This is James Cameron's fault.
If it was any other movie and any other director, I'd agree with you. But it's George Lucas! One of our (once) great-GREAT movie minds! The guy had a could create whatever he wanted to, but instead he chooses to milk a dead cow. Once upon a time, Cameron probably looked up to George. No, this isn't Jame Camerons fault. Cameron is probably face palming as much as any of us.
Why would you think that? Cameron's proven repeatedly that he's the same kind of director as Lucas. He's recut and/or re-released a number of his own movies. And Cameron is 3D's biggest proponent. I'm more likely to believe that Cameron personally convinced Lucas to do this than I am to believe he's "probably face palming as much as any of us."

Make no mistake, Cameron thinks this is a great idea.
Mostly because Cameron is still making new movies. He has a department to rehash old dvds, but Cameron is still making new movies. Lucas, however, doesn't make new movies. The 4th Indy movie is almost an exception, in that it's a new movie, but it's an old property. He's still living off of his old properties for the most part. Cameron has been working on Avatar since forever, but still has released unique movies like Steve Izuzu (forget the exact spelling), and has plans to release other movies. Lucas made Star Wars, and Indiana Jones, and not much else.

Not to mention, Lucas is notorious for releasing, re-releasing, re-re-releasing his star wars property. If there's a new format, or new way to see his star wars movies, he'll release a version just for it. Cameron, not so much. I imagine every director saw a spike in the birth of blu-ray and hd-dvd situation. But Cameron has not released 80 versions of his terminator franchise.
All of that is beside the point, which remains the same: first, Cameron is not "facepalming" this, he's the biggest 3D nutjob in the business, so he's in favor. And at the very least, the success of Avatar absolutely fast-tracked this Star Wars thing. Without Avatar, maybe Lucas does it, and maybe he doesn't. It still stands that Avatar is the main reason 3D is so popular right now.

I think you're (and now that I think of it, others) misunderstanding why I said Cameron was disappointed with Lucas. Cameron is probably very thrilled about being a trend setter in terms of 3d. But as creative minds, Lucas stagnates. A new re-release from Lucas is not surprising, but creative people the world over grow ever more disappointed in that very trend because Lucas does it so much. It is for THAT reason Cameron is disappointed.

But no, I agree with Cameron being thrilled about 3D. I dunno it he's CRAZY about it. Certainly did his part in making it the new big thing, and took some dedication. But I feel like his enthusiasm for it has been exagerated. :)

Ah, Star Wars and 3D. Two great tastes that taste great together.

No, that didn't come out right. Two thoroughly beaten concepts that have no business being anywhere near each other, and could both stand to fuck right off for a while.

Yeah, that's more like it.

I'd go into more detail, but let's face it: anything I could say has already been said, and not just in this thread.

-

Oh, all right, but I'm keeping it short, for my sanity as well as yours.

3D: It was a gimmick back in the 50's. It died. It's still a gimmick, and hasn't improved much. I already wear glasses. Putting those cheap cardboard things over them does nothing of enhancing the experience, and it hurts my nose. I can only hope 3D dies off faster this time around.

That, or the rest of the entertainment industry needs to replicate Nintendo's 3DS voodoo magic so we don't need the cheap cardboard things. Then it'll be a slicker, better done gimmick that might have some merit.

Who am I kidding? It'll still need to die off again. Wake me up when we get holodecks.

Star Wars: Fuck it. Lucas, you go and do whatever the hell you want. Want to add more shit to the Blu-rays? Good for you! Want to do 3D, even though it was never meant to be seen that way? Go do it! I have the '93/'94 releases and two working Laserdisc players. I'm set.

All of the Star Wars movies in theaters? I don't care if it's in 3D, and I haven't seen the original trilogy on the big screen. Sign me up.

Am I the only one understanding that this is not a re-edit but simply the same movies in 3D? There will be no additional changes, scenes, or lines, so why get upset about it? Think about how awesome Star Wars would look if the 3D actually looks good! Imagine the podrace, the trench run, the A-wing crashing into the bridge of the Executor... If nothing is being done to further mess up the best films ever made (speaking specifically of the original trilogy here), and it could actually look awesome, what reason is there to complain?

I get perverse enjoyement out of this.

It's like watching a trainwreck, except the guy causing the trainwreck wasn't quite sure it was horrible enough, so he's gonna do it again with some explosives aboard.

Couldn't agree with you any more.

Hasn't Lucas proven he's lost his mind enough and is only in it now for the payday?
Lucas was never a good director. He directed first Star Wars and new trilogy. And those movies suck. 2 movies that he didn't direct were awesome. That speaks enough about his directing skills. I know that probably 90% of escapist will hate me for this but George Lukas is a talentless idiot. He proved it with new trilogy, with remastered original trilogy, and now he's gonna prove it again.

THANK YOU! Jeez, would it really be such a crime to make new movies with EU-based characters?

I love Star Wars to death but COME ON!!! It's done! Concentrate on NEW THINGS!

Wait...two Indiana Jones movies? Which of the original are you not a fan of? Because of the original three, I prefer Raiders and Crusade.
He probably disliked Indiana Jones and the Temple of Cheap Plot Devices. Honestly, I liked Kingdom of the Crystal Skull quite a bit more than Temple, though it still lagged a long way from Raiders and Crusade.

Crystal Skull is a good movie, but when you compare it to the other three it is like somebody dressed as Luke at a Star Trek convention. Both similar and good, but they have obvious differences.

That's really how I felt about it (if you really want to read what I thought: http://jadedscribe.blogspot.com/ Click the Indiana Jones tag, or look through July's posts for all 4 Jones' movies).

The science-fiction aspect just didn't fit with Indiana Jones, and was so unnecessary for a legend as rich as El Dorado is.

But I still felt it was truer to the spirit of Indiana than Temple was. With the James Bond beginning, and a crappy plot, it just didn't feel like Indiana.

If they manage to give Hayden Christiansen's performance any Depth it'll be a miracle.
*applause*

But yes come on George, this is just pitiful. Star wars started out alright has spawned a rich and compelling universe. Why not explore more of it than the same six films?

Aw, come on, folks. A lot of us can look forward to taking our kids to see the original trilogy in theaters, even if it is to see a gimmicky 3D version where Han still won't shoot first.

They did. It's called "Star Wars: The Clone Wars", and was a feature-length pilot for the CGI animated series.

No!
NO!
They are SO going to make more horrible changes! And I don't even like 3D! Gah!!!!
*sigh* Again Lucas goes, trying to milk even more money out of our beloved Star Wars.
And they're remaking the Originals again?
NO!!!!
Leave the core plot alone already! You have SO much else to do! Just look at how many Expanded Universe books there are! Why not make an Old Republic [NOT Knights of the Old Republic related] movie or a New Jedi Order movie?

AND IT SUCKED GOATS.
Well, to be fair, it wasn't Lucas' fault that it sucked, nor was it Tartokovsky's (the creator of the mini-series that the art-style was based on).

Granted, as a movie it wasn't the best, but as one big pilot episode, I'd say it did its job pretty well. Probably would have done better had it not been released in theaters, but eh, it's Star Wars, so Lucas got away with it.
