At 13 she knew what she was doing, people need to stop thinking that teens don't know what the hell they are doing. Yes its bad that the guy took advantage of her, but who's to say she didn't use the guy to get cool stuff. She got a phone from him, and the only reason it caught on was because the mother (whom works 3 jobs) found out she had a phone.

So chances are the girl used the guy to get stuff because she don't get much as her mom works 3 jobs and probably makes barely enough to support herself and her kid. Since there was no mention of a father and the fact she is working 3 jobs means that the girl is most likely from a broken home(meaning its not all lollipop's and rainbows).

But the way things are in todays society the dude will have one of two things happen, either made an example of (most likely) or get like 10 years probation. As for the girl, I believe she knew what she was doing, she got stuff from him and in return he got sex.
I have to agree with this poster. She knew what was going on and consented. Was it stupid of the guy? Yeah. But he isn't a rapist in my book.
Seconded. Because sometimes laws need to be changed or reworded for situations like this.

So it´s not true: not all 14 year old girls on the internet are FBI Agents.

I never thought that.
Tell that to virtually everyone on any given *chan and they'll freak. :p

It sounds like she gave her consent, so would it still be considered sexual assault? And why is a 54 year old playing Runescape?
Because of outdated and poorly written laws.

So...who wants to make bets about how long he'll last in prison? XD
Fifty bucks says two days. One day to get settled in, another for the rest of the inmates to find out what he did and then shank him.
That or he meets people that sympathize with him(because she was 13, someone will agree with him and have his back) and he'll get a month if lucky.

Unless it was forced, I don't see a problem.
This. Just... this. I don't see how this is an issue at all.

Now...

OT: Umm... I call BS and say it was consensual and she knew what the hell she was doing. Not even worthy of a fine in my opinion.

[sub]Though, I am somewhat biased on this subject so you can feel free to take my statements with a grain of salt.[/sub]

GAH! THE MENTAL IMAGE! ICK!

Anyways, this confuses me. Did he somehow think he'd actually pull that off?
You can't talk about pulling things off after the e-peen thing.. makes me have a bad mental image :(

OP: My god, seriously? I know we don't have it too bad here but I imagine that now games will be pinned on creeps like this guy over in America, how did he think he could get away with it?

Lol I married people in RuneScape too.

I was 13 though. The girls made me buy them armor and diamond rings too. Waste of my precious GPs.
Yar, I did so once. Then she put me on her ignore list and never spoke to me again. *****. Then I got smarter and stayed away from anyone trying to make me give them anything with a value of 1k or more.

By the way Runescape is still good. They just brought back free trade and old wilderness. I've started playing again. My only problem with Runescape is that it takes away from my Minecraft time. I'm left between two vices. A good, cheap MMORPG or the purest form of sandbox known to man. It's a conundrum (for me at least).

Getting married ingame is dumb.
As a player of Runescape, I saw what some people went through being married in-game.
"Honey, buy me a Bandos set!" "Honey, I need a godsword." "Honey, can you give me the cash to get a magic skillcape?"

Also, it's rarely the guy character who asks the girl character for shit.
Obvious exploitation is obvious.
so its like real life then?

more on topic.. WTF!

I seem to remember reading that Jagex had a rule against ingame relationships. Obviously it is just one of those rules to protect themselves from lawsuits for just such an occasion as this, but still.
Ah well. I still enjoy the game for some strange reason, but that's probably because I am a casual mmorpg player and can't afford any of the more expensive games (woot being college poor). Plus I met my best friend because of RS, so it has a special place for me.

Fox news is wrong. Bulletstorm does not make you a rapist. Runescape does.

Exactly what I was thinking. Okay, maybe not exactly but the first part is. I don't see why a thirteen year old can't have the brainpower to understand what sex is and knowingly consent to it. I mean, she's most likely watched porn quite a few times(name one thirteen year old who hasn't) and knows what sex is and probably knows the joys of it(well, now she does). But seriously, they had sex 3 times. This means that either she was raped thrice and no one noticed, or she consented to it. I'm guessing she said "yes" to his sex. Doesn't matter what he looks like, hormones are going crazy at that age. Now, if she regrets it and will have psychological damage for the rest of her life, then sure, he can be charged. But if she consented and doesn't regret having her friends worship her for having sex[CITATION NEEDED] then I don't see the problem other than the parents didn't monitor their child.
Yeah, I'm of this opinion too. She met him up with him, at least, on three separate occasions (I assume more, since I don't think it's likely they fucked every time). I'm pretty sure she knows how easy it is to get people charged with that kind of thing. If she wanted it to stop she could have gone to the police, or even just stopped talking to him.

It also annoys me that simply because she'd lived for 5 years longer (pretty sure that's the age of majority in the USA), she automatically becomes sensible enough to choose to fuck with a 54 year old. I get pissed that people think you can draw a line that easily.

I bet when they were doing it she was imagining his RS character, it was probably better looking. But seriously most of the people on the non paying worlds will constantly look desperate by typing like crazy "Looking for BF/GF press 123!!!" Kind of sad really.

Eh, man in the sense he went cross country for a girl he loves but what he did was illegal.
But, laws change for a reason. (O_O)

When I originally read a user's post copypasta'd from the Fox News article, I thought he was just very skilfully trolling us. Then I saw the legit article on the Fox News website...

Damn.

But, yeah. Runescape: making people commit crimes since... forever. :p

I don't believe a word of this. Someone over 16 playing Runescape?
It's not uncommon, most people focus on the younger group for the game but there are people that are still there from the beginning or fairly early.

You have summed up a fair amount of my argument in less than 30 paragraphs. I give you the Lifetime Achievement Award For Making What I Say Take Up Less Bandwidth. Congratulations.

But... really, age doesn't really gauge one's mental abilities. For example, the college students I meet playing Call of Duty: Black Ops have the maturity of an embryo. While the 7 year old girl split-screening with me speaks like a fully grown woman. Also, has the mouth of a sailor. XD

Nah, she's 13. All fourteen year old girls on the net ARE FBI Agents, but every other number from 11-13, and 15-17 is safe! Just kidding. :)

As for the thread, she knew what she was doing. I know a lot of female friends that had sex before thirteen and knew what they were doing and don't regret it. Do I agree with his actions? Hell no! But rape is a long shot, maybe sexual misconduct or whatever sexual laws there are that fit this area more appropriately. I don't know, I'm not a lawyer!

PS: I'm glad there's Chris Hanson images on this thread, I was have been seriously disappointed if there wasn't!

Okay, I understand developing a relationship with someone over the Internet. I understand marrying them in-game. I also understand going to meet them in person and buying them a cell phone. But didn't he stop and think, wait a minute, this girl looks like she's under 16 (Michigan's age of consent) before sticking his cock in her!?
