I swear I'm one of maybe 10 people on the planet who actually enjoy(ed) that film. I actually still own it. Yes it is cliched, no there is no FF magic. But darn it, its fun and I like it.
I do hope that there are more then ten of us.
The elements of "Final Fantasy" in the movie where quite hard to distinguish, but you could recognize several staples of the series if you looked for them.
I loved it back in the day, and still defend it against the usual "it was just a bad movie" slander.
Between the bouts of action, I remember it as a very subtle and soft spoken piece, which wasn't what people where hoping for when they got hyped up.Weither you liked it or not comes down to taste, sadly it didn't appeal to a mass audience enough to make up for the gigantic production costs.
On the technical side of things, they easily floored their competition. No other studio could produce CGI of that quality at that time. Weta's Work on the first Lotr came pretty close - but the shots with 100% CGI in them still don't reach the fidelity and compositional quality of The Spirits Within.
Just compare it with The Phantom Menace - and you'll see how much better their character animation and rendering was.
