Obama just announced that within four years he will raise the amount of days months and years we go to school, the only upside is for the teachers who will most likely be very pleased because they get pay raises

What are your thoughts on a longer school day?
For me its a Meh, school is too easy for me, so its another hour or so of boredom, but maybe this will halt the spread of Innumeracy and Stupidity (i doubt it though).
Thats the thing, why torture the kids who listen and pay attention?

The retards who don't appreciate it will still be... retards

I'm glad I'm a freshman, only 3 more years of school to go...
But this is sort of, for lack of a better term, bullshit. Making the school year longer will NOT make our students better. It will not make people more educated. All it will do is make people develop even more of a loathing for our schools, and for our education system.
The reason that many of our American students don't learn isn't because they don't have sufficient time to do their work and learn their required material. It's because they are completely and utterly unwilling to learn, and on top of that, our teachers are idiots reading out of books at us. I could outsmart many of my teachers while writing essays. But past that, even, from the beginning, there is just something that most people don't WANT to learn. They, as stated above, are unwilling. From the beginnings of school, all the TV shows for kids shout one thing at kids: School is boring, school stinks, tests are hard!
So, as soon as we begin school, we seem to be programmed to hate it and hate learning. Just an observation. *Shrug*

You young whippersnappers, with your longer school days. Back when I was your age, we had to go 12 years to school, for six days every week and we were happy about it!
We had to walk through 2 feet of snow wearing sandals all year carrying 50 pound book bags, and it was uphill both ways!

Longer school hours/days/weeks/months/years would mean more cash required for education. It's a nice dream to have, but everybody knows the only thing politicians do to education funding is slash the hell out of it.
Obama's the spending type, if you couldn't already tell from the, you know, trillion or so dollars he's already spent.

Where I live the schools are adding 45 minutes to the school day to compensate for time lost due to an ice storm. Let me tell you it is not fun, nor does it do anything for our education, seeing as all the students are exhausted and don't pay attention anyway!

meh, more education is exactly what this country needs. as for the longer days it's not like high school aged kids do anything that demands their time. Homework as it stands is a joke. A part time job will pale in comparison to a full time job making real money, so I say go ahead and make the days longer. It's for your own good. Thank you Obama for actually caring about the education of our youth. I won't be able to benefit, but at least my children will.

^You see that? This kind of post is why people think kids are so uneducated. People on the internet just need to learn to spell better, because this is what makes our American youth looks bad.
Although, I don't even know if you're American, or you you're part of the "youth", so, in either case, please excuse me for using you as an example. >.>

I went to school for a year longer than average due to country hopping alot, It wasn't so bad. Infact I'd go so far as to say it helped. I don't think I'd have been ready for some of my exams a year earlier.

So quit moaning, once its the norm, people are generally accepting. I'd say an extra year in school isn't so bad really, some people struggle to hit maturity, and the more that do it quickly and in school, with that extra little stretch of time, the better.

"Mr.Teacher", if that is your real name/occupation, I'm talking not about loathing the schedule we have now, but what are we going to do with more days? more time? more money?, if we don't know how to use it?

The thing is, this isn't going to provide more education for most kids!
Longer year=/=More educated children
More funding=/=More educated children
All that a longer year will do is torture the kids who understand what's going on and everything, so that they have to stay in school, learning and relearning information even more, whereas the kids who don't care about it will continue to not care about it, but they'll care about it even less because they're sitting in school when the school year should have been over by then.

EDIT:

But he never specified if it was going to be one, two, or even three years longer. I imagine three with how much Obama likes to spend

I'm all for Teachers getting pay raises. I could never deal with some of the kids I know on that kind of pay.

I want to know how long a school year is over in the UK. Here in the US it's 180 days, but in Switzerland I think it's around 220 days. More days of school is probably better, but it's all for naught if they can't make the students care. Be sure to recruit more good teachers. I'm lucky to live in a very excellent school district, so I have very good teachers, but many schools just don't have the resources to keep the students interested.

Your actually taking this persons word that he is a teacher. You are also on the internet. This is usually enough evidence to suggest a fabrication is evident.

Edit: And yes I am a part of the American Youth.
