A time's like this i feel the world should have an irony parade, so that when things like this happen they just set up camp around that area.
It would take a lot of organizing, but i beleive it would be worth it.
Anyway, this is terrible, but also brilliant at the same time, it seriously brings home a rather sharp, albeit gravelly point home.
(to wear helmets, if you're a bit slow)

I fail to see the problem here. The man chose not to wear a helmet, and as a result he died. Tragic, yes. But it was his choice, which is what he advocated.

Not wearing a helmet is not a crime, as there is no victim. If you go flying off a motorcycle at 50+ mile per hour, you're pretty much dead either way. The only difference is that instead of scraping chunks of your brain off the pavement, they'll have to scoop them out of your helmet. Plus, if you go flying and kill someone else, a helmet would not prevent that death. So, the only person a helmet protects is the person wearing it. The government has no business protecting you from yourself, thus the law is bad. (If you want to hurt yourself in a way that doesn't hurt others, be my guest.)

(I personally find the seatbelt arguments very flimsy as well, but at least those have some arguments in favour. In rare cases, your body can become a high speed projectile and hit someone. Most of the time, the only difference is that you need to be scraped off the pavement instead of out of a car, but I'll concede that sometimes you might hit someone.)

Um, irony?

I feel sorry for the guy. Seriously, that would be the one of the worst ways to go. But obviously this is the perfect reason for manditory helmets :(
I agree, this is irony, however I don't feel sorry for him. "Hey, screw you government! I don't want to get your idiotic laws pushed on me! I ride freestyle!" The whole thing in itself is stupid, and in his protest he proved why he should not protest. Maybe he'll even get a Darwin Award for this.

I'm not one to say this quickly, but this death was well earned.
Bullcrap to the people claiming you're only endangering yourself. We live in a socioty here, we are depended one on other. Someone is going to have to pay for the doctors trying to fix the guy up. And besides that he is taking an unnecesarry place in the hospital, those have limited spaces.
Besides from that people are open/weak to suggestion. If they see a man riding without a helment, they are encouraged to do the same. Monkey see Monkey do, and let's face it we're all still monkeys here. (Granted we don't have a tail, so we would be apes)

I feel sorry for everyone involved, but come on, who didn't see that one coming?

Without a helmet, even a minor motorbike accident can become life-threatening, and I can guaruntee that almost everyone who rides a motorbike has had at least one accident, of any severity.

I am not a man of religion.

I do not believe in any sort of Christian, Muslim or Greek God(s) and I have never prayed.

However, I know and understand the great and powerful will of the Irony Gods, and this is simply more proof of their infinite abilities.

This. Is. Hilarious.

This is just too ironic for me to feel sorry for the guy. If you want to ride on something as dangerous as a motorcycle, and DON'T protect your head, I don't care who you are, you're being a moron and don't get any sympathy from me.

Yeah, I dont see any proof that having a helmet on would have saved his life.
Well, it's a ten-sentence article. They're not exactly presenting data for public inspection. And the idea that a helmet could save a person from a head injury is fairly believable, so I'm willing to take the trooper's word for it. He probably saw more of it than I did.

He's a fucking idiot. I'm sorry but, if you ride a motorcycle, or any other 2-4 wheeled vehicle, and are not wearing a helmet and you fall, I don't feel sorry for you because I believe you are a total imbecile.
I second that.

Hahaha; you wear a helmet while driving a car. How often do you fall out of your car to warrant that?

So... the group ABATE does promote voluntary helmet use, but opposes enforcement by law? Is there some kind of stigma attached to wearing one because you *have* to, as opposed to doing it because you freely choose to not be an idiot?
Would they be seeking to improve the image of bikers from the usual clichéd danger-baiting moron to conscientious safe, responsible folk who freely choose to enforce safety upon themselves?

If so, well done guys. This protest really backfired. Motorcyclists as a whole don't need this kind of bad press.

This, this and this. It's sad, a little, sure. However, I sense a Darwin award has been assigned to this guy. If you're protesting helmet-mandatoriness, drive carefully or WALK. This is like that guy from Jackass who died whilst drunk driving. I'm not going to say "DESERVED IT", but what, am I supposed to care? They both died doing stupid shit.

To everyone who has stated that seatbelts/helmets should be an individuals desicion I say nay. Firstly most western nations have socialised healthcare and the US is heading that way as well so you are socially obligated to decrease the cost of potential injuries to yourself. Secondly no seatbelt + high speed collision usually = human sized glass coated ballistic projectile. The idea that someone else couldn't be hurt by a passenger that has been ejected at high speeds from their vehicle is seriously erroneous.

(I work in a hospital in the UK and hve experience in the hospital's mortuary as well)

Yeah yeah I know, I meant to restate it, someone else already got me on that. What I meant to say was an OPEN vehicle, like a motorcyle or an ATV. Im changing it right now.
A convertible?

Oh and damn, I wasn't first in pointing that out. Smart-assery, away! Woooosssh

I support his cause, but you don't need to smoke cannabis to protest against its prohibition. His action was stupid regardless of surrounding laws. At least with a helmet only the person making the stupid choice pays for it.

He's an idiot, no doubt, but that's really not the kind of thing we should be making laws about. If someone wants to kill themselves, let them do so without spending money (we don't have) trying to stop them.
I hate to say it but I was thinking the same thing just now.

Ah yes, "irony". We have dismissed that claim.

Riding any vehicle without proper protection is stupid. Just recently here, a singer and 3 other people were in a car crash, only one was wearing a seatbelt. One of the other died right away, the singer dies in the hospital a few days later and another one also went to the hospital with serious injuries. Oh, and they were in a borrowed car with no insurance. The result? A horde of fans piling up around the hospital, leaving messages at the entrance, singing and saying "it was a great injustice".

NO IT WAS NOT A GREAT INJUSTICE! He was breaking TWO laws at once and one of those laws could have saved his life. I'm not happy the guy died, but his attitude was just idiotic and in this case it's exactly the same.

And no, the people who are in danger aren't only the ones who don't use protection. If you get thrown against the front seat, you can injure the person in front of you. What about if you have a family that depends on you, uh? What about the people who have to spend time scraping you off the pavement, doing an autopsy, etc, etc, because you don't want to make your head hold a little wight? And even if you don't hurt anyone else, I am of the opinion that those who ignore laws meant first to protect them should be treated like suicidals and given no second thought.
