Well when they said "No real freerome" THATS when i fell on the floor.
... Why?

Also: That's the PS3 version. The PC is the definitive version (which you've pre-ordered) and plenty of other sites have been dishing out 9s. OXM gave it a 7, but they gave Kane & Lynch 2 a 9, so...

All I know is that I've clocked 15 hours on the demo. The "negative" reviews I've read have labelled the game's linearity as a fault. Linearity is not a fault in a game that's designed to be linear.
Well, its a big open world, and unless its a game like No more Heros, you should have it be non-linear.

The horror, the horror, ive been waiting 8 years for this.

*Sigh* Even though its a mainstream reviewing site, this still made me want to fall on the ground, ive already preordered it on steam and probably cant do anything about it. Or is there a way to cancel the deal i made?
...You're panicking because it got "Decent" on IGN?

Quite frankly, that implies all kinds of unfortunate things.

I dont know, i paid 50 bucks for it, and most game reviewers say to rent it if its around a 7.

IT'S NOT FUCKING GTA. How hard is that for people to understand?

The open-world is a backdrop. That doesn't instantly mean you need to be able to run around with a rocket-launcher and do missions in whatever order you bloody well like; there's a reason why GTA IV and RDR have some of the worst narrative-pacing known to man you know.

It's a linear, story-driven game with an open-world. It is not a non-linear sandbox.

Clearly you have not been waiting for this game for 8 years, or you'd known the difference.

It's IGN. They haven't been considered trustworthy since... well since forever. Honestly, fuck reviewers. The demo was amazing, the graphics are good, the voice acting is good and the story looks to be an amazing piece of... story.

Looking at the other posts, I'm really surprised. I thought the demo made it seem like the most generic, run-of-the-mill game ever released. It just seemed so... average.

OT:
Play it for yourself before judging it, a review on any website (even this one) doesn't account for everyone's opinion on the game, it only counts for the reviewer's opinion.

Is it just me, or has IGN been slipping in the quality department? Their write-ups seem to be a little.. amateurish, and unremarkable. They don't even write within the spirit of the game they're reviewing.

"You'll be with Vito as he whacks dudes ..." Charming.

"Mafia II is an interesting mobster tale with some great voice acting and cool cutscenes ..." Cool cutscenes man.

Then they went ahead and rated Presentation and Graphics a 7.0 & 7.5, respectively. That about says it all for me. This game looks good... I'm sorry, it does. I don't know where they get off railing a 7.0 overall. You typically expect extremely mediocre games to be a 7.0. Mafia 2 is a far cry from mediocre.

He spends half his time complaining that it's not "free roam". He should of just cut to the chase and said he wants a GTA IV clone. Also, 2K Games didn't pay it's upkeep to IGN for better marks.

Let's not forget, they rated GTA IV a Perfect 10. Is there anyone on the Escapist that would even come close to considering GTA IV a perfect 10? While at the same time, many people on the Escapist have already said it deserves more than a 7. Cause for speculation here.. ? I think so.

To most all posters: Demo does not equal full game. Remember the Mirror's Edge demo everyone thought was so amazing? Then the actual game turned out to be...poor? Demo's are marketing tools first and foremost designed to show off the best and most polished section of a game to build hype. Furthermore over on Gametrailers the guys said the Demo's a very small part of the game and barely showcases any of the actual game. While this could be good or bad, based on professional reviews it seems to be suffering from Just Cause 2 syndrome.

OT: IGN's criticisms make a good bit of sense if you take out the subjective stuff. Basic 3rd Person Shooting, Basic brawler hand to hand combat, a world that advertises itself as free roaming but really isn't, and no side missions to occupy time outside of the story in a game that seems tailor made for it. However they still liked the story, and praised many parts of the game. They said it's a fun game, but one that lacks depth and could have been great rather than just good. All in all, 7.0 is still a decent score and it's probably worth checking out. I do agree with everyone else on here that you should play the game yourself to decide whether it's good or bad, but you should keep the objective criticisms in mind while you do.

Well we all know you are the diehard fan Woodsey. You know ive been waiting for this game for a while as well, and now that its out, and i know its about 10 hours long [learned it from another review], i feel regretful for not just renting it.

IGN is terrible at reviewing anyways. I'd say play the game for yourself, then decide if it sucks.

So? I've seen reviews that have marked it at a longer length and I'm sure some will peg it at a shorter length, and you're still coming from the view-point that it's a sandbox game so it should be longer.

Don't buy it then, but don't take 1 review and label the game a huge failure. Someone's already posted the link with the list of reviews; the vast majority of which are 8s and 9s. Of course, just like yourself it will instantly lose marks from some because they view it as some sort of failed GTA clone.

how does it advertise as free roam? if you wander around a city it automatically advertises free roam? hell no. i played the demo with the timer OFF and i can say that the demo is amazing. the cop ai is the most impressive i have seen. the hand to hand combat is FAR from basic. brawl near a table or car and you will see that. mafia isn't GTA and it never was. it is its own creature with its own style. everyone is comparing it to GTA and it cant be done.
What? I thought myself before i watched their review that the brawling was really basic. Hard hit, light hit, dodge, QTE next to an object.

though you have to admit, the freeroam did get tiresome very quick in the original, you had to move from mission to mission quick to avoid getting bored.

A 7 isnt terrible,

although it is a terrible review, graphics at a 7? I was running it on low on my old PC and it still looked great!

I had a ton of fun in the demo

Incidentally, a lot of the people on ign were posting that they thought the demo was not that amazing.

No doubt you will say that the only people on that site are retards and 13 year olds. Unfortunately, this is the kind of game those people like! [Sex, drugs, violence, ect.]

it may be basic to consoles but to the PC its unique. you only get button masher brawlers but NEVER taken it to the level where the environment is taken in.
Im not sure what your talking about and i have the PC version BTW. Can you explain?

Neither of the IGN reviews commented on the cops AI, and the dynamic way it's handled. They didn't mention many things actually.

I'll be honest. Anyone who thinks giving a game 7 out of 10 is the same as calling a game crappy deserves a kick in the arse. That said, if you're shocked at the lack of side quests then you've missed the point of the game.
