Bins are still incredibly useful and helpful. You still have to make sure not to give them the bins, but it speeds up trading considerably. It's easier to carry one bin than 20 individual trinkets.

How does one offer the contents of the bin but not the container itself? I found the trading interface to be rather confusing.

In order to offer the items within bins, but not the bin itself, all you have to do is scroll down and mark the items for trade individually.

If you DO offer up a bin, I believe it trades both the bin and the stuff inside it. So trading bins full of crap can save time on the trade menu, so long as you aren't trading with elves and manage to piss them off.

Of course. I just forgot that you can't offer the bins themselves, otherwise the elves get pissed off.

It's annoying trading bins though, because my stupid dwarves like to stick my rope in the same bin as my stone doodads. Even when I specifically tell them not to.

That, and you also lose a tree when you trade a bin.

26th Felsite, 1053, Late Spring

I've decide to start a project that will go on for years and span across multiple areas of Reveredtour; Operation Make Reveredtour Look Pretty!

Building everything out of shiny microline just isn't enough sometimes. We need to spruce this place up. Everyone will be happier as a result, especially me! I decided we would start with the Crypt, as it's quite a dull place with little charm to it. This was resolved simply by throwing some statues onto the bridge that crosses the lake.

1st Hematite, 1053, Early Summer



Well the number of complaints I've received over the heat has risen, which must mean its summer again. I like summer here. Sure, it's really hot, but it's far from unbearable. I mean, it's not like the ocean is boiling or scorching hot rain is melting our flesh off. Anyways, I managed to finish treating Atiskovest for his wounds right before summer came around, so he was free to leave the hospital. Unfortunately, this didn't go as well as I had hoped.

Stinthad: "Alright Atiskovest, your hand is repaired and you're free to leave again. Have a wonderful summer!"
Atiskovest: "What?!? What do you mean my hand is repaired!?! I can't even feel it right now!"



Stinthad: "Yeah, well sometimes I can't fix every injury..."
Atiskovest: "Fix?!? It wasn't this bad when I came in here! You made it worse!"
Stinthad: "Look, it's not my fault! I swear someone tricked me into reading the wrong text book again!"
Atiskovest: "You *****!"

And with that he stormed out of the hospital. It really wasn't my fault though!

7th Hematite, 1053, Early Summer



Huh. You know, I don't want to be a jerk, but I'm beginning to think the dwarves might be partying to much. Just a bit I mean. Parties are nice but we kind of have important work to get done.

Like building a graveyard. Apparently none of the dwarves have any qualms about dancing next to a pile of bleached skeletons.

8th Hematite, 1053, Early Summer



Why must so many days begin with a loud crash? Well, apparently there was some kind of accident near the entrance which resulted in a dwarf plummeting into the empty moat. I saw her stumbling around the moat in a daze, clearly confused due to the accident.



Stinthad: "Hey! Are you okay?!?"
Amostocig: "Oh yes, I'm fine. Just fine..."



Stinthad: "Oh dear, you really don't look fine. At all. I think you should come to the hospital!"
Amostocig: "Actually, this dirt looks really comfortable. I'm just going to lie down here for a moment..."

And then she collapsed onto the ground. Looks like I have another patient.

13th Hematite, 1053, Early Summer

I went to feed the crazy mason some food today. She snatched the plump helmet out of my hands, claimed how she would use it to bring about our doom, and then tried to break out of her cage. Using the plump helmet. Needless to say, this did not work. However, while I saw watching her futile attempts at escape, I heard a loud croaking noise coming from the corner.



Apparently, we caught a giant toad.

Kraken's notes: When they're not programming absurd computer games, giant toads can be found down in the caverns. Usually they will make their presence known by chasing around some terrified workers. Being 5 times bigger than a dwarf, giant toads are easily capable of crushing said workers. They can even give military dwarves some trouble, though a trained squad should still make short work of them.

Giant toads have a respectable pet value, and when butchered yield body parts worth 4 times that of the average animal. Due to their size, they can also serve as decent war beasts. All this means that giant toads are excellent animals to breed. Though your biggest challenge will be, as with most rare cavern dwellers, catching a breeding pair.

Why does nobody tell me about these things? We've got this cute toad just sitting down here in a cage, when it could be leaping about on the surface spreading joy and wonder.



19th Heamite, 1053, Early Summer

Reveredtour now has a large population. We've produced a great amount of wealth, and grown substantially over these 3 long years. No longer can it simply be considered a mere outpost, and the dwarves living here want the fortress to reflect this. So I was overthrown from my position of expedition leader, and it was decided that from now on the leader would be decided through elections.

Of course, the results of the first election were pretty obvious.



So little has actually changed. But then again this was to be expected. I'm doing a pretty good job. Oddly enough the few people who didn't vote for me mainly consisted of people who had been in the hospital at one point or another. I think there's a lesson there, but I can't quite figure it out.

20th Hematite, 1053, Early Summer

One of the haulers stopped working today. He just dropped the amphibian man skeleton he was carrying right on the floor, started staring vacantly at the ground for a few seconds, then proclaimed that he had an incredible idea.



He refused to tell anyone about it thought. Instead he ran off towards the kitchen and locked himself inside the clothier's shop.



Looks like another one of those strange moods. Hopefully this one will turn out better than the last one. I'd hate to have another insane dwarf living here. He won't tell anyone what he's making, but it has to be a piece of clothing. Oh I hope it's a cute glove!

23rd Hematite, 1053, Early Summer



More migrants? Well, why not. We could always use more masons and soldiers. And we have plenty of delicious food to go around.



27th Hematite, 1053, Early Summer

So I finally finished diagnosing all of Amostocig's injuries today. What a mess she is!



It's going to take a lot of time to fix all these wounds. Initially I was worried since I didn't think I would have any cloth to use to fix her wounds, but apparently Momuz "liberated" a large amount of cloth from the elves as they stormed out of Reveredtour. I'd complain about his theft, but it's hard to when the elves were involved.

28th Hematite, 1053, Early Summer



It seems that hauler has finally gathered enough materials to start working. I don't know how he could be using so many things to make one piece of clothing. Maybe it's a really fancy shirt? Well, at least we won't have another crazy dwarf on our hands. Speaking of which...



That crazy mason kicked the bucket. Nobody really cares though.

1st Malachite, 1053, Mid-Summer

Goden demanded to talk to me today. At first I thought she wanted to have a pleasant discussion over some strawberry wine. Instead, she yelled at me about various aspects of the fort she's been dissatisfied with. I suppose I should have expected that.



She didn't need to be such a jerk about it though! Though I guess that is also to be expected.

4th Malachite, 1053, Mid-Summer

Well that hauler finished his project today. He called me over to behold the majesty of the artifact he had spent weeks laboring to produce. I expected some amazing piece of clothing, and was greeted with the sight of...



A rope.



A rope with spikes on it and the picture of some random dwarf. So not only is the rope ugly, but it's also completely impractical due to being covered in the aforementioned spikes. I'm somewhat disappointed in this. Goden says that it's seemingly random nature is a result of the "gods sense of humor". I don't see what's so funny about a rope you can't even hold without cutting yourself.

Actually, it's pretty useful. You can build a restraint in a room with it to make a tiny box with a bed in it into suitable quarters for a mayor.

Maybe make some kind of spiky noose trap? Hahah, you have such luck with artifacts. Oh, and exciting news, my first real fight!

My axedwarf destroyed a zombie mountain goat, yay!

Step two, set the Dwarven Atom Smasher on the inevitable goblin siege!

On a different note, how on earth does one get past an aquifier? I have tried a few things, and I am not quite sure how.

Eh, you don't really need plaster. Splints have served me fine, not a death to infection yet unless you count the ~20 cases of bleeding gas inhalation and everyone without nerve damage made a full recovery from all types of normal stabbing.

Yeah I'm not using plaster either, so I can't help you there.

I get past aquifers by removing them from the game through basic modding. I do not find them fun to deal with, they take way to long to get past, and overall I feel like I enjoy the game more without them.

There are a few tricks to getting through them. The easiest one is to find a chunk of non-aquifer ore in the aquifer and dig down through it. If you've got a one-layer aquifer, you can also punch through it by channeling out a large section then dropping a huge block of rock onto it, then digging through that. In the unlikely event that you have any BEFORE the aquifer, you can dump magma into it. The only remaining option is increasingly elaborate pump arrangements and smoothing the walls or building new ones while the pumps keep the area dry.

Oh, and the obsidian around a volcano isn't part of any aquifer, so you can dig down through that.

See I pretty much embark exclusively on ocean maps, which always have multiple layer aquifers. And since I like building my forts above ground out of stone, having to deal with multiple aquifers is a nightmare.

I think I might need to relocate the well to a different area.



It seems that a large number of dwarves are using it to wash all the grime off their clothes and bodies, which wouldn't be a problem if said grime didn't then splatter across the ground. Everyone heading to the production center has to cross through a vile pool of blood and mud. It's not exactly pleasant, to say the least.

9th Malachite, 1053, Mid-Summer

I've been bothered by something recently. I felt like Reveredtour was missing something, but I couldn't figure out what it was. Today I finally realized what I have desired all along.



Stinthad: "Rovod! Come over here! I need to tell you something!"
Rovod: "Uh, okay. What exactly do want?"
Stinthad: "I feel like Reveredtour is missing something. Something that you can provide it with."
Rovod: "And what might that be?"
Stinthad: "Bucklers!"



Rovod: "Bucklers?"
Stinthad: "Yes, bucklers."
Rovod: "...why do you want those?"
Stinthad: "I don't know."
Rovod: "..."
Stinthad: "You can make them though, right?"
Rovod: "Yeah, sure."



Stinthad: "Excellent! Also, if you don't mind me asking, what are you making for dinner tonight?"
Rovod: "Roasted cow spleen with a side of mussel."



That sounds delightful!

14th Malachite, 1053, Mid-Summer



The diggers have almost finished with the moat, which means it will soon be time to flood it. All the floodgates are properly linked up, so all that remains is to dig out the last few tiles separating the river from the empty moat.

16th Malachite, 1053, Mid-Summer

Well the diggers removed the last pieces of land separating the moat and the river. A torrent of water is now rushing up against the floodgates. This is exactly what I wanted, but what I didn't want is a river of blood!



How is everyone in this fort so filthy that the second they touch water it becomes tainted with the blood of dozens of foul beasts?



Well I suppose it ultimately doesn't matter. PULL THE LEVER!!!

18th Malachite, 1053, Mid-Summer

I was very happy to hear that Rovod and her cooks finished making the bucklers I wanted.



But this made me realize something. Reveredtour needs even MORE bucklers!



I DEMAND THEY BE MADE NOW!!!

22nd Malachite, 1053, Mid-Summer



Goden was once again proclaiming her greatness, as she made an engraving she was particularly proud of. I came to look at the engraving, fully expecting it to be another image of her ascending to some position of power.



Instead, it was some nightmare creature that according to legend lives in the wilderness surrounding Reveredtour. Isn't that lovely?

Well the moat is starting to fill up, albeit at a much slower rate than I expected. I guess I overestimated the amount of water flowing through the river. Maybe it would have been better to just use the ocean as the main water source. Oh well, too late to change it now.

Also the cooks finished making the new bucklers I demanded. I feel that Reveredtour has enough of them for now.

1st Galena, 1053, Late Summer



I had a new well-constructed down in the refuse stockpile, figuring that it wouldn't matter if the bones and skulls lying down there got covered in blood. I had that dumb rope that hauler made used to create the well. Since it's operated by crank the only person who had to actually touch the rope was the one who installed it, so it shouldn't be a problem.

Speaking of which, one of the mechanics now needs to be treated for several cuts on their hands. I suppose this was to be expected.

Nah, just fluff. The possible harm once could take from handling an object covered in spikes isn't accounted for by Dwarf Fortress. At least, not at the moment.
