It used to be a bit funny to watch people get in a twist about it, but now it is just seeming so damn prevalent that it is actually getting annoying, end of the day, PC isn't bringing in the money it used to, consoles are a sure bet, and a comparatively small portion of the console crowd gets in peoples face about things.
On topic, I am liking the sound of this a hell of a lot, sounds like gears of war crossed with ME 1 with more customisation, + some small TF2 bits + punching other people than khalisa al jilani
I like a lot, I just hope that they do bring back more of the old school elements of ME 1, but not enough to please the hardcore RPG fans, even if it is like 1 feature short of EXACTLY to their specifications, because part of the fun of this site is watching PC elitists, RPG purists and modern fps franchise haters get completely bent out of shape!

Yeah, I'm definitely not one of the people saying that. I know what you're referring to, though. Personally, I like that they're crossing genres. To me, RPG is not a game mechanic. "Menu fighter" (like Final Fantasy games) is a game mechanic. RPG is a storytelling choice. Do you make a game where a scripted story unfolds for the player or do you give the player the opportunity to put himself in the shoes of the protagonist and make choices? Indeed. And the RPG checklist is largely just convention. It's a nebulously defined genre. There's no particular reason why RPGs should have the game mechanics people think they should have other than the fact that past RPGs have had those mechanics.I guess this is the result of quantifying what it means to be an RPG and then comparing the game to that criteria, rather than judging how a game works within its own established systems (i.e. going down an RPG Checklist instead of looking at ME on its own and considering what works, what doesn't, etc.).
It is. And there's a place for Diablo-esque loot oriented games. But I don't only like traditional RPGs. I quite like action-oriented shooters, too, and the idea of an action-oriented shooter that seamlessly integrates the essence of an RPG appeals to me. Dragon Age II strikes me a bit as an attempt to mix the action game and RPG genres. I like that idea as well, even if maybe the execution could use some refinement. The point is that mixing RPG elements into other genres is a very worthwhile endeavor. People complain that Bioware is getting away from making their traditional complex and deep RPGs, but no one else is doing what they're doing now. If they stop doing it, where will you find a game that integrates the solid gameplay of a taut triple-A action title like Gears of War with the customization and choice of an RPG? The next Deus Ex, perhaps? We'll see, I suppose.For example, I don't consider a simplified system of weapon upgrades to be "dumber" in the pejorative sense, nor do I think that about companion-specific armor and upgrades. I find the whole "find random stuff and put it on your party members" thing to be great for some games, but the idea that it need apply to every game is a bit narrow-minded.
You also missed the part when they said, in a previous thread that ME3 would have more RPG elements than ME2.
