well i've never listened to power metal but they say that they are SID-metal... i have no clue what it means

SID - Sound Interface Device. The Commodore-64's sound chip. While horribly outdated now, it was one of the crowning features of the 64's capabilities back in the day of the TI-99/Commodore/Atari 400 wars. Some of my favorite tunes were composed on this 8-bit synthesizer.

There's two bands I'll add. Manowar during their sellout years, because they did a lot of mythologically-based songs during that time, you could always get a discography somewhere and preview the songs on YouTube. Van Canto might be another band worth previewing because they also do some medieval-themed stuff, but they're essentially an acapella metal band with a drummer, more well known for their covers than their original material.

Aside from that, I'd agree that Nightwish and Iron Maiden also have some good medieval themed stuff.

I was late to the party. Was the first thing that came to mind when someone said "Medieval-themed metal"


EDITragonforce is also a good one, even if they can't play their own stuff live.

I'm going to recommend Gojira. Because they're one of my favourite metal bands going right now. I have no idea what genre they fit into though.


I guess if you're looking for medieval type stuff you could try some Amon Amarth.

SID Metal is not a genre, as they'd pretty much be the only band that would play it. SID refers to the Commodore 64 sound chip that they use to get those distinct beeps and boops in their music.

Genre-wise they're power metal with a gimmick.

I suggest you check out the genre though, it has some awesome and extremely melodic bands in it.

Meshuggah (and bands like them) have managed to carve out their own sub-genre, actually.

It's called "djent", an onomatopoeia for the distinct sounds the guitars make.

That's the one I'm thinking of. I don't know where I got the "math" bit from.

As a general rule, prog refers to bands whose focus is composition, so you'll get long songs with lots of sections and which don't have a simple structure, unusual instrumentation, unusual time signatures, etc. Technical bands are just as complex, but they focus on the raw technicality of what they're playing, so you end up with lots of polyrhythms and songs that usually centre around a single insanely difficult pattern rather than lots of different sections.
Math metal refers to bands who write using time signatures generated by equations or based around specific numbers, like pi.

I don't really like the term because it could easily apply to any style of band that used that guitar tone, whereas what it's supposed to mean is that crunchy polyrhythmic chugging based music. Technical death is the term I'd use.

Ah, so that's what math metal is. That's really interesting.

But I always thought of technical death metal as sounding something more like this:


In terms of simply how they sound I would say Meshuggah fits closer to prog.

Architects are another good metalcore band.

And definitely seconding children of bodom. Completely kickass. As piinyouri said their early albums are much better, but there are a couple of great songs on the newer ones.

If you want to try something new, listen to Between The Buried And Me, Animals As Leaders or some of the celtic metal bands. they're beyond awesome
