Yes. No. Maybe? There's something to be said for arguments which 'Prove too much'.
Just to avoid a double standard of only treating issues in which women get the shaft are worth calling out, I won't reprise my entries in a similar thread(though I will link to it [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.285506-Favorite-double-standards#11260066]) though they are interconnected(suffice it to say, it is related to the whole thing with varying comfort levels with differently gendered body types).
Instead, I'll...
point to a slight variant on it since it gets bought up on this site so often. Why is it considered okay when the classic super heroes wore more clothing than even their direct female counterparts:
but when the opposite is true,it is seen as 'proof' that female super heroes aren't 'allowed' to wear as much as the males, even when every other female member of the team wears more than the one example wearing less than some of the males on the team?:
Then, there is also this mess [http://youtu.be/4JA4EPRbWhQ].
It's because men are usually portrayed strong and dependent. The female super heroes who wear these similar and revealing outfits, however, usually possess less of said qualities and are more overtly sexualized.
I see your point. However, you might want to either snip or spoiler the large quote from Torrasque. It's common courtesy, as it clutters up the thread and makes the page take longer to load for our friends with bad internet connections.
It's absolutely a double standard, because one group, despite both of them doing the exact same thing, is treated more harshly than the other with no logical reason behind it. People get up in arms because of people posting a pony picture on a forum thread, and yet if one was posted of Futurama or Adventure Time or any other cartoon no one would bat an eye. If someone doesn't like MLP then that's absolutely fine, but people shouldn't automatically call out harmless brony activities because of it.
Back to the topic at hand, I think one particular double standard that I find annoying and hasn't been brought up yet is the idea that games aren't art. Critics deride games because they see the violent side of games like Grand Theft Auto and Call of Duty, and assume that all games are nothing but juvenile bloodbaths, and don't deserve to be called art because of it. And yet movies are made like Transformers or any Jason Statham vehicle, and no one says they make the making of films any less of an art.
That's not a double standard, it's a preference. It's not a double standard for me to like pears but hate apples. It is a double standard to think that lesbian sex is a-okay while homosexuality is morally wrong.
Homosexuality is wrong, because it says so in the Bible. Abominable, even. Harrumpf!
It also says in the Bible that you're not allowed to wear clothes made out of two different materials. Oh, that's just a metaphore or something, don't bother...
Ummm.... I don't know how to break this to you, but there are people [http://www.massresistance.org/region/newyork/images/statehouse_2535_480.jpg] who are not hypocritical about that.
Nowhere in the Bible does it say to take every single word literally. Nowhere does it state that you should pick apart each and every sentence and paragraph and tear it apart looking for every possible message you could get out of it, and to then follow specific ones (magically forgetting the ones you don't like so much) and act as if they are part of the Ten Damn Commandments. Speaking of which, those Ten Commandments are supposed to be the only part of the Bible everyone should take literally. They're a simple list of ten things that everyone should follow, which would make everyone's lives better. Simple and effective, and not easily mis-translated, so you know they probably haven't changed.
Speaking of that, translation isn't 1:1. The Bible has gone through several languages and English is FAR from the first one. Christians know this. The original word, which let's not forget, was written by humans in the first place, has been through numerous translations, meaning it's been subject to many different interpretations before arriving in the form we know it in now. There isn't even just one English-language Bible. What that says to me, and it's common sense that anyone reading it should realize this... it means that the words written on the pages may be vastly different in form and meaning from the original book. Even if every sentence were meant to be taken literally, which I highly, highly doubt, the meaning would be completely lost by now.
I like the messages in the Bible. The morals in there are usually fairly solid and it's the foundation of an organization about faith, well-meaning acts of kindness and overall getting along better with everyone. That its followers prefer to skew those messages into specific rules about homosexuality and other things only tells me they prefer to be sheep, following along with the pack rather than using their holy book as a general moral guide and finding their own meaning in it. Rather than loving their neighbors as themselves, they choose to hate and set down rules that were never meant to be rules.
I know not every Christian is like this. I know not every religious person is like this. But it's just sad, because I know for a fact that trying to hurt others and taking other people's freedoms is not in line with the TRUE message of their faith. Religion can be this wonderful thing but there's a frightening number of people out there who seem bent on using it to make life suck for anyone who doesn't blindly follow their faith.
Rape is one of the worst things that can happen to a woman and is most certainly nothing to laugh about. Prison rape against men though is hilarious.
Slapping a woman is domestic violence, it is evil and illegal. Only a monster would do it. On the other hand, slapping men, kicking them in the groin and throwing objects at them is not only ok, but humorous.
Oddly enough, while there's no doubt that finding rape and violence against men ok (and funny) is wrong, someone will try to defend it or worse, turn it around and blame the male victims.
really want you to see how guys can see it as being shameful. All guys don't think this way(myself included) but some do. Most of the time in porno, women are being degraded. Paying them to have sex on screen, but it is not always just that. After all there are pornos where the guy tries to to see how far he can shove his member down her throat as she gags for air. Really gross ones where all the men beat off into a cup, then the women drinks about a pint of semen. Don't think it's wrong for a women to enjoy sex, but the simple act of penetration is where guys start judging them. Of course it's not hard to see why. Some woman has had sex in every hole and some guy finds out about it, he tends to put her on a lower standard if he is not dating her.
but this has nothing to do with porn..I'm talking about real life...they are very different
yeah the natural reaction to somone who sleeps around and apears to have little self worth is negatve <-and mabye theres a correlation there (just going by anecdotal evidence)
but then people can be into all kinds of things, if they want to indulge whatever then thats their thing..regardless of gender
Really isn't that different. Alot of men have shaped their opinions of women through porno. Make it a point to tell me that we don't get influenced by what we see because it is not real life. Pretty much everyone on the planet has been influenced by some other means that may not ring true in the world around them.
No he was referring to the porn scenario where the plumber shows up to fix the house's pipes, and ends up having sex with the woman of the house, same thing as with the pizza guy and the pool boy

One that I end up encountering quite a bit would be the gay/lesbian one. "No two men being together is wrong. Now let me go watch some girl on girl porn."
when girls want to try to play video games, but they laugh and tell you its a waste of time when you ask them if they want to try. also, when pewdiepie fans accuse other LPers of being loud/bad at video games [pewdiepie still rocks though].

Added the movie to my Netflix Queue. Indeed, men can get an erection passed out and women can rape them. Of course, it's only rape if the genders were reversed.
That phrase makes me think of an episode of the Powerpuff Girls which happened to be about double standards.
Yes,Captcha, I do "take umbrage" with double standards.
Maybe I'm wrong but don't most Bible-centric religions follow only the new testament these days? The old one has all sorts of lovely (insane) messages in it, which leaves the people scrutinizing its every word and shouting that across the rooftops as truth open to arguments of people saying, "If X then why not Y? They're in the same book."
I don't know as much about the Bible as I could. I know even less about the Jewish faith. I only have casual knowledge and what you'd expect to pick up having been raised Episcopalian and attending church every Sunday. But ever since I was old enough to have my own opinion on the matter I've believed the Bible was simply a book of handy fairy tale-like lessons, explaining the lore and ideals behind God and Christ, not a textbook whose every sentence is to be memorized and recited verbatim. The only part I've ever felt should be taken at face value is the Ten Commandments. That's fairly timeless, indisputable good right there.
(full disclosure: I have no real religion, and I don't actually believe Bible lore)
I'll go with the favorite: Lesbians and looking at them online are all okay, but Male Gay men and Women getting married/having legitimate relationships are KILLING society.
These people are adorable.
It's not so much a double standard as a skewed view on the world around you, but it's close enough.
This is not silly, this is grim. A double standard full of hate and vile bigotry and violence, wouldn't recommend reading if you are in a cheerful mood.
I did find one double standard coming from MRA members over a recent 'SCUM' video released in Sweden. Essentially it was a rather gruesome video of young women killing a man for no reason and then celebrating, it was a staged depiction of violence that was horrific and wrong and should be banned. However the MRA members went the other way completely trying to put a bounty on the women's names, addresses, phone numbers and work contacts.
Essentially they were going to put their personal details up publicly and set it up in such a way that if a psychopathic killer wanted to, he could totally find them and hurt them. They didn't just do this for these actresses who staged violence however, also on the list are feminist bloggers and authors and even women who did nothing but question the MRA.
The double standard is that they claim to hate the celebration or glorification of violence in that SCUM video (an ad for a play incidently) and they decided the best course of action is to stalk, threaten and harrass the women involved and even though they themselves aren't going to hurt or kill them they are putting in resources to give a potential psycho the tools to do just that.
And they aren't just doing it for the video makers, they are doing it for just about every woman they see. So fictional depictions of violence are bad but stalking and threatening people and trying to get their home addresses and contact details to post online for any psychopath to find is okay?
Anyway Dave Futurelle at Manboobz covered this issue with two posts. I'll link them:
That video makes some good points actually, but it's pretty clear that guy starts overreacting a little when he implies men are becoming an oppressed minority. Didn't he also once have a huge rant on reddit in which he outright said this girl he disagreed with should be raped?
Not quite. What happened was he got into an argument with a group of feminists and the topic became about 'triggers' (you know that words or phrases can invoke trauma or PTSD into a person suffering from such) of which he was a vocal opponent, he didn't believe that was possible.
Eventually to prove this he started throwing around the dreaded 'R' word with much aggression and gusto, offending and sickening a lot of people and finally one of the feminists arguing with him essentially said:
"Look asshole as it happens I am a rape victim and I do find your callous attitude towards it very distasteful, would you knock it off?"
Whereupon The Amazing Athiest responded with... this:
(Spoilerd because it's horrific)
"Yeah. Well, you deserved it. So, fuck you. I hope it happens again soon. I'm tired of being treated like shit by you mean little cunts and then you using your rape as an excuse. Fuck you. I think we should give the guy who raped you a medal. I hope you fucking drown in rape semen, you ugly, mean-spirited cow. Actually, I don't believe you were ever raped! What man would be tasteless enough to stick his dick into a human cesspool like you? Nice gif of a turd going into my mouth. Is that kind of like the way that rapists dick went in your pussy? Or did he use your asshole? Or was it both? Maybe you should think about it really hard for the next few hours. Relive it as much as possible. You know? Try to recall: was it my pussy or my ass?"
He said this to a rape victim. In order to win a petty argument on Reddit he decided to purposefully attempt to trigger PTSD into a rape victim and then later whined like he was somehow a victim.
Personally I don't think there is a swear word vile enough for him and he should carry the stigma of that around his neck for the rest of his life. Because he is truly that appalling. Also should note that he was, at the time, taking support from the MRA section of reddit.
Thing is I consider myself a male feminist and I believe there are injustices that need to be addressed toward's mens issues as well (and every feminist I have ever met agrees with me on that). That is why the Amazing Athiest and the MRA and all of that make me so angry, they are the worst possible people to be representing this ideology, purely founded in hatred and misogyny and juvenile name calling.
I've never once seen the Amazing Athiest or any MRA member actually provide solutions for any of these 'mens issues' they keep bringing up. Instead they seem more content to just piss and moan like children.
