Or you know, a prequel. For example a game set between Mass Effect 1 and 2 when Shepard was considered dead. They could make a thousand games set in a period of 2-3 years before or during Mass Effect 1 or 2 if they wanted to. It's an enormous galaxy and we've only seen a small fraction of it. I wanted more of that universe. Not a fuckin' new one that abandons everything.
Personally, I think a prequel/interquel would be pretty pointless. No matter what happens you know it's all leading up to the same bs color-coded ending. And there's no way a direct sequel could work without massively retconning said ending.

Starting fresh is certainly a risk, but putting as much distance between the new game and that travesty of an ending we got from ME3 isn't just the best choice--it's the only viable choice as far as I'm concerned.

So a CGI trailer, pretty much what I expected (not that I'm complaining. Frankly, that's the best we were going to get.). But...a bit too short, especially when the later half of the trailer seems to just be cutting to different scenes a bunch of times. Really wish it was longer, especially compared to how other stuff during the conference seemed to drag on a bit.

But the armor looks super sleek, I love it. Hate that its not coming out for a super long time, but I'll just have to deal with it. Can't wait for more info

Did you ever play the ME3 multiplayer? That is precisely what half of the playerbase did so that cinematic is authentic as hell. Locked in Vanguard and charged whatever the fuck was in their way regardless of threat level, it was not uncommon to see people try to melee fight a Banshee. Y'know the enemy that has a one hit kill move if you get into melee range of it? Some people I swear...
Multiplayer is not an accurate portrayal of in universe combat logic and tactics, it's an abstract thing designed to be engaging and fun(hell, some of the stuff in SP falls into that too), it's completely removed from making any sort of sense. Representing the "playerbase" is stupid when you are showing off a story teaser. I mean, just think about what you wrote, it makes sense to portray a story teaser in a really dumb "dur, upic ruzshdonw" way because because people are playing an arena combat multiplayer mode like that? Please.
It was a joke... How could you read that and not notice that I was joking... Oh yeah, no my fault sorry. Bioware threads on 'Scapist. I forgot how humourless and totally srs bsns they always end up being, my bad. Sorry for trying to lighten the mood.

If the game is set after ME3 then they kind of have two choice in my mind. If you picked synthesis then all Milky way races are going to need to be glowing green.

What I find far more likely to happen is this. People worked out a way to rig a Mass Rely to transport them to Andromeda, kind of like a life-boat, in case the Reapers couldn't be defeated. The relay is then destroyed as the last ship passes through. This would preserve the races and give them a chance at one day returning home.

The 'life-boats' of course would have left before the Crucible was finished and fired. That way Bioware can mention Shepard and the events that led to Mass Effect: Andromeda without having to reference the endings of the third game.

So Mass Effect gets a fresh start and nothing about the previous trilogy is changed or made canon.

Edit: somehow missed that 088Zulu posted something similar.

My biggest concern isn't the fresh setting or the Mako or anything like that, it's where the hell could they possibly go after ME3? I mean, the last game had Robotic Space Cthulhu's not only threatening the entire galaxy but kicking it's collective asses so bad they needed a literal Deus Ex Machina to be able to beat them. How could they possibly top that? I'm pretty sure it's going to be really tough for them to make us care about the struggles of the new protagonists without a threat that at least matches the Reapers.

I'm not surprised we're limited to humans, it's just too convenient from Bioware's point of view to stick with one race and also using the one race that can go pretty much anywhere and do pretty much anything without any real handwaving and retconning needed. I'm also not surprised that it's taking place in a new galaxy and years afterward. I figured they would do something like this, it's the only real way they could continue the series after the clusterf*** of an ending Mass Effect 3 had. Besides, we've already explored most all of the Milky Way galaxy 3 times already so I don't have a problem with them literally forging new frontiers and going to places we haven't already been and explore new worlds and new civilizations. To boldly go where no man... wait, wrong franchise.

On one hand I think the direction they are taking is great in terms of scenario. Having exploration as the focus does make a lot of sense in terms of what it can offer, and whereas Dragon Age:Inquisition failed miserably at being a D&D game/Tactical RPG, that aspect is irrelevant with ME, so they're off to a good start.

That said, I am worried about it being a Skyrim or even DA:I in terms of bland filler. Before CD Projekt Red, Bioware were once the masters of story driven wonder. The world's they created FELT immense, regardless of size. The FELT deep and wonderful. Then they reach this bizare junction of ME3 "nothingness", and DA:I "Too much but nothing worth anything-ness"

Am I hyped? No. I've been hyped for Bioware's last 4 outings and I'm still waiting for anything to wow me half as much as Dragon Age:Origins or Mass Effect 1 did.

However I am interested. Which after the disaster that was ME3 (forget the ending, I just hated the game) it's saying a lot.

Make that choice of direction count please Bioware. I want to give you my hard earned money, but it has to be worth it.

Here's hoping for a return to form from the previous RPG heavyweights. DON'T make this COD meets Skyrim PLEASE.

All Bioware devs working on this, repeat this mantra 500 times before you sleep or meditate every day........

"ME Andromeda is an RPG"

"ME Andromeda is an RPG"

"ME Andromeda is an RPG"

"ME Andromeda is an RPG"

"ME Andromeda is an RPG"

"ME Andromeda is an RPG"

"ME Andromeda is an RPG"

"ME Andromeda is an RPG"

Eugh as someone who doesn't like westerns (no offense to those who do) this trailer rubbed me the wrong way from the very first second. When I think mass effect, i think space opera and jack wall music , none of this old west or frontier crap even when exploring worlds was part of the mass effect gameplay in ME1.

So it's set long, long, LONG after the events of the mass effect trilogy...In a completely new galaxy where the ending choices of the previous game wouldn't reach...

And then you see the n7 logo. Wtf. You can either distance yourself from the previous trilogy or you don't, but don't go wishy washy and do things half way.

Considering how much I adore Mass Effect, i'm surprised to say my hype meter for this is negative. Nothing I saw represented the elements of mass effect I liked and what elements were in the trailer didn't appeal to me. I also won't lose my shit just because "omg it's the n7 logo!!!!!

The music and the trailer in general made me feel it could be a "exploring new frontiers" kinda game, which could be nice.
There was a rumour that you are in a whole new galaxy so we dont have the issue of those last 3 games and choices. New galaxy, new planets an hopefully new races with a new enemy. :)
