So... anybody willing to explain to me why Microsoft cares about this?
Hacking a gamerscore ruins the experience for the legit players, the people who actually put an effort into it, whereas these guys are just making a few clicks.

Also, Robin Eggs Whoppers trump the feeble Cadbury Creme Egg.

What's this 'gamerscore' you speak of?

Oh, you mean this 4-digit number on my profile?

Seriously, I wouldn't give half a damn if I lost my gamerscore, but I assume that people that are sad enough to hack for it do. Nice of Microsoft to hit them where it hurts.

Hacking to get gamerscore?

Well I guess its slightly less lame then getting somebody else to do it for you.
Oh so true. Irony is, they probably did.

I'm not exactly familiar with the XBL community, but what is resetting a Gamerscore going to do? And also, why the hell do people feel the need to cheat on these games? It is beyond me...
Well, if they are willing to hack and cheat for their score, making them permenantly lose it would likely hurt. I know I would cry if I lost mine, but I dont hack or cheat (ina ToS breaking way, though I have boosted sometimes)

Aww poor boys! Not really of course, shouldn't be playing on the Xbox in the first place. Anyway, cool to see you know the movie Hackers, wasn't it awesome? I wonder if anyone recognizes those lips of the girl from the pic.. Come on think! LIPS!

They couldn't do any worse than erase their gamers score?
If you hack a game on XBL, chances are that IS the worst they can do to you. =P
They've banned people from Xbox live permanently for hacking systems, they can do much worse.

I'm going to assume the "stiff punishment" thing is just sarcasm.

Really, resetting their gamerscores? Strip their damned gold account. They violated the terms of use.

This is one reason I REALLY dislike console multiplayer. No anti-cheat support.

I envision a group of teens stomping angrily around their friends' basement, stoned out of their minds on Mountain Dew and Cadbury Creme Eggs, shouting the three or four obscenities they heard on Xbox Live the night before.

Then one of their mothers comes down, asks if the boys would like some Rice Krispie Treats and, as they solemnly wipe away their tears, one of the nefarious hackers mumbles, "thanks mom. Could we have some Sunny D, too?"
Honestly?.... I think there's something wrong with you... I would suggest seeking medical help.
And removing that picture as there are no typically good looking hackers outside of films.

Cookie for you! Nice job. Somehow I found the lips to be the only resemblance to the A.J. we know today.

Since when is resetting a gamerscore 'stiff punishment'?!
Since it was likely the entire reason the cheaters cheated, I'd say "stiff punishment" is a good way to put it. Take away their points, not just the ones they "stole" but all of them, and they lost the very thing they tried to gain.

As far as we know from this press release the idiots didn't actually cheat in multiplayer. There's anti-cheat support on Live, and accounts (and consoles!) have been permanently banned from from playing multiplayer on the network for being naughty.

While gamerscore may not be relevant to everyone, it obviously is important to these people since they hacked in an effort to boost their score. It's a punishment to fit a particular crime. I think it may be a little bit of overkill to remove the ENTIRE gamerscore. I'd just reset the ones on GoW 2 and ban them from playing online for a particular amount of time.

I just hope against hope that cheater's Gamerscores are actually reset to zero, and not just deducted the points that the cheating earned them.

After all, they may have cheated on others and it's not become public yet.

What were the hacks? I didn't even know you could get hacks for an Xbox 360 game, wow...weird.
