Tying game logic to framerate? I know that's actually still fairly common, but it feels so 00s.
It's really hard to explain. I may have been a bit over my heard from feeling so frustrated with the game. The only advice I can give is to try the demo yourself, and if possible on your platform, change the framerate limit.
The framerate being used a timer or what is still prettymuch a semi-common thing (I know it was a DPS issue in Destiny 2, lol).

The other thing with capping the framerate is also just consistency. Leaving it uncapped is down to the whims of whatever your hardware can pull off with whatever is going on the scene. And our monkey brains learning the visual cues at 120fps vs 103 fps vs 60 fps vs 98fps as it flip flops around might not be conciously recognizable, but will screw up any learned reflex.

Tried it. Spent some time trying to parry stuff, uncapped and capped at various framerates. No issues uncapped, tho that might be down to this game actually running really well without any frametime dips I could notice and my pc being beefy enough to keep framerates high at all times. Capping it didn't really feel any different tho. I'm wondering if parry windows actually are consistent, if pretty tight, but don't seem that way because enemies' jerky animatronic movement makes it hard to gauge when the actual hit comes out.

On last night's episode of Breakout, KC and Nick were over the freaking moon about this game.

So.. as of right now, my interest level is back to.. interested. First I was all over it, then I declared I'm done with soulslikes, but now I'm dipping back into Armored Core. Lies of P is just going to be a victim of there being too much right now and I'll consider checking out at some point in the future when:
1- I'm completely done with Armored Core
2- Am itching for a kick-my-ass-in-the-face game

As good as this game looks ive seen reviewers saying the dodge is still asscheeks which was my biggest turn off on the demo. So im likely skipping this game until it goes on a deep deep sale or something.

i heard that the dodge was significantly improved from the demo, and i really don’t recall it being bad though. It was the parry timing that threw me for a loop, as has been the case with any such game since Sekiro & Tsushima.

but that’s ok i’m not touching this unless/until i beat AC6

I can tell you parrying is mostly easier in Tsuhima compared to Sekiro. Tshushima still did a few tough enemy types (mainly The Straw-Hats) and certain bosses have really tough timing windows.

I heard the same thing, but apparently it's still bad, or at least doesn't behave the way one expects playing a Souls-like. Either way I'm out because I'm the kind of Souls player who relies on dodge for 90% of my defensive options. If the dodge is bad that will fuck me right out of the game.

From what I've seen, yeah, this game doesn't do a very good job of telling the player what they're expected to do. This is something that can be fixed, but will it?
SkillUp's editor Austin "strongly recommends" the game, noting that it does end up locking the player into one playstyle due to committing upgrade materials that can't be reassigned.
So a Souls-like being just like Dark Souls is now bad game design? What about Dark Souls then?

I haven’t watched the review yet but maybe people want the QoL improvements that have been added to the genre since Dark Souls came out like 12 years ago? The big example that comes to mind is checkpoints near boss fights.

well sure, in the sense that everything is easier in Tsushima as it is purposefully a much more accessible game. But in both games, it’s that the parrying mechanics make sense and is fair and “feels right.”

Like sure it took me 100 attempts to beat Genichiro in my first play-through but after the first dozen I was able to consistently parry his 7- hit flurry attack because it made sense. As opposed to see Wo Long where I’d see the parryable attack coming but it was a gamble on whether it would connect.

Lies of P demo was somewhere in between.

Don't waste too much time on Phoenix. He's known for being contrarian, and his arguments boiled down to "I don't have a problem with it/I don't see the big deal".

There's three type of ways these type of action games do parrying: the Third Strike way (tapping a d-pad, arcade stick, or control stick in the direction the attack is coming just before it hits), the God of War way (both eras that involve pressing a shoulder button), and the Devil May Cry way (the Parry button being on either the Circle or B/whatever button to the corresponding controller). Then there's Metal Gear Rising where you have to use the direction of the analog stick and press the attack button. I usually prefer the DMC way. Sekiro is that combination of God of War by being on the shoulder button camera and is more of the Japanese way by having way tighter timing like Rising, Ninja Gaiden, or DMC.
