Interesting.
Why have you divided your military up so much? Why not fill out the gaps in an existing squad, before creating a new one? This seem to create excessive micromanagement.
Each squad can only contain 10 dwarves. Prior to the last battle, the first squad was completley full. Therefore, all thew new recruits were put into their own squad. The other two squads are "special" ones that don't function like a normal squad. One of them is the fortress guard, which is led by Goden and pretty much doesn't do anything. Some people actually use the fortress guard but I just keep them around as a formality. The second squad is a ranged one, and therefor needs its own special recruits.

Ah, ok. I didn't realise the first squad was initially full, my bad.

Chapter 86: From the journal of Stinthad Kekimtobul

__________________________________________________

26th Felsite, 1057, Late Spring

It seems at some point during the fight with the goblins that artifact was completed. It's a bed, and a rather nice one to. Aside from the name I mean. I'm not sure what the bed has to do with a killer. I guess most artifacts have a minimum creepiness quota to meet.

I was a bit worried about this bed being proudly displayed with the elves here, but it seems they've run off. The merchants apparently thought we wouldn't be able to handle the goblins and decided to leave. The elf we saved from the goblins also left, despite the dangers the wastes pose to a lone traveler. It's probably because upon rescuing her, Root spat on her face and called her worthless. She really needs to stop being so rude.

1st Hematite, 1057, Early Summer

Summer has finally arrived, and fortunately it has not brought further goblin aggression with it. Perhaps these thieves and the ambush consist of all the military might they could justify sending over to Reveredtour this month. I hope so, otherwise I'll probably have even more patients to treat. Speaking of which, Silent Thunder has finished moving most of the injured soldiers into the hospital so we can begin treating them now.

First we have Chaza, one of the new recruits. She received a rather nasty blow to her right leg, however I don't think it will cause any permanent damage. Assuming I don't mess up her treatment she should be back to normal in due time.

Then there's Da-Moa, another new soldier. She only has cuts on her right foot, but I don't want her being exposed to an infection. Some cleaning of the wound should be enough.

Lastly, we have Chaotic Kraus, and unfortunately his wounds are far more severe. He's going to need extensive treatment and a lengthy amount of time to rest in order to recover properly. Even then, I'm not sure his right foot is ever going to heal completely. He may need to use crutches, something I'm sure no soldier wants to hear. It can't be avoided though. Why do goblins seem to excel at cutting up our soldiers feet? It's where most of the injuries seem to be located.

4th Hematite, 1057, Early Summer

I was looking over the stocks, when I noticed something rather distressing; we're running out of food!

Well, mainly we're running out of booze. However, our food stores are slowly being depleted. I believe this is a result of our forts population greatly increasing while the number of cooks has...decreased, due to the unfortunate accidents. The solution to this is obvious of course; reassign a bunch of useless haulers to be cooks! Granted barely any of them know anything about preparing food, but it's not like they have high standards to meet.

8th Hematite, 1057, Early Summer

It seems that a giant cave swallow zombie has taken up residence across the lake down in the crypt. It's endless squawking is driving the farmers away, and as a result it needs to be eliminated. The Immortal Rags could no doubt handle this without a problem, but I think this is a perfect opportunity to the Slivers of Heat more experience! This time without one of them dying, of course.

15th Hematite, 1057, Early Summer

Just as I had expected, the new recruits worked together to kill the giant cave swallow with ease. They are proving to be quite effective. For a bunch of novices I mean. I still wouldn't trust them to take out one of those giant abominations on their own, but perhaps they can support the Immortal Rags should such a situation ever arise again.

Other than that cave swallow things have been pretty calm here when it comes to military activity. We haven't even been invaded by the usual swarms of trogs and crundles. Despite this, Goden has taken a break from her engraving and asked that she be provided a room in which to hone her combat skills. Not sure why she's become interested in fighting. Her role as captain of the guard is more a formality than anything else.

20th Hematite, 1057, Early Summer

So for the past few weeks me and Silent Thunder have been fixing up the wounded soldiers. Two of them have already fully recovered, which is great, but Chaotic Kraus isn't making much progress. Despite repeated treatment his condition has yet to improve.

Perhaps we're doing something wrong? No, that can't be the case. If we were, surely Chaotic Kraus would be screaming in pain by now. Granted he can't do so because he's been unconscious for the majority of his time in the hospital. Because we're running low on booze I found an alternative method of inducing sleep in patients; repeated head trauma applied by an earth golem. It works great! Granted there might be some slight side effect but...well I'm sure he'll be fine.

25th Hematite, 1057, Early Summer

Wow, things just keep getting better and better lately! There's already a new group of settlers heading towards Reveredtour! Perhaps news of our small victory over the goblins has already been spread around the capital.

Even the children are celebrating the arrival of more dwarves! Things really have improved around here. Now to see what these new migrants can contribute to Reveredtour...

Irridium told me that was the proper way to greet an elf.

I'm just glad the new bed doesn't have spikes.

I always wonder why you don't just order your military to kill the surviving elf and human traders after the first one is killed. You would get all the trader's stuff and at least two butcher-able animal corpses.

So do I have skills yet? Or am I still a glorified nurse?
Your skills are actually shown in the latest update. Everything useful is still "dabbling".

Any time a friendly species, for whatever reason, the civilization that species belongs to gets mad. Eventually if you let to many merchants die they will turn hostile. So to attack the survivors of a goblin attack would only piss them off more. It doesn't matter if the goblins attacked them first. All they focus on is that a merchant died in your territory and therefore it is always your fault.

Yeah, and despite the fact that they're pansy tree-huggers, they are the only species that will sell you exotic creatures.

If I could possibly be added to the list of "names to be dwarf-ed", I'd appreciate it.

Name: To Be Decided

No, that's not a placeholder. The name is "To Be Decided".

"So, what'd you name your baby?"
"To Be Decided."
"You mean you haven't had a chance to pick a name yet?"
"No, the baby's name is To Be Decided."
"Don't feel bad, I'm sure a lot of first-time parents are in the same boat."
"We *did* pick a name."
"Oh? I thought you said your child's name was To Be Decided"
"That is correct."
"What's correct?"
"Yes."

But many times, the goblins have already killed one merchant, so my question is why do you let the other escape when they're already going to hate you for the failure of the caravan anyway? I haven't noticed any increased hatred from me slaughtering both traders, to letting one get away in my forts.

I think even Commander Root would balk at killing and looting survivors.

Yes. How can they savor being glowered at if they're deceased `-`?

I believe that they get more angry as more merchants die. Still, even if that is not the case I wouldn't kill them. I'd have a hard time justifying it from a narrative perspective, and the they bring are not so desperately needed that I'd even bother attacking them anyways.
