I can't stand piracy, so it's good to see something else being done besides ineffective DRM.
Indeed. Now if only Microsoft would ban the homophobic 14 year olds who make it so no-one uses the mic on XBLA, it might actually be worth the money.

I think they could have done better things with that kind of power
For example, they could have banned people who use modded controllers and stuff like that instead.

But truly i wish they had a "Mute all annoying players under the age of 14" button, that would do me well

Getting yourself unbanned is easy. Every Xbox 360 has some sort of identifier (a MAC address I suspect). All you need to do is change that so it the machine then gets a new identity.

That shouldn't really count the people who haven't used any of their modded equipment online!

EDIT: Plus those who have only done it to stop the errors (disc reading, RROD, etc) and not to cheat in matches.

Feed em' to the briny deep, the theiving scum.

Pirates deserve what they get. It's a pity that some legit modders may suffer, but they'll figure out a way around it, I suppose... just as the pirates will.
Yeah, that's the part that gets me. I mean, it's all well and good to ban modders while the 360 is a modern console selling new games and all, but what about when MS abandons the console for the Xbox720 or whatever? A lot of people soft mod original Xbox consoles for bigger memory, or to bypass the restrictions MS placed on the systems performance (like being able to load purchased game titles directly from the drive to reduce load times).

Not all modders are out to pirate a million new 360 titles for free. 'Course, a lot of them are. It's definitely better than oppressive DRM, but nobody is proposing this as an "instead of" measure, it's "in addition to," I suspect. MS systems aren't exactly error-proof, and it's conceivable somebody might need to mod the system to avoid errors or crashing caused by freaking Microsoft's shoddy manufacturing.

Edit: The chap right above me is saying what I was trying to get across. So check him out.

My friend was calling me a chicken for not modding my 360, I knew they'd catch on this generation and it'd be a BIG issue. Plus if it red rings, your warranty probably doesn't cover piracy.

Ooooh......uh oh.

Hmmmm, I don't use X-Box live for online games (I got a PC)), but my roomies are in the process of getting it for my 360 to play Madden with other friends. Looks like that may not happen... oh well, let them get their own.

I hope Microsoft enjoys the one million or so customers that they will potentially lose. If they are going to do this then that is a lot of income they will no longet be recieveing because of cancelled Live accounts and posibbly alienating future customers for later generation systems. I think it's a bad call money wise. But then big companies are not known for being bright all the time.

pirates of any nature (somalian or gamer) seem to share the similar characteristic in that when they get caught or shot down (literally for the former haha) they never admit or acknowledge fault (not even an "oops") but instead it's a "how dare you America!" or "nooo Micro$oft banned me" lol
Wrong. My brother got banned today due to this crackdown. He knows it was his fault, he said so.

Agreed

I paid good money for countless AAA titles on my 360 and I don't want some wanker with an internet connection and a modchip to be get the same title for nothing, they are parasites like Paris Hilton and the Conservatives so I have no sympathy for them
agreed.

i like the use of the term parasite, because that is really what they are. They are mosquitoes pretending to be cool.
Dude, there was this bloke at my old college who LITERALLY scored a girl because he was "fighting the system" why was he? because he got Prince of Persia (the new crappy one) for free because he had his XBox modded, and he was all like "yeah I don't believe that Microsoft should be making us pay for this software, we should all contribute man, you put something up, we will too and we will all enjoy it together!"

yeah he was an arts student... and yeah I was seeing that girl at the time... I am very bitter
wow, the irony being that, as an arts student, he doesn't do anyhting productive.
FIND HIM AND INTRODUCE HIS ASS TO YOUR BOOT
RIGHT. NOW.

Exactly. That's probably doing those 1 million a favour.

Secondly, this may persuade some to buy PS3s :D
Well, I highly doubt pirates will buy a PS3, a great part of the reason x360 is still more popular than PS3 is because it can be pirated.

I hate playing online. I never ever take my consoles online. I like playing games with people I know. All hail hamachi.

Why doesn't Sony ever do this?

I know a guy who got his PS3 chipped, so...
