the manager to approve the work order.
7.) Haul lye barrel and tallow to the soap maker's workshop.
8.) Congratulations. You now have soap and can enjoy the plethora of bug [http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Soap] associated with it.

Okay. This is odd. The game just said that I require 15.000 strands of Adamantine before I could make an Adamantine Wafer.

Does it really take that much? I've made several without any problems.

It's due to the suturing mechanics. Cloth and thread now come in multi-digit batches per item due to partial items being used for suturing.

Yeah, it's best just to ignore that. The number really isn't that big and is easily produced.

Exactly why I hadn't churned out any soap yet.

Also no update today as I felt half asleep for most of the day.
