Boo to Microsoft for doing this.

I'm a piss poor gamer that likes to enjoy playing stuff, but, oh hey, a $60 dollar price tag? Yeah, that buys me gas for two weeks, you wankers.

I spent 2 years living in China. I bought a modded Xbox. I spent .53 cents for a game, on hundreds of games over there. Then I come back to the states and have to spend insane amounts of cash on games.

Wait, what was my argument?

Oh, they're jerks for banning modders. I modded my box so I could put a larger harddrive in it. So I wasn't forced to buy a 120gb harddrive at the price that thing would have gone for in 1999.

Modded boxes don't always allow for cheats, they just allow for consumers to get a fair deal.

Smells fishy. Just yesterday I read about an UNCONFIRMED STATEMENT from someone inside Microsoft that 600`000 consoles have been banned, and that they are pushing hard to ban at least 1 million before the Christmas shopping rush starts. And today we're reading about 1 million already banned? Sounds like someone jumped the gun.

Also, what is this talk about modchips? There are no modchips for XBOX 360 that allow you to play pirated games, there is no homebrew, all there is is DVD firmware replacement that tricks XBOX into thinking any disc with the game on it is real.

Sure, but it isn't your choice on how much a product costs.
And how dare them greedy companies want to make a profit off a product they sell! They should be giving us free games and chocolate and hookers!!
[/sarcasm]
I don't have a problem with companies setting a price as I can choose not to buy. My problem is that they might take the product away from me after I have paid which is something new that DRM makes not only possible but easy.

i can understand pirating on pc but you can rent xbox games for like 7 bucks for a week it seems a bit silly to me.

And when have they simply taken your game away? It's never happened to me, so I'm fine with the way DRM is
Amazon removed the eBook version of 1984 from people's Kindle devices.

These XBox bannings remove peoples rights to play content they have paid for. Whether they are pirate scum to the man or not Microsoft are using this ability as they like without going through a court or something similar.

It's best to be aware of what you are buying before hand instead of crying afterwards, especially if afterwards nobody will believe you as the corporate database always knows best.

If they're stupid enough to mod their consoles and break the clear rules of the licensing agreement, then they deserve to have their consoles banned. Good work MS.
QFT.

Mind you, I'm guessing it won't be long before someone works their way round the ban. And subsequent bans.

Seems just and perfect of them to decide this before christmas!
Poor ol'e John will get a new one from his Mom.

Glad I poke around on the PC, no nuffin's stopping me from inserting all the fans and unnecessary balls I want without the fear of getting a ban hammer from the the internet.

Every time your XBOX loses the Internet, every game you have ever purchased on XBOX Live Arcade goes away for as long as the Internet is gone. I know that you probably have to agree to that when you buy, but it's still DRM that takes away the game you paid for. And if Microsoft's servers themselves ever went down, EVERYONE in the ENTIRE WORLD would lose EVERY SINGLE XBLA GAME THEY EVER PURCHASED. That does not seem to be a reasonable situation to me, especially since a lot of XBLA games are decidedly single player, with possible online scoreboards but nothing more.

pirates of any nature (somalian or gamer) seem to share the similar characteristic in that when they get caught or shot down (literally for the former haha) they never admit or acknowledge fault (not even an "oops") but instead it's a "how dare you America!" or "nooo Micro$oft banned me" lol
Wrong. My brother got banned today due to this crackdown. He knows it was his fault, he said so.
no, right. well, sorta
I said "seem" as in those I've met
or 'in my experience'
but yeah anyway, props to your brother =)

To everyone that is saying HAHA you got beat down this time pirate!
(note, all prices are in AUD)
This is how a pirates mind works.

Hacking an Xbox 360 = Free
Pirating and burning ANY game = $2 for a disc

Lets say a pirate has 50 games thats $100 OR if they were to buy them legitimately upwards of $4500 ($100ish give or take roughly each)

Then you get the "your console has been banned due to violations of terms and service" and said pirate goes, "oh well, i guess i will have to go buy a forza 3 arcade bundle for $199, sell forza on Ebay for $100 Sell Sega superstars tennis for $50 and sell my old, xbox live banned console on ebay advertised as BANNED FROM XBOX LIVE 360 CONSOLE for about $80.

Yes, people buy consoles that are banned from xbox live, people see it as they don't want to play on xbox live and its a lot cheaper than normal so why not?

Thats right said pirate just made a profit on getting his hacked xbox banned and getting a brand new, out of the box unbanned 360.

Now, i know people who have done exactly this.

Pirates expenses:
........First console.......$399 (expensive back in the day)
........50 games............$100
........Xbox Live Gold.....$70 (for a year)
........Second console..$199 - $100 forza, - $80 old 360, -$50 sega tennis, -$50 wireless controller, -$30 Memory card, -$20 Power supply, cables etc
.......................................+$131

Microsoft has, by banning said pirate they have in effect paid for their pirated games and given them $30 towards their ongoing xbox live subscription as that is left playable on line.

Note: said pirate is NOT me, although i do know Mr Pirate.

Good! Lock 'em out!
I can't stand piracy, so it's good to see something else being done besides ineffective DRM.
Agreed

I paid good money for countless AAA titles on my 360 and I don't want some wanker with an internet connection and a modchip to be get the same title for nothing, they are parasites like Paris Hilton and the Conservatives so I have no sympathy for them
agreed.

i like the use of the term parasite, because that is really what they are. They are mosquitoes pretending to be cool.
Dude, there was this bloke at my old college who LITERALLY scored a girl because he was "fighting the system" why was he? because he got Prince of Persia (the new crappy one) for free because he had his XBox modded, and he was all like "yeah I don't believe that Microsoft should be making us pay for this software, we should all contribute man, you put something up, we will too and we will all enjoy it together!"

yeah he was an arts student... and yeah I was seeing that girl at the time... I am very bitter
wow, the irony being that, as an arts student, he doesn't do anyhting productive.
FIND HIM AND INTRODUCE HIS ASS TO YOUR BOOT
RIGHT. NOW.
Well thats gonna take some doing, I have since finished at college and I am now living 50 miles south of there... in Leeds!

That's odd, I jammed up the paperwork for my creditcard to FINALLY be able to cancel my gold membership, and I can still play Portal and The Dishwasher
You don't need Gold to play XBLA, but you do need to be online with the account that you purchased it with. The second the network cable is unplugged, all your XBLA games convert back to demos. At least all of the games I've seen are that way.
