If you don't want to play it, don't play it. Just because other people like it, doesn't mean you're wrong if you don't. Lots of people like Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Lots of people like first person games in general. I don't. And that's okay.
If you're not enthusiastic about Oblivion, then it sounds like you're trying to force something that shouldn't be forced. Do what you're enthusiastic about. If you find that the community doesn't talk about games that you like, and it gets you down that you feel you don't have things in common with them, find another one that likes what you like, or more real life friends with similar interests.
I know the hard way that caring too much what other people think, is a precious waste of life that me and everyone needs to get over as much as we possibly can. And it sounds like you're doing exactly that. You don't like the game. But you want to because you'll be able to relate to people. That's what it sounds like.
Because you already said that you didn't like the game and it bored you. But that you're trying too hard to be open minded when neither you or I or anyone needs to force ourselves to be too open minded and like something. And yet you're asking us to make you like the game. Instead, shouldn't we just respect you if you don't like the game?
I myself am getting kind of tired of this section of the forum. There's too many topics about games I'm not particularly super enthusiastic about. I may start coming here just for the My Little Pony group. And that's fine.
Personally, what do I like doing? I don't much care for Oblivion, but I didn't pay much for it. And I like to load it up with Asian mods. You can personalize it to a great degree and if you like making your own game so to speak, Oblivion has a lot of that. But that's not for everyone. I like to use sandboxes to pretend I'm playing another world I like many times. For instance, in Oblivion I like to pretend I'm Link, if I've run out of Zelda games to play. Or I can pretend I'm playing a Tales of game a little bit. And mess around in all sorts of ways. Just collecting food can be kind of fun, doing something like that is a lot like playing Harvest Moon.
But again, that's just me. Oblivion is just a throwaway sandbox to goof around in and loosen up. It's not something I feel particularly involved in and embraced by the virtual world. But if you don't want to play it, that's fine. It's an honestly pretty overrated game. Perhaps other wRPGs are more your style. Perhaps you're more of a jRPG person like me. That's fine. Be enthusiastic about the games you like. There's no deciphering the taste of other human beings. Something you hate, will always be popular and hyped by some people.
The main, true appeal of the Elder Scrolls is exploration. It doesn't excel at any other area that I am aware. If you don't like exploration, then Elder Scrolls games are not for you. It's not more complicated than that. And don't beat yourself up over it if you don't like it.
