Sounds cool, but I wonder what changes are going to be instated. I don't want to pay a ton of money for microtransactions (I have no idea about how they handled DDO free)

I thought this game was better than WoW. I played it when the beta first came out and got hooked on it. Only thing stopping me now from playing it is that monthly fee. I got better things to spend $15 on than a game.

Looking forward to this

How odd...

They made a song and dance over the lifetime sub offer a month or two ago, so really this is a bit of a cheeky move.

I approve of there being free/microtransaction games, but I'm starting to worry more and more games will go this way. I played DDO for a while after it went free, and it was a hassle sometimes to make sure everyone in a group knew they had to have bought content or to find groups for certain premium areas. Sometimes I want to play a game where I won't have to worry about it, so it's good that subscription-based games are still around.

Ultimately, I applaud LOTRO for going free (and I'll probably check it out now -- Turbine can thank Shamus for that). I just don't want every game taking that route (unless there were "subscriber servers").

I've played it for a while and simply quit because of thre little time I have at the moment. If it's free anyway you should all try it out.

The thing that kept me hooked was that LotRO is in fact a story driven MMORPG. Yes, you can make epic things happen which will be further shown in cutscenes. And you get a very satisfying sense of accomplishment out of it.

Great, now if only the damn thing will actually run. Seriously, I've signed up for free trials in this game twice and never got past character creation before it crashed. Very, very lame. I'll give it another shot once it goes free, I guess.

As an avid LOTRO'er I'm cautiously optimistic about the change. By most accounts DDO actually got better after the change to a F2P model and thinking of an even better LOTRO makes me somewhat giddy. Sure there will be issues but if this brings Turbine more development money to make a great product an even better one then I can't find much to argue with.

As a player, though, I do still worry quite a bit about what will be available in the market. I'm far from a power player myself, but the idea of someone just popping in with theer credit card and buying a fell set of end game gear plus an inventory full of buffing items and potions just doesn't sound like a good thing.

I'd actually like to hear what Shamus has to say about this move, and about Free To Play/Marketplace driven games in general. Would be a nice change from the constant DRM articles hehe

It's still not a bad deal for the lifetime subscribers (I am one myself).

There's still a paying tier of members that get access to a bunch of things without paying, plus some virtual currency every month (~$8 worth). The lifetime subs get the same thing, including the virtual currency, for "free". In some way it kind of makes the lifetime subscription even more valuable.

Now all we need is Age of Conan to be free as well.
That would be great! I've always liked Age of Conan, but not enough for monthly payments...

I played for a bit. It was quite fun, but I'm not the MMO type really, but if I can come and go as I please for free I will be sure to pop in every now and again.

Good to know for a rainy day.

What is the pvp like in this game? Without faction based pvp, sorry but I don't care. My new MMO is probably gonna be warhammer.

Well darn, now I'm pretty much going to have to play this, as Shamus's articles on the game make it sound hilarious. Curse them for taking away my excuse not to waste countless hours of my free time, curse them I say!

its going to have to they need to realize that P2P is in fact, a dying breed. WoW might still have millions, also Aion (correct me if im wrong) but with something like GW2 coming out that is more original then both of them and will be Triple A content and such. I dont see P2P being alive in the fallowing years.

Free is free :D The way I see it this is a good way on working on people buying into the game.

I mean think about it. Because it's free you attract a whole lot of people, and because you attract a whole lot of people a whole lot of people find lots of other people they enjoy spending time playing with, they get up to level x and have to pay .... so they do!

I personally reckon it was the thing that made WoW so successful ... trial period CDs ...

Not only that but people tend to feel guilty. They fall in love with a game and feel guilty they are playing for free, so even though they may not enjoy it so much when they get up to the point where they can go no further without paying, they might just do so despite their brain telling them it's not worth it.

Even if they are no longer enjoying online games as they did when they first started.

But free is free :D so I might give it a go! That being said I dont really like mmos and might stick to MH3 n.n

Ah, that's a pretty good deal then.
