Well yeah, if they banned racist homophobes then XBL would only have about 100 subscribers worldwide.
Well, that's just what I'd expect to hear from a black gayer.
Anyways, I like achievements, but I think it's weird how they've mutated players into obsessives. They're fairly meaningless points, yet my best friend now seems to only play games to get achievements and gamerpoints, to the point where he wants me to play games he's no good at to unlock things for him.
Look at TF2, achievements, while sometimes not conducive to team play, generally fun and lead to something (new alternative weapons), whereas nearly all other achievements lead to nothing but a score.
Hell lets go back to Yahtzee favourite, Painkiller, you could say that the tarot card system was an achievements system, yet it gave you new powers for replaying a level with a limitation, or for killing every enemy, etc.
Of course if I'm willing to step back to fund my argument, I'll offer a counterargument to save time, Pac-Man,Space Invaders, there was nothing but the arbitrary chase of a new high score on offer, yet we were all completely satisfied.
I guess the question is, are achievement points a step back, without any rewards to back them up?
