Ummmmm no, I mean Will Smith is a fantastic actor and all, but I just can't see him as the man in tights. Plus the Wachowskis annoy the hell out of me. Also Hood? Cthuluhu kill me now.

It'll at least be more believable than tubby middle aged Russel Crowe playing a "young" Robin Hood.

Goddamn, that pissed me off...

"They've reportedly approached Will Smith, who infamously passed when they offered him the role of Neo in The Matrix. Yes, that happened. "
I actually didn't know this.

"Welcome to the real world Neo."
"AAAWWW HELLLL NO!"
I'm pretty sure it's the other way around. Smith wanted to be in the movie, and he wasn't able to pull off a convincing Neo. I remember reading about it when his wife Jada-Pinkett Smith was cast as Niobe.
EDIT: It seems wherever i read that was wrong.
"Actor Will Smith turned down the role of Neo to make Wild Wild West, due to skepticism over the film's ambitious bullet time special effects." -Wiki

So it will be a black man in the city with poor people (read: ghetto) stealing money in a film called "Hood". Are these guys TRYING to have BS claims of racism hurled at them?

Serious: Meh. Don't care.

It's a good thing none of the people commenting above me are in any way connected to the movie business (at least on a level that produces material anyone else than their close family enjoys). A modern take on Robin Hood is not only rich with potential, but the casting of Smith - who, regardless of the useless hate that mostly young men harbor against him, is a talented and academy award nominated actor who's proven that he can handle pretty much all the roles that have been thrown at him.

I for one am intrigued for the moment.
I just can't see how it has any potential at all. Explain

Sheriff white guy of Nottingham Inc. starts taking parts of the Sherwood Forest Estates (euphamism for "Low-Income Housing" which is a euphamism for "the Hood", which is a euphamism for "that part of town you avoid for good reason") and is turning it into his own playground. Rob N. Hood must then steal the stuff and fight the evil to protect the hood from the evil busniess empire's Board of Director's head John who is contorlling things while CEO Richard Lionheart is away on a business trip. Saving his woman-friend, a maid named Mary-Ann, who John hired to clean his house but is now trying to take advantage of. He finds help from Little John, who could be played by Shaq. It ends with an epic knife/baseball bat/fist fight between the Sheriff and Rob, possibly after a huge shootout and/or epic car chase which likely has a large bodycount of Notthingham Inc. "elite" security guards who for some reason were sent to the Stormtrooper Acadamy of Aiming while the heroes have between a 75 and 90% hit rate with their bullets. Little John dying in the epic final fight is optional but suggested to increase the drama and make it seem like Rob is in serious danger. In the end, Sherwood Forest Estates is saved and CEO Richard makes a formal apology and gives everyone in the hood free bling to make up for it.

If I am at all right on this, Hollywood is indeed screwed up beyond repair. Especially considering how hard I tried to make the story full of racist stereotypes.
I might save this and pitch it to the Wyan's Bros. I bet they'd make it for sure and it would be funny (because it is the Wayans bros and because they can get away with the racist stereotyping because they are black).

Wait didn't Robin Hood have a black companion or something. Casting the main guy as black makes this ridiculously stupid.

Still will smith is good at what he does, maybe they will cake him in flour before shooting the scene.
I wasn't aware any character based on Robin Hood had to be white. For that matter, I wasn't aware the 'actual' Robin Hood had to be. Why is that?

Yes, he had a black companion... in an updated retelling of the story.

Well, as long as this is something that is not placed in the era. I think I can be comfortable with that. If it is something that is modern, and not placed in the medivevil times then it might not be too bad. As long as it only carries the spirit of Robin Hood and nothing else. However, I hope it doesn't encourage theft from well meaning people. I hope it does not justify theft in any way. I also hope it doesn't show that white people are the only ones who are rich, and thus should be stolen from. I guess we have to wait and see.

I really have no problem with the idea of an African American Robin Hood.

The movie, overall, has the potential to be either really good, or eye-gougingly terrible.

If by "updated retelling" you mean Men in Tights, yes, he did.
Men in Tights was a direct parody of Prince of Thieves.
And much like all of Robin's non-Merry Men sidekicks, he was just kinda pulled out of nowhere for more diversity. Then again, Friar Tuck and Maid Marian were brought in the same way.

This is about the dumbest thing I think I've ever heard of out of hollywood. Although I like both parties involved the idea is just lame beyond description.
