I hate double standards i mean the goverment executes people all the time,
yet i go on one little killing spree and i get called a mass murderer.

on a serious note Sexuality, Drug laws and religion has ludacris amounts of double standards sometime

and dont forget politics, i would be willing to bet that everything in politics is a double standard in one way or another

Yeah this sort of thing.

This springs to mind:

And there are an absolute ton of double standards in the boss/employee dynamic.
That comic is absolute gold.

I'm Han Solo is the most hilariously bad thing that has come into existence in a long while. Same goes for that entire dancing segment of the game really, it's horrifying at first but you watch it long enough and you can't stop laughing at it!

Wonder how inflammatory this topic is around here but I've seen creationists arguing along the lines of "Well you can't prove that Evolution is what created us so therefore you're wrong and we're right!"

I was not offended by the dance segments of the game. You are right, it's funny shit.

As for the other one, my question would be, "Without using the Bible, can you prove Magic sky daddy dood it?" That usually stops the discussion.

Aetheists who get pissy at those who rub their religion in their face, and then rant about how science is the true way forward and everything religion says is wrong... Theres actually an interesting debate into whether science should be considered a religion, after all, how many people believe what scientists say with question? They may have "proof" but then, priests also have their own versions of proof that gods exist. Just saying.

p.s it should be noted I am a firm believer in the falsification theory. I.e. something is true until it is proven false. If it is proven completely false once, then it is false, regardless of how often it has been correct in the past. Hence why I believe the supernatural could potentially exist.

The problem with that is that absolutely anyone can test a scientific theory, as long as they have the proper equipment. With a lot of the most modern advances in science, that's a bit prohibitive to the common person I'll admit, but experiments that we do in 3rd grade science class in the modern day would have been considered magic to the people of a few centuries ago.

Any scientific theory that is taken seriously by the scientific community at large has extensive documentation behind it. Scientific or mathematical theories, closely observed and recorded experiments, repeats of said experiments conducted by third parties. A lot of the language used in the official documentation is beyond what the average person might know but they're publicly out there and anyone can test the theories themselves theoretically.

Whereas only the highest up of higher ups in the church are the ones who are allowed to communicate with this almighty sky god who supposedly controls everything, no ordinary person would be able to do so.

It's also important to note that scientists tend to call things theories for a reason. If something cannot be conclusively proven through observable experiments, it's only a theory and not considered fact. Evolution is a theory as it's impossible to say with absolute certainty that it's what caused humans to exist. Gravity is a theory because while we are able to observe and measure its effects, we have no idea what causes it. On the other hand religious people are extremely quick to claim that everything their sky god says is 100% absolute fact.

problem is that to people like that, telling them they can't use the bible as their source is like saying I'm not allowed to use my eyes to identify what color something is. They honestly and earnestly believe that "the bible says so." is legitimate support for the theory of Creationism.

In regards to the Creationism vs. Evolution, creationists only have word of god to go by, while Scientists can demonstrate the process of natural selection (the process by which Evolution would occur) using fossil records and experiments with bacteria.

Scientists can prove natural selection, they just can't prove the theory of Evolution, that natural selection is what caused us. Just in the same way that scientists can prove that things will fall towards earth, and measure the effect of this mysterious pull, but have no explanation for what causes it.

That whole gaming community thing of being massively hostile to anyone who isn't male and then wondering why more women don't play games (and insisiting the ones who do get `special treatment`, which is bullcrap).

But yeah. Double standards suck but they're tricky to get rid of.

Um... Going off the original example and my vague understanding of the communities:

Bronies response to flame: "Love and tolerate"
typical internet to flame: a string of obscenities.

But that's just for the OP.

There are double standards that harm our society, but it's not because they're double standards. I seriously doubt that most support for double standards come from pure idiocy or ignorance. There are two ways a double standard might exist:

In the first case, the hypocrisy could be an automatic reaction one makes, whenever one feels that something hold dear is threatened. A threat towards whatever you hold an emotional attachment to is perceived as a threat towards you. Most religious defences would fall into this category, as the religious person has such a strong bond to his/her faith, that (s)he overlooks all of the damages it has caused, even if people constantly point it out.

In the other cases, there might be a well thought out reason, as to why a double standard is supported. To give you an example, a possible reason for why men aren't as easily raped as women, is because it's much easier for guys to achieve an orgasm, while gals need to be in the right mood for this kind of thing. Now, one could argue the reason might be that females have a much more constrained and insecure sexuality than males, but that's another debate for another time.

Either way, pointing out a double standard and shouting 'HYPOCRITE', is not a legitimate method for silencing a certain stand point in a discussion. If you want people to step over to your opinion, you'll have to make it attractive to your intended target group.

So, we've all seen them and we've all HATED them. Double standards, the "I am fine with someone doing something, but I don't want another person to do the same thing" sort of logic. The ones that basically just piss you off at the stupidity of them, since well they are almost always just hypocrites and people who want to defend what them and them alone like.

Here's a controversial one to kick off the thread. How if an Adventure Time/Regular Show fan goes on a thread or post about ponies and say there show is better, nobody complains. Yet when a brony goes on an Adventure Time/Regular Show thread or post and says that they prefer MLP, then BAM they're a ****** brony shoving their shit down people's faces. It's also fine for people to come onto pony threads and posts, show the rule 34/my little holocaust pictures and denounce all bronies as pathetic lifeforms who should all die. When nobody ever goes on Adventure Time/Regular Show threads and post their rule 34/weird shit side and denounce all their fans as pathetic lifeforms who should die. This just pisses me off since well, the only reason I can think it happens is because they don't like seeing "girly" ponies. Also, I'll believe the argument that bronies shove MLP down people's faces WHEN people stop going onto purely pony related threads and posting hate, shoving it down the brony's faces. But alas, it's much easier to hate than to like something, that's what life is like something and you can't change that.
I just hate it when bronies get all up in my crap when I say I don't like the content bronies produce. The show is excellent, but its popularity has caused mountains of awful content to rise to the top alot of threads and websites that I visit. There's not many creative jokes or generally humorous pictures, its just alot of gif animations straight from the show disguised as laughable content. But I digress.

In summary
-I could give a detailed argument about how I might dislike adventure time and related fan items, and I would receive maybe a counter argument.
- I could write a detailed argument about why I dislike bronies and the surrounding culture and I would receive "Hey asshole, how come you don't love and tolerate" Way to live up to your message...

Finally, I believe both shows mentioned above are rather fine shows.

Okay then. Where did the universe come from? tiny dot, right?
where did that tiny dot come from?
Exactly, it existed because somebody said it existed.

Why is the "theory" of relativity accepted. because it came from Einstein.

Why is it okay for the pot to call the kettle black?

Wait, see that part where I actually made that related to double standards, instead of just a flame war.

Let's do that.

If I can't use evolution to prove my points, they can't use the Bible to prove theirs. It's a fair trade off. They can't call it a debate if they dismiss evolution right from the start.

It's only okay to derail a thread if it's to piss on what people believe.

Seriously, some people came to read about the actual topic.
