Microsoft Exec: Offline Gamers Should Stick With Xbox 360

Microsoft, at this point you need to be able to sell the Xbox One to as many people as possible, so telling a not insignificant number of them "don't buy our new console" is probably not the smartest move.

Then again just being honest and telling them to stick to the 360 is probably better then telling them to buy your new DRMbox even though it would basically be a $500 Tivo.

What's amazing about this (to me) is that the once-a-day / once-an-hour connectivity is NOT due to a necessity, but specifically as an anti-feature that works to disable the product. If it could be circumvented somehow, the XBone would continue to work fine. And yet all the MS goons seem to believe it is a functional necessity.

In fact, I wonder how long it will be before someone makes a ping-box that simulates phoning home. It sounds like a required accessory for the XBone much like the diorama you stick in front of the camera to fool it into thinking there's only one or two users (to circumvent group charges).

Now that I think of it, the invasiveness of the XBone reminds me a lot of the Riddler's television-enhancing machine (simply called The Box) from Batman Forever.

I wouldn't say it is that faint of a hope. The EU and Microsoft have had a bit of a tumultuous relationship of late. First the EU forced Microsoft to include a thing that popped up on their OS, which gave links and info about other web browsers, so people could make their own choice on what to use. Then when Microsoft broke that agreement the EU fined them $731 million [http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/03/06/us-eu-microsoft-idUSBRE92500520130306]. And then Germany ruled in favour of Motorola in a court case, which meant all Xbox 360 and Windows 7 products were banned from sale in that country. I don't know if the EU as a whole would enact sanctions, but I wouldn't count Germany out from doing something about it.

I have a great Internet connection, in fact I am pretty confident that I could support an always on console, but that's not the point. I don't want to buy a console in which I need to check in because I don't like the thought of being managed like that.

perhaps I didn't say it in the best words, but the sentiment is that many of the games that we really want are clearly being funded through, Sports, COD/ Battlefield, and mobile games. I in no way meant to imply that gaming was otherwise dead, only that many of the games we would like more of would be dead. Pretty sure I'd be seeking employment in other fields if I was foolish enough to think gaming is dying.

They enjoy their games I enjoy mine there is absolutely no reason for this other then I don't like it and it involves my hobby. True, same issue in Canada too. Large parts are dial up, or spotty cell phone internet, and satellite internet. I'm lucky enough to have a fast stable connection. I pity the poor folks in australia with absolute horrible shitty spotty internet, obviously not a Xbone friendly country.

Why not? M$ are probably past the point where they profit on the hardware now, the Xbone will cost them money for every sale. M$ will still get Xbox Live fees and licencing fees for every game sold, the 360 will remain profitable for a while yet so why not encourage people to buy one?

I never said I didn't like games like CoD. Actually, I don't like games like CoD, but I do like CoD; the games in question aren't the point, here, but the people who will mindlessly buy them just because they have a franchise name stamped on them.

And this trickle down economics you seem to imply exists --suggesting that the sale of these games funds more interesting ones-- would maybe hold some weight if we weren't constantly seeing original series like Dead Space and Lost Planet being gutted of all their personality so they can be more like 'what's selling' and then shot in the back of the head when they fail to meet impossible sales targets.

Best case scenario: these series end up being butchered into the same homogenous slop as everything else because it's easier to sell and less of a financial risk.

No, the attitude to girl gamers is stupid because having a vagina doesn't automatically dictate what kinds of games you like to play; a woman will never threaten my hobby by wanting to be a part of it. If girl gamers were demanding that all games be pink and about unicorns and rainbows then you might have had a point, except it wouldn't make a difference because developers refuse to accept that girls make up a huge portion of the gaming population because, well whaddya know, they are busy exclusively catering to the CoD-gargling masses.
