Apparently so is being effective.
If your workmen could actually prioritise weapons over stuffing baskets full of wooden goods, we might not need to rely on elven weapons.
If your soldiers could avoid running directly onto the goblin spears we might not need to keep replacing lost gear.
(You can see why they got married at first.... ;) )

Chapter 102: From the journal of Stinthad Kekimtobul

And so another year has ended and we enter a new one. I like to think that we are starting this year off on a good foot. The goblin horde has just retreated, the caverns are under control, work is proceeding smoothly, and every dwarf is fairly healthy and happy. Yes, things are good here in Reveredtour at the moment.

Unfortunately not everything good start off well. Our breeding program has run into a problem I didn't really consider until now.

Some of our animals are beginning to succumb to old age. Our caretakers have done their best to keep them healthy, but there is only so much you can do before time takes it tool. Hopefully this won't be a big problem and we can get some replacements soon.

7th Granite, 1059, Early Spring

It seems we have yet another visitor from the crypt. Our previous encounters with giant cave spiders haven't exactly been favorable, to say the least. Though one continues to serve as a loyal beast of war, there is still a large amount of distrust surrounding these giant creatures. The death of RandomID certainly did not help to improve the public's opinion of them. Still, I believe we can still make use of these misunderstood creatures. Hopefully the spider will stumble into a cage trap so we can properly tame it. Then we could perhaps raise a spider army! And no doubt they would produce tons of lovely cave spider silk. Oh how I do love that silk. Which reminds me...

11th Granite, 1059, Early Spring

Wow! Apparently there's another giant cave spider down in the caverns! It's super rare for two of them show up at once! We sure are lucky. Or at least we're lucky if the cave spiders end up in the traps instead of going on a rampage.

...odd. The new one seems pretty big, even for a giant cave spider. Certainly doesn't look like one I've ever seen. Whatever, I'm sure it won't be a problem.

19th Granite, 1059, Early Spring

Okay, it seems I have made a mistake. Upon closer inspection this new creature is NOT a giant cave spider. Rather, it is one of those horrible abominations from the beginning of time that seek to destroy everything. Living up to its terrible reputation, this foul beast has decided to...swim in the lake.

Yeah I don't get this. For some reason these forgotten beasts all seem to love hanging out in the lake near the farms. It annoys the farmers to no end but other than that they aren't actually doing anything harmful. Perhaps these forgotten beasts are not so terrible after all. Well, so long as they stay at the bottom of the lake I don't have any problem with them. It's not like I can do anything about it.

27th Granite, 1059, Early Spring

There have been many parties recently, as morale is very high right now. Some overseers might object to this constant revelry by I have no issue with it. What kind of cruel leader would force their subjects to constantly work and break up any attempts at celebration as soon as they showed up? Well, I certainly am not that kind of leader.

7th Slate, 1059, Mid-Spring

Lately I've been thinking about the elves and how we treated them last year. I'm wondering how they're going to respond to that. I'm hoping they'll just let bygones be bygones and trade with us as normal. They've been awfully forgiving of our past actions, but you can only push someone so far before they retaliate.

Root says that even if the elves did seek revenge through violence that our military is "more than capable of handling a few angry knife-ears". I'm not sure if that's her hubris or bigotry talking.

11th Slate, 1059, Mid-Spring

Root surprised me today. Upon returning from a patrol of the caverns I noticed there was an infant clinging to her chest. Apparently, this is actually her own child! I didn't know she was pregnant...normally woman bearing child do not serve in the military. Then again this is Root we're talking about so her continued service doesn't surprise me.

The young girl is named Vallshan, a name derived from one of Reveredtour's fallen soldiers. I have to admit I am somewhat concerned about the child's safety. Root insists on carrying the child with her at all times. A warzone is no place for an infant. I suggested she let Aidinthel take care of the child, but she simply laughed and went back to training.

15th Slate, 1059, Mid-Spring

I think poor Shiec99 might be suffering from some sort of mental disability. What other explanation is there for her repeatedly managing to trap herself when performing simple jobs.

19th Slate, 1059, Mid-Spring

Oh dear, not this again. One of the cooks, Coleus Rattus I believe, has gone insane. Well, I guess that's not putting it the right way. She isn't insane; she's just being controlled by some mysterious force that makes her act completely insane. That's different!

She has taken control of the clothier's shop. I suppose I should be thankful she didn't drag some poor dwarf into the butcher's shop, but I can't help but be bothered by this. Her presence in the clothier's shop directly interferes with my mandate to produce a new pair of gloves!

Oh well, I suppose that can wait. Oh! Maybe Coleus is going to make a really fancy set of gloves! That'd be great!

25th Slate, 1059, Mid-Spring

It seems we're having a bit of trouble with Coleus. She has locked herself inside the clothier's shop, but does not appear to be working on anything. Instead she shouts various gibberish at anyone who wanders nearby. If I had to guess, she is demanding some specific material to work with. I can't imagine what Reveredtour could possibly be lacking at this point, but I'll check our stockpiles to see if we lack whatever it is she demands.

Is no one else concerned about what clothes the possessed dwarf is going to make out of bones?

Clearly they are going the original route and adding tons and tons of spikes to whatever it is.

I also expect mini-Root to be charging into battle with an axe within the next two months.

I expect mini-Root to die within a month, killed by some creature root will be fighting. In dwarf fortress, babies are shields.

I find it unsurprising that Root's baby needs alcohol to get through the day. Poor child must be scared senseless, going out on patrols all day.

Not sure if I'm happy about Irridium using these bows though, sniping is for cowards.
Anything that puts distance between me and elves is a good thing. You burn down ONE lousy forest, and all of a sudden you're the "scourge of all elven kind". Drama-queens...

Knowing Root, she'd start using her kid as a weapon if she shows any sign of fear. Not that any child of hers will be fearful, I mean we're talking about Root here. She has probably already decked her out in a platemail romper and a spiked pacifier.

Also, I vote for letting Cowabungaa Jr. and Vallorn Jr. to grow up together under Root's tutelage. They shall make a fine set of heirs to Roots military leadership.

Unfortunately it's not a question of what she will make, but rather if she will actually manage to make it. I may have discussed this earlier, but sometimes problems occur when updating to new versions with old saves. One of these problems can be related to artifacts demanding items you can't actually produce in the old versions. I hope that's not happening here, but it seems like the most likely explanation. We have pretty much everything a mood could need.
