Chapter 101: From the journal of Stinthad Kekimtobul

1st Moonstone, 1058, Early Winter

Well winter has arrived, along with an official degree making Reveredtour a county. The announcement isn't met with much celebration, as the goblins are still putting a damper on our spirits. I'm happy though. Now I have the title of Countess. It's even fancier than the old one!

4th Moonstone, 1058, Early Winter

A large force of goblins has gathered directly behind the walls protecting Bunker Hill. A troll architect appears to be examining the walls for structural weaknesses, presumably to find the ideal place to tear it down. I am not afraid of this. Dwavren architecture is sturdy and reliable, capable of withstanding the fists of bronze colossus! There is no way the goblins will be able to simply brute force their way past the walls. The workers know this as well, so they continue to operate on Bunker Hill without fear.

10th Moonstone, 1058, Early Winter

Silent Thunder met with the merchants today. Though her last attempt at trading went awry, I was confident she would do better this time. After all, these were not finicky elves but rather fellow dwarves. Though will not reject whatever goods we offer them

As usual they were genuinely eager to see the trinkets we had to offer them. Apparently Reveredtour stone crafts have become quite popular among nobility due to their abstract quality. In exchange for several bins of them, we purchased all the metal bars they had brought in addition to the typical food and booze. They seemed quite pleased with this exchange.

With trading complete, the me4rchants then expressed a great desire to leave the fort as soon as possible.

Understandable, but I doubt the goblins will have retreated by the time they are prepared to depart. I hope they don't resort to braving the caverns like the human law giver...

19th Moonstone, 1058, Early Winter

By the gods, why can't anything ever be simple?

I've been having the masons work on another project, but as shown by this picture they are having great difficulty. No less than 3 masons have managed to trap themselves, with no choice but to wait for other dwarves to come free them. How does this even manage to happen? It just seems like stunning incompetence but...well nobody can be this stupid. The masons must simply be drinking too much due to stress. Yes, that has to be it.

27th Moonstone, 1058, Early Winter

The mason situation continues to grow worse. Attempts to complete the construction and rescue the trapped masons in the process are being hampered by, as one might expect, the goblins.

A small goblin pack has decides to set up camp down on the beach near the fort. Though they appear to lack ranged weapons, this does not keep them from scaring the workers who fear they may produce them at any given moment.

Fortunately I have an idea of how to work around this. In the meantime, I'll see if Irridium is capable of shooting the goblin squad from the safety of the fort.

1st Opal, 1058, Mid-Winter

Irridium found that she could easily shoot the goblins from afar. She began firing bolts at the goblins, who evidently had not been anticipating any further resistance from us. Initially they paid no attention to Irridium, as she only shot the goblin's beak dog mounts. Caring little for the beasts of war, the goblins ignored their shrieks of pain.

It is only when Irridium began targeting the goblins themselves that they attempted to retreat. However, many of them remain on the beach for reasons I do not entirely understand. If I had to guess it would be because the goblin commander, who has not yet been shot, insists on holding position. I suspect her attitude will change should she feel the pain of iron bolts sticking out of her chest. Until then, Irridium will continue to fire upon them.

13th Opal, 1058, Mid-Winter

Despite Irridium killing one of the goblins with a well-aimed shot, some of them continue to stubbornly hold position on the beach. Unfortunately, Irridium has to gather more bolts before she can attack them again. To help her in this endeavor I have made a formal request to the forge masters to produce additional bolts. Any action that allows us to strike at the goblins must be given our full support.

In other news, one the haulers has begun exhibiting the symptoms associated with a strange mood.

What makes this particularly interesting is that the hauler in question, Trolldor, did not claim a simple crafting shop as one might expect from an unskilled laborer. Instead he has claimed control of the old Bowyer's workshop, which hasn't received any attention in years.

I'm quite curious as to what he plans to make here. Perhaps it is something Irridium can make use of?

16th Opal, 1058, Mid-Winter

Despite having to make due with low quality ammunition, Irridium is doing quite well in repelling the goblins. She has managed to wound several of them and their beak dog mounts, along with killing yet another goblin. Her skills with the crossbow truly are a sight to behold. In fact, I dare say she is one of the most skilled soldiers here!

No doubt she would be even more effective with a squad backing her up. Sadly we don't even have the materials to support one archer at the moment, let alone an entire division of them.

19th Opal, 1058, Mid-Winter

There are far fewer ranged goblin squads in this siege, so I have ordered the mechanics to operate the catapults close to the river. It was my hope that they would be able to aim these catapults better. It seems this prediction was accurate, as we have had our first successful hit.

A solid chunk of gabbro was flung across the river towards a group of goblin swordsmen camping at the entrance. A few managed to duck out of the way, causing one of the less-attentive soldiers in the back to be struck.

The blow was not fatal but quite powerful. Both the goblin and her mount were nearly knocked into the moat by the blow, in addition to having many of their bones shattered. Lacking ranged support, they could do nothing but shake their fist at us in anger. Finally we are getting a chance to inflict just revenge onto these goblins for all the pain they have caused us.

27th Opal, 1058, Mid-Winter

Trolldor has finished his artifact. As one would expect, it is a bow. This is the third artifact weapon to be produced here in Reveredtour.

It is quite impressive, and to let such a perfect weapon simply sit and gather dust would be a shame. Fortunately, we have an archer who is more than qualified to use this in battle.

4th Obsidian, 1058, Late Winter

Irridium has managed to drive off most of the goblins down on the beach. Now the masons can continue their work in peace. Still, this situation could easily occur again in the future. If those did happen to be goblin archers, it would be a lot worse to. So I've installed another path that will allow workers to access the kennels without using the lower road.

Hopefully the workers will remember to use this path when the lower path poses danger.

10th Obsidian, 1058, Late Winter

The mechanics continue to launch rocks at the goblins, however we have yet to receive another successful strike. The goblins are either dodging the rocks or the mechanics completely miss. Sometimes it seems rather absurd.

Still, so long as the goblins have no way of fighting back the mechanics will continue with the barrage. It's not like we have a shortage of ammo or anything like that. Besides, what better way to practice than on live targets?

In other news, the masons continue to suffer from stress in the workplace, resulting in careless mistakes such as this.

I'm sure someone will break down the wall and set her free at some point.

21st Obsidian, 1058, Late Winter

The land outside of Reveredtour is quiet. The goblin horde appears to have retreated back into the wastes. Last time they left it was a trick, and they simply came again in full force in just a few days. What's to say they won't do the same again?

Still...I can't keep Reveredtour locked up forever. I'll lower the bridge, but make sure that all activities outside are kept to a minimum for the time being.

27th Obsidian, 1058, Late Winter

Oh fuck you, this is just stupid.

I'm sure there's some perfectly reasonable explanation for this. Nobody can be this dumb, it just isn't possible.

Right?

I had a bunch of interference at home keeping me from working much this week. To make up for it, here's an entire month in one update. Worth noting that Irridium is the first soldier in Reveredtour to reach the second tier of soldier. There are normal soldiers, and then there elite ones recognized for their incredible skill. All this really affects is the dwarf's tile, which is swapped for another one.

Also masons are still fucking stupid.

Maybe all the other masons also have terrible spouses and need a break. Being trapped is very peaceful.

out of curiosity how do you dig upwards? ive never been able to figure it out
As far as I am aware you can not. Digging can only take place on the z-level the miner is currently on. However, there are two ways to affect the z level directly above and below you. You can choose to channel an area, which replaces the floor or wall tile with a downward ramp and also carves out the area below the ramp. You can also choose to dig an upwards ramp. This can only be done on a wall tile. The wall will be replace with an up ramp and the area above the ramp will be carved out. It is effectively the revere of channeling.

Protip: You can avoid masons trapping themselves by designating and suspending a wall on the tiles you don't want them to stand on.

sniping is for cowards.
Apparently so is being effective.
If your workmen could actually prioritise weapons over stuffing baskets full of wooden goods, we might not need to rely on elven weapons.
If your soldiers could avoid running directly onto the goblin spears we might not need to keep replacing lost gear.

Dwarf Fortress was recently featured in a New York Times article.. Since all the Dwarf Fortress fans are going to be here anyway, I figured the news wouldn't need its own thread, but still, cool stuff.

Yay for DF, more players mean more donations and more donations means more shit for Toady to kill us with.
