Wait? Giving away your stuff for free gets more profit than selling it?
This must be a plot to make us give away all our possessions for free so they can sell it on ebay afterwards!
Yup, think about it, Free to play gets more people to join, then you find out some "cool items" are for sale and you spend $5 getting them. its the farmville/runescape tactic and the reason they are so popular today.

also your post count is scaring me, looks like the devil is in your posts.

Since when can you buy premium items on runescape?

I can't wait...I do like the look of this game and I'm curious and I want to play. But seems some of the LotRO fanbase is a bit pissed... [http://forums.lotro.com/showthread.php?t=335121]

What is the pvp like in this game? Without faction based pvp, sorry but I don't care. My new MMO is probably gonna be warhammer.
PvP in LOTRO is something of a strange animal.

There are two sides, Free Peoples (Freeps) and Sauron's Forces (Creeps)

Freeps are any player character above level 40. In the regular game world you can take a horse ride from, generally, one of the starting area stables to the Ettenmoors. The entire 'Moors region is PvP enabled and features numerous points of strategic interest under control by either Freep or Creep forces. Skills, items, etc. function a little differently in the Moors than they do in the regular game world but for the most part your regular character is the same as your PvP character and can travel back and forth freely.

Creeps are monster characters chosen from a stable of the types present in the PvE world (giant spiders, wargs, various Orcs with unique abilities, etc.). They are pre-levelled to be competitive from the get-go as they do not have access to anywhere but the Moors (so no real PvE world to level through). You do have to spend points you acquire on making them even stronger and buying new/better skills.

By most accounts, the biggest problem in the Moors (LOTRO PvP) is the lack of particularly large upgrades over the span of the game's existence to this point (though there seems to be news that this new FTP direction will include upgrades to the Moors). People who love to PvP seem to really enjoy the Moors and many play there exclusively, never touching the PvE game except to level to the new cap and get new gear with each expansion. There are even people who play pretty much exclusively Creep-side and don't even play PvE at all.

Since when can you buy premium items on runescape?
Membership $5 for 1 month, and you can only buy certain items/do certain quests while in members. :)

That's just the standard subscription thing all pay-2-play MMOs have, instead of additional stuff you pay for, they made part of the game free.

Hmm. Always wanted to try this out. Maybe now I'll get the chance without needing the hassle of subscription fees. Cool.

I tried the trial, and then stopped. Maybe this will convince me to play again, since I don't really think any game is worth £8 a month.

I played DDO online and Shamus' little article makes me want to actually play it myself. It looks pretty cool and I love the books. If it truly does go free sometime over the summer, I'll give it a try.

Lord of the Rings Online Going Free-to-Play

Lord of the Rings Online, the MMOG set in J.R.R. Tolkien's legendary fantasy world, will become a free-to-play game later this year.

Raise your hand if this sounds familiar: A World of Warcraft [http://www.turbine.com/] pie but ends up with nothing but a fork in its hand for its trouble. After sulking (and bleeding) for awhile, it heads for a nearby soup kitchen for some free grub and discovers to its amazement that the food there is actually pretty damn good and there's lots of it, too.

I could be referring to free-to-play [http://www.ddo.com/] in September 2009, but I'm actually talking about its fellow fantasy MMOG Lord of the Rings Online.
I've been ignoring this news post because I thought it was a necro-post. It took me a while, even after reading the news post for it to click.

See, I loved this game when I tried it. Very nice community...well, now that it's going free 13 year olds will plague the game I'm sure, Just like DDO. Sad, I was hoping to sign up and play with the good community. Maybe I'll try it again still, but I know the community will be ruined after this.

Say hello to all the uber 1337 pwnerzzz.

LOTRO is going free-to-play? Interesting. So in other words, I spent 300 dollars on a lifetime subscription...and Turbine rewards me with a large shaft up the ****. Does that sound about right?

No its much different, where as WOW ect, you have to play to play it online, runescape offers it free, paying for a month is more of a bonus and you don't -need- to do it.
but if you do you can get some awesome armour/weapons.

What happens if I already have an account though? Will I get some benefit for being a original customer?

To all of you that feel this way, I urge you to not bother. If you want to play a free, high quality MMO from Turbine, go play DDO. DDO is leagues better in the design department, about on par with the story of LOTRO, and does all of it without the insane travel times between quests.

The quest setup in DDO is vastly superior, with every dungeon having a touch of uniqueness to it instead of having 200 samey caves/mines to every unique castle/lair. Seriously, I'm about to restart a character on DDO after not playing it for a few months, so I can help ya out if you want...haven't decided which server, though.

That depends. How long have you had the Lifetime for? How often do you play and do you plan on playing even after F2P goes live? Would you rather have a gimped, heavily restricted, free access to the game or a well rewarded, full access to all content without paying a dime AND getting free store points each month that you can use to buy, for free, any new expansion that come out later thus eliminating the real-world money you'd have to pay for expansions anyway if the game didn't go F2P?

If you've had Lifetime access for 1.5-2 years then it's already paid for itself. If you reach the 1.5-2 year point in the next several months before F2P goes live then your Lifetime will have paid for itself before the change.

Lifetime accounts can get up to close to 5000 FREE store points (about a $50 value) just as a loyalty reward BEFORE the F2P even goes live while collecting another 500 free points each month after the F2P change. You can save those points and use them to pay for expansion content without having to pay the $20-30 you USED to have to pay for expansions. There are other benefits too that Lifetimer accounts get, but basically we're considered full VIP account status forever while everyone else has gimped free status or normal VIP status which they lose if they stop paying their monthly subscription.

I still think Lifetime is worth it, even for those who buy it now. The game has at least another 7 more years on it (2017 license expires). 500 Points/mo x 12 mo = 6000 points/year x 7 years = 42,000 free points. 1000 points = about $10, so we Lifetimers get about $420 (plus more for bonuses) worth of points all for free over the course of the remaining game which as has been said can be used to buy any new expansions, thus never pay a dime on anything for the rest of the game.
