I swear I'm one of maybe 10 people on the planet who actually enjoy(ed) that film. I actually still own it. Yes it is cliched, no there is no FF magic. But darn it, its fun and I like it.
Make that 11. I felt a little sad inside when the comic relief pilot dude died. :(
Make that 12, I enjoyed it. Course I think its major problem like what as probably already been said was calling it Final Fantasy. The film had nothing to do with Final Fantasy, while I know most Final Fantasy games are set in different worlds with (plot wise)zero connection to one another. They do all have various traits connecting one another like the magic, monsters and feel... I guess its hard to express what makes a Final Fantasy game feel like a Final Fantasy game outside referencing the combat system.

However I'm sure a good amount of members here will see where I'm coming from, Final Fantasy has a distinct feel and look to it. This film had none of that out side maybe one or two references.

So the back lash from the fans was inevitable. However judged outside of the connection with the video games, its an alright movie, not the best but I enjoyed it. Certainly looked good and was a large step for animation. Though as one user quite correctly mentioned, it was really a head of its time, I imagine if it was released at around this time (with a different title) it would have faired much better.

Is that where all the blue lense flare comes from too?

It ain't Mass Effect without the lense flare.

I thought the movie was pretty good. The biggest flaw was calling it Final Fantasy. That set up all kinds of unfathomable hype.

Probably why it flopped so badly.
It wouldn't surprise me then if J. J. Abrams directed the Mass Effect movie. He loves his lens flares.

you know, for a second there I was REALLY confused, then I saw what movie you're talking about, and that it's just visually, and I'm okay with that. Mass Effect will always be Star Trek The Game, in my heart atleast.

I loved Spirits Within. I think it really balanced keeping with the spirit(heh) of the game series without pandering too much to the fanbois.

It might have been a flop but it was a pioneering use of CG completely unprecedented when it was released. It was the first digital movie meant to show realistic people as opposed to "cartoon" characters like Pixar.

The blooper reel at the end is absolutely hilarious as is the thriller dance scene.

Seriously though, the bit where they get into a car crash, everyone eventually raises their heads and asks "Is everyone ok?" all the while everyone has like pipes going through their heads.

At least Mass Effect isn't taking cues from Van Damme's Street Fighter.
Why not? Saren could have used some of Bison's amazing lines:

P.S: You played almost as much LoL as I did this weekend. Feeling as dirty about it as I do? XP

P.P.S: No, I don't see if you're on when I log on.

P.P.P.S: Please don't file a restraining order.

*flips through his copy of The Art of Mass Effect*

... huh, I'm surprised that I haven't heard anyone say this earlier.

And somehow Mass Effect still turned out good.

Huh. Just goes to show...

That's because they stole the story premise from somewhere else. :p

How did I not notice that? I've seen and enjoyed 'Spirits Within enough times, and it's bloody obvious now it's been pointed out..

'Glad they did, though.

Also, Ickorus, your avatar made me think there was a bug on my screen >.>;

I can see the influence, especially in the HUD.

Luckily, they didn't take many cues in the writing department.

Ya, I know. That book, the name of which escapes me. Also, just about every space sci-fi ever.

However, I was referring to the visual design. As was the article, unless I'm much mistaken.

I actually thought this. I'd only seen bits and pieces of the movie, but I guess I was lucky enough to see the right bits

I know! I was just trying to be a smartass. :p

PS the name of the book is Revelation Space, it's actually a series. Well worth reading!

I actually really liked the Final Fantasy movie.

I can definitely see the similarities in both Spirits Within and ME.

I will say though that Mass Effect is 10000000000000000000000000000000x better than the movie
