It's obvious why females wear make-up. Because they believe it makes them look better. The real question is does it?

Personally I think not. I prefur girls that don't feel they need make-up and to me it makes them look fake and weird. It's better just to go without, at least in most cases.

Why do you do your hair? Because you feel more comfortable because you (think you) look better. Same applies for makeup

Personally, I prefer a girl without... or just a little.

I can sort of understand why they do it. At least, covering up imperfectins makes sense, and increasing emphasising symmetry is psychologically proven to make you more attractive.

You should only use it, like clothes, to highlight some feature of yourself you're proud of. If you're using it to cover something up then your approaching it the wrong way - draw attention to what you like, don't try to hide your flaws, or you'll only feel insecure when they get exposed.

My girlfriend wears none at all, but I don't mind eye-liner on some girls. And maybe lip gloss. The rest I can do without, and not every girl suits those two.

I think people are missing the point of what I'm trying to get at.

I'm not saying they CAN'T. Geez, i'm not a make-up nazi, but i just wonder...why?

A lot of you seem to be thinking I want to ban make-up or something. No, I just want to understand why girls wear it. Oh, and to the person who asked me "Do I do my hair."

No I don't, I wash it, that's it, from there, it does it's own thing. XD

Even more reason for God to just cull off the human race.

A little bit of makeup is fine but a lot can just be annoying and can be annoying to look at. Makeup can make a huge difference, but so can Photoshop!

Anyone who says women are just as good looking without makeup obviously does not live with 4 of them.

The vast majority of women are sheep, if they see it as popular on TV/cinema then they must have it. If their friends do it, they will do it too. Anything for acceptance.

Like vain little magpies craving anything they see that is shiny... or in this case glossy. Its all to bolster their failing sense of self worth. To paint themselves as somone worth being instead of their dull reality, over weight, spotty, etc.

I have more respect women who resist all that. Theres no need for makeup in order to go to school or the shops etc.

My partner doesn't wear it and she doesn't need to. She's a lot better off without it.

when done correctly, make-up can do wonders.

If you seriously don't believe me, look at any movie - all the actors are made up - they don't actually look like that, men and women. Every famous woman who's famous for her face, owes that fame largely to make-up.

I'm not saying that a natural look is ugly - I happen to love my girlfriend's natural face (you'd have to, otherwise you'd hate yourself every day), but a simple bit of make-up can accentuate strong areas, and draw attention away from weaker areas.

You're right about one thing though - you only notice it when it's done wrong.. that's sort of the point. The point is to make a woman (or man), look like they naturally look the way you want them to be.. If you fail in that illusion, then people will see the make-up. If you succeed, then the person will look like a natural person, only better.

Make-up can make skin look more even, more constant than it really is.
Such skin would be a sign for health and males look for healthy females to mate with.
Basically, you make yourself look more healthy and therefore more desirable.
As always, it's about sex.

I sometimes wear makeup (as in eyeliner and mascara) when I'm in the mood, and I use an excessively light amount of concealer for days when my skin is behaving poorly. That's pretty much the farthest extent I'll go to; I refuse to douse my skin in foundation, powder, or any other torturous substance on the market because excessive makeup feels disgusting and is hard to remove.

Whilst I've heard the 'if it's applied correctly then they look nicer' argument a million times and for the love of science I still don't see the fascination... even when looking out for it. I think it's the over-dependence that annoys me the most.

I live with a girl who is very very self conscious and no matter what myself or my other all male housemates say she still insists upon it constantly. We live opposite two corner shops and a fish and chip shop and she insists upon putting on makeup just for the 2 minutes that we'll be at any of the three places.

The funny thing is that I look at her sans makeup and then with makeup and I honestly don't know the difference. She's always on about her imperfect face, her blemishes and all of the other crap that 99% of teen/20somethings come out with and I just laugh because she doesn't have any of the problems that she says, I tell her this and she doesn't believe me. Hell, I even tell her that my face is a lot worse (acne + minor scarring as well as several dents from injuries as I've been growing up) but she doesn't believe me. I think she might have maybe... one spot on her face.

I thought I was the only one. It has always baffled me as to why make-up is worn. I generally think girls without make-up are more attractive.

Does it? Really?

I don't really see how putting on a false-face makes you better. That's putting it bluntly. A bit of eye-liner/mascara I can handle, but what puzzles me is when people use foundation and such. My friends called Make-up 'Face-lies', for obvious reasons. I just don't understand the concept.
it does make some girls look better. but only if it is subtle, just that many girls take it way over the top and look like clowns. orange clowns. its much the same as styling your hair or choosing clothes that make you look better. like girls wear clothes that accentuate their figure, or make them look slimmer. would you consider that a "false-body" if they wear clothes that make them look slimmer ( and i mean slimming colours)? because that's fairly similar idea.
that said my best girl friend doesn't wear make-up, but she is very pretty without it. some make-up is fine, but people go to extreme with it sometimes. and it does make them feel better, and you can't say it doesn't, unless you can collectively read the minds of all girls who wear make up. they feel it makes them look prettier, and therefore they think other people will see them as looking prettier.

Yes I am fully aware there is probably a little photoshop added as well but well. A relative of mine is a "model" and trust me. Before and after make up is a huge freaking deal.
Most of these girls look good without make-up. That's the sad part, as a society our vision of beauty is distorted because of make-up and photoshop etc.

Personally, I've never liked make-up and never wore it growing up. Of course, my mom's ultimatum when it came to make-up was "You can have make-up, or you can have zit medication". I choose the medication.

I have a complete total of 4 make-up products; foundation (though it's really just tinted moisturizer), zit spot concealer, blush (I think it's blush, I don't actually use it on my cheeks), and light lipstick.

There's pretty much only one reason I ever put any of these on; when it's important to make a good first impression, a.k.a the job interview. When more than half of the job ads I see read "professional appearance" as a requirement, that pretty much means well-dressed and make-up. Not clown-face make-up, mind you(unless you're applying to be a stripper or a porn star). And sometimes, it really does make my face look better. I'm in my twenties and still suffer from acne on occasion, and have eczyme on the bridge of my nose, around my eyes, and spots on the top, bottom and sides of my mouth. It's been a lot better as of late, but some days it flares up and I have a lot of red places on my face. Foundation covers that and makes my skin look, you know, like normal skin as opposed to skin that looks like I've been rubbing a brillo pad on sections of it. The blush or whatever goes around my eyes (little bit goes a long way). I rarely bother with the lipstick; I try to use it since my sister paid for this things and I don't want the money to go to waste.

But yeah, unless it's for a job or some other important occasion (like a wedding or something where I need to dress up), I don't bother with make-up. Mostly a hassle.

I'm afraid the most common reason is because it makes one feel better. That's actually a perfectly logical reason if you think about it. Just as those above have said, it's no different to wearing a particuar style of clothing (I mean, come on, lowriding has *never* been attractive, and yet people still intentionally wear their jeans around their knees like they've soiled themselves) or doing your hair a particular way. Yes, I realise you say that you let your hair do as it will, and if that's the way you're comfortable, then great. For some people, makeup is the way they feel comfortable.

I'll admit, I don't wear any makeup at all on a daily basis, and I hate foundation with a passion, but if I'm going out for a party I might wear a bit of lipstick and eyeshadow - it's more part of the outfit than anything else, and quite frankly, we dress up as much for ourselves as we do for any nearby males, if not more.

And let's be honest here, if you have the combination of a hideous zit and a special occasion at which there will be photos, then a little concealer on the affected area is a wonderful thing... =)
