I have to say that this opening stattement makes me not take you very seriously.
It may appear that you are not much better than them in regards to prejudice.

You might want to avoid that in the future, as it makes it more likely that you are taken seriously.
A statement of observation isn't prejudice.

Okay... First problem, your still in Highschool. Nothing that happens there matters.

and there are these 3 girls there really rude mean dumb and slutty.
If they are dumb, rude, mean and slutty why does it matter?

Anyway they asked me what i do on the weekends and i said 'I play video games and write about different topics on The Escapist'
Why are you talking to them? Did you seriously let yourself get baited by people you refer to as dumb, rude, mean and slutty?

and then they say something offensive 'If you play games and are on a nerd site then why arnt you Fat and Lazy?'
That's not offensive. Your being sensitive. During Highschool. Might wanna get some stone skin buddy or your going to get your ass kicked SO hard.

Anyway do you think that this is how people look at us?

because i get this reaction alot

Your in highschool.

You need to stop talking to people you would describe as dumb rude mean and slutty.

Your going to turn into the guys who talk about how "There is a stigma on gamers!" or bicker endlessly about how everyone is agaisnt gamers or some other stupid victim complex shit.

Next time someone rude, mean, dumb and slutty asks you that question say you ride dirt bikes around a volcano. Or ignore them. Either way.

Seriously, those two things right there ends all debate on the labels "Gamer" and "Nerd".

There is no knowledge that is not power.

Bah... people are idiots, the next time you see them tell them to stop looking at things with the stigmas that society has labeled for the Gamer Group i.e. fat and lazy and to actually take the time to look and get to know a gamer for who he/she is.

Eh, don't listen to them. People stereotype, and sadly those are the two negative ones for the gaming community.
Many people are idiots that make assumptions, if you're into something, don't change and have pride.

I've never encountered anyone that looked down on gamers. Though I've never met anyone that's completely never gamed. I think it could have some to do with the fact that I'm Swedish. We like games around here.

I've NEVER had that problem. Even in grade school/High School, I wasn't really known as the "Cool" type, I never mentioned out loud I was a gamer generally, but when asked I wouldn't deny it. People were either like, "Okay, cool", or "Eh." I was never made fun of about it though, even by the jerky cheerleaders and whatnot.

I think it's about how you carry yourself. Even if I'm not the most confident person on my own, people hardly ever think that in person since I act like a cocky, confident guy when I'm around people. And I don't really think gaming has been looked negatively upon for YEARS now, it's grown significantly, but I don't think since I've been around, it's really been frowned upon.

I generally don't get that treatment anymore, everyone and their dog used to to share it in my secondary school though, I honestly don't see how wasting your time in from of the Jeremy Kyle show or playing football is any better (granted the last one does get you fit, but it also requite you freeze your tits off). None of them contribute anything greater to society.

I'll get the odd glance when I tell people I'm studying games at uni "Aaaaah it's a dead industry, you'll be lucky to get into it" "There's only 40 jobs in the UK in games" (utter BS, btw) "You'll never make it, do something worthwhile" but thats more cause I'm studying them, not playing them. If people look down on me for playing games they're aren't the people I wish to associate with anyways.

It's High School it can be pretty frustrating. Just don't go on any school shootings and you'll make it through in one piece. Also get to know some of the cool teachers there, they can really help make your high school experience better.

People are incredibly stupid, and you shouldn't ever think that their opinion matters. You shouldn't be ashamed of your hobby.

OT: You don't JUST play videogames on the weekend, right? You have something else going on in your life, some other form of social activity?

If not, and there are likely people on here reading this, then those idiot girls are at least a little right. I LOVE videogames. When my wife left for a work retreat one weekend, I told my friends I was going along, ordered 3 pizzas and played videogames for two days straight. BUT, you have to have a life outside of video games.

There's a reason people who play games are looked down upon, and that's because it can become all-consuming. Games are so fun, that you really don't need to do anything else and you'll have a good time. But some people realize this, and decide that everything else isn't worth the effort and shut themselves inside their homes and lose connection with the rest of society.

These girls asked what you do on weekends. In your answer, you had an opportunity to define yourself outside of the forced-social environment. What you say you do, and what you do do, define you as an individual. If you said you help orphans learn to read, then that is what you are. If you said you write books, that is what you are. Maybe you snowboard occasionally, maybe you take photographs, maybe you cook. But you said videogames.

Videogames are fun, but they are also easy. Yes, there are difficult games, but it is far easier to throw in a different disc than it is to call someone and ask if they want to do something. Some gamers know this, and so they choose to stay isolated. Games become what they are. And in the end, though gaming is fun and sometimes challenging, all you are truly doing is pushing buttons. That is what you are.

I'm not recommending that the next time people ask this question, and they will, that you lie. But take 2 weekends, do something amazing that you've always wanted to do, and when someone asks say "Sometimes, I _______. Otherwise, I play videogames." And for good effect, add, "Or I hang out with friends doing nothing." Doing nothing with friends is always doing something. If you play games with friends (in person), then say you're hanging out with friends and drop the videogame line.

Everyone plays videogames. But the only people who are looked down upon for doing so are the ones who are defined by it. And even as a gamer, someone who has been a gamer for a long time, I look down on people who are defined only by playing videogames.

this is true in every sense of the phrase. Anywhoo.. I really haven't gotten that because of the fact that way too many people I know play games, even if they aren't considered gamers and so they don't recognize the stereotype. I think this is starting to happen a lot more.

No matter that it is, your taste in music, your hobbies, gaming.
If it's different from what the "cool" kids like, they'll call you out about it.
In the end, don't listen to them, the ignorance they show is at such a grand level that there isn't a word to describe how stupid they are.

I used to get shite for my music taste and my love of gaming (including pokemonz aww yeah) And now, I'm working towards a well paid career, have a wonderful girlfriend, a good group of friends. And the people that gave me shit are behind the counter in shops with a dead end job.

Popularity sure got them far.
