For those who are talking about how messed up this is, my immediate guess would be that there is a perfectly sane and rational explanation involved. That explanation is gambling. People will gamble over video games, and people making wagers over fighting games and the like is not all that uncommon. I'm not sure how such things would be done with Madden, but I'd immediatly guess the guy was caught cheating during a paticularly "hot" moment when there was a decent amount of money (for the people involved) riding on it. People get shot, knifed, beaten, and even tortured to death over gambling, and for some rather insignifigant amounts of money. If the guy was killed over a game of poker or Mah Jong or whatever nobody would even bat an eye.
A few hundred dollars on the line, plus this guy being a regular big winner when they place friendly wagers, combined with the discovery that he had a way of cheating which could have applied to any number of previous wagers... yeah, that could get ugly really fast.
