Well I was looking at the forums and was wondering, how do people know when a thread is going to be locked?

Content, knowing what the mods look for, that kinda thing. I imagine getting a feel for them gets to becoming second nature after a little while.

Because it asks a stupid question, holds no information, has no room for discussion, or has been done before.

Yeah. If you see a thread and people post things along the lines of "In before the lock", remember what the thread was about (or the content of the recent posts)so you know what to avoid.

Kl thanks, so really its just a guess though
An educated guess. Stick around long enough and you'll likely get a feel for the sorts of topics that are bound for a run in with Locky von Lockington. Here's a tip for you: if you're thinking about posting a new thread, do a search for the topic first, to make sure it hasn't already been covered.

Or, as I call him: Lock, Lock and Two Smoking Ban-els.

No, that's when you're supposed to act like a dick and attempt to make a "witty" comment about how the thread is inconceivably horrible and the person who created it is extremely far below you on the universal scale and possibly the ultimate evil. You can also post pictures with your "witty" comment or just the picture if you're lazy.
Well, of course. I was just giving the abridged version (we don't want him to know all our secrets now, do we?).

Yes you do
Well, if you insist. The cookies are kept under the stairs. We keep them hidden, and only give them out if someone gets a pop culture reference.

Reference = Guy Ritchie?s Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels

Where are my cookies?

Are Guy Ritchie films mainstream in the UK?
Yeah, I have my very own Guy Ritchie collection. I just need rock 'n' rolla now.

So, to sum up this thread: Look at what threads get locked so you know what to avoid, and everyone here gets a cookie.

Yay! Cookie! Wait, what's this? Pecan!?

It seems to me that saying a thread is about to get locked is a little bit of a postcount pusher, but occasionally it's funny, so I don't mind it at all. Generally you can tell if a thread is about to be locked if the OP features less than two sentences. And a poll.

Hell, even Wilson made an 'In b4 the lock' post earlier this evening (GMT).

I think you'll find that those aren't pecans. They are miniature chocolate-chip cookies embedded in the original cookie. I know what people want.

Sometimes a thread will be left unlocked for what seems to be an inexplicably long time. It is my theory that the mods use them as asshat-traps. They'll let it get good and flamey, and then when all the trolls are warming their hands over a fire fueled with 100% post-consumer, recycled Stupid, there will be a banhammer raid and whoever doesn't get smacked gets put on probation. Then they lock it.
