Why not just remake the original trilogy, George? You clearly want to and you're going to piss us off anyways.

It's times like these I'm glad I still have my original VHS copies of Star Wars. I'll be enjoying their unaltered goodness this weekend.

OH SHIT HE ADDED ONE WHOLE WORD. GET TO THE BUNKER~!

Jokes aside, I don't see what the big deal is. It's his movie, he has the right to change it or not. If you have a problem with it go to Skywalker Ranch and hold him at gunpoint B|
Small changes can ruin entire scenes. This, for example, pretty much entirely destroys the dramatic tension. Same thing happens when he adds a bunch of goofy CGI shit in the background. It also distracts you from the crap that's actually important on screen.

Cut that man some slack. He at least felt some sort of guilt for releasing the movies AGAIN, so that some part of him felt like doing some actual work...
The Emperor does not share your optimistic appraisal of the situation. :)

I just can't get my head around why anyone would continue to tinker with his movies while completely ignoring the fans. It's not just that the alterations are invariably bad, the whole principle is plain wrong. It's just... WHAAA!

I despair... but unfortunately I am not surprised as this is to be expected from the hack that Lucas has become.

I don't care about Star Wars in 1080p, and I will actively avoid it now I know he will be fucking around with what works so well. And fucking with a film HE DID NOT DIRECT!

Yes, Return of the Jedi was directed by Richard Marquand who was a very talented director and probably would be more well known if not for dying in 1987 at the age of 49. And yet Lucas has the nerve the make directorial decisions on this great man's work in this creative career that was so horribly cut short.

Marquand can see what is obvious to us now (after almost 30 year) how Vader being silent worked so well.

Oh, and Empire was directed by Irvin Kershner. Died less than a year ago.

As a writer, I know all too well the painful lesson of "When Is It Done?" Every time I look back on anything I've written, ever, I always want to change something. Maybe just a word here or there, maybe a tweaked scene, maybe a little more foreshadowing here, one quick extra scene there... and it's a whole new ordeal again.

It's a horribly difficult lesson for any artist to learn, because It Could Always Be Better. Especially if you've lived with it for a long time. Lucas has lived with this magnum opus for 30+ years now. Of course he still wants to tinker. He's no better or worse than anyone else for feeling that urge. He's had decades of hindsight to think "oh, it would have been so much better if I just did this little thing differently..."

George Lucas, please don't give in. Of course you think you can make it even better. But every artist reaches a point, with every one of their works, that they must let it go, leave it to wander the world on its own, to meet with success or failure in its own way.

The Star Wars Trilogy is unquestionably a labour of love. You've done a wonderful job of raising it. It's grown into adulthood and become a shining example of goodness. I know you want to make it even better, but please. Let it live its own life.

If you love it, set it free. It has come back to you with open arms. It loves you. Now respect it in its adulthood, and the lessons it has learned, and how it has grown.

Star Wars lives because of you, George Lucas. Now let it live its beautiful life.

A thought just occurred to me. What do you bet that in about 5 to 10 years Lucas Film is going to announce that they are re-releasing the original films on DVD/Blu-Ray/Whatever and charge an arm and a leg for them?

If we keep annoying the fan base with alterations and then offer them the originals again, we can charge whatever we want! BWA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!

rofl, this is just incredibly stupid. I'm not a huge Star Wars fan, and even I'm kinda pissed off.

And could they have made Vader sound more apathetic with that first 'no'? It sounds like someone trying to figure out what to do for dinner:

"How about meatloaf?"
"No..."
"Fine, let's just do Arby's again"
"NOOooo..."

Well, time to show some other alterations!

CGI Yoda in Phantom Menace:

Ewoks have CGI eyes:

And Greedo STILL shoots first!!!!

Okay, I don't mind CGI Yoda so much, because the Phantom Menace puppet looked like shit (plus, it's more consistent with AotC and RotS), but the Ewok eyes are just fucking creepy. And although the editing is much tighter, Greedo is fractionally faster. Wasn't the reasoning behind the change originally to show Han wasn't a cold-blooded killer? (Lucas's words, not mine) It happens so quickly now, it baffles me how Han can shoot back after Greedo shoots at him

Regardless, this has to end now...this is far enough, Lucas. You're not changing the film to match your original vision anymore; you're changing things for the sakes of changing things, and it has to stop

It is official, George is just out to troll the fans now, all there is to it.

There is no other explanation that I can really give.
Can you really blame him. All they tend to do it *****, and moan.
There is probably a good reason for that.
There is no good reason for whining like a bunch of spoiled brat children.
Did you not watch that video?

Or have you, like, not seen Star Wars or something? or do you just not care?

If you don't care... WHY ARE YOU HERE?!?!

I'll stick with the DVD version of the original trilogy. The changes there are still acceptable (except for Hayden Christensen appearing at the end).
I really love Star Wars but I wish Lucas would just leave it alone and just hand it to Bioware, as they already showed us that they can take it in interesting new directions.

Yeah, no. I can only assume the money and power went to his head and he went senile.

(I was actually trying to find the video of him ruining other peoples films. Can anyone find it?)

I didn't pre-order these for just this reason. I knew that bastard Lucas wouldn't be able to resist mucking about with the classic movies, regardless of what he may have promised. I'm not expecting to ever be able to see the original movies in their original form again, except in my memories. It's a shame, but what can you do, Lucas is a damned psychopath with delusions of actually being able to make decent movies still.

And... Han shot first, dammit.

You know that Jimquisition awhile back about boycotts and how they are petty and no one ever sticks to them anyway? Well, I've been personally boycotting Star Wars on home video since the DVDs came out. Now it's going to be really really easy to continue this boycott to the next video format. Star Wars defined my personality from about age 2 to about age 15. To this day, I still don't own a copy on home video outside of the VHS and Betamax copies from the 90s. I haven't seen these movies in years and would like to watch them again in a more convenient higher resolution format. Guess that's never going to happen.

I realize it's mean spirited to want someone to die. I don't want anyone to die, but everyone does die eventually. Stanley Kubrick demanded home video copies of his films only be published in full frame format and his estate made sure they were released that way after his death. For awhile. Eventually, smarter, more sensible people made the decision to release the movies in widescreen format the way they were meant to be seen and the way consumers wanted to see them - against Kubrick's wishes.

Honestly, Im not suprised. I knew blu-ray Star Wars releases were too good to be true. I wonder how long it will take before the old DVD releases get discontinued or updated with this change too.

I mean, seriously, this is getting goddamned ridiculous. The original Star Wars movies weren't perfect, sure, but they were still GREAT movies. They had memorable characters, iconic scenes and a blend of fantasy and sci-fi that somehow worked.

Every time the original trilogy gets a new release, it gets "updated". First it was Greedo shooting first, the new CGI that completely looked out of place with the old footage, then photoshopping Hayden Christiansen into the end of Return of the Jedi, now...this. Why? Why does Lucas keep doing this? Every single change he's ever made to the original movies has been terrible. They've either ruined the look of the films by placing modern CGI next to old-school practical effects, or changed plot-points and/or characters around entirely.

It really saddens me that my old VHS recordings of the original trilogy don't work anymore, because that's about the only way to watch them as they originally were these days. Seriously, someone needs to find a way to remove Lucas from the copyright, revoke all ownership of George Lucas over Star Wars, and restore the ORIGINAL versions of the original trilogy. Its a shame to see such amazing movies fall so far.

This image says far more about George Lucas than any text can

...What the dick? That wasn't so much bad as it was just awkward

Hmm... I think I'll start reading the novelizations now. :/

If I were re-cutting that scene (and, let's be honest, it doesn't really need it), as Vader looks on as Luke is microwaved, I would intercut snippets from the prequels -- half-remembered pieces from Anakin's past, little pieces, nudges from Palpatine that he'd never put together before. The flashback fragments would show Vader realizing: Palpatine had set him up from the start.

He would also remember losing Padme, who (he still believes) died at his hand. Now he is confronted with losing the son he barely knew (and the daughter he never will). And so, [em]silently[/em], he turns, grabs the Emperor, and throws him down the tower shaft.
Agreed. Now this sounds like some good editing. :)
