Reporter: "So how many units do you think Kinect will sell?"

MS Rep: "Our team has calculated approximately 40-million-bajillion units will be sold at launch. That is totally a real number and stuff. Everyone buy Microsoft stock!"

Part of me really wants Kinect to succeed simply due to the fact that it's an innovation in technology (look up the definition, innovation doesn't always have to be something brand spankin' new) and that it could lead to some interesting uses with it in some major games.

But another part of me wants it to fail miserably so that Microsoft will shut it's fucking trap. Sony is playing it cool and safe with their Move controller, a wait-and-see policy, but Microsoft are singing to the high heaven's and going "OMGOMGOMG, IT'S SO AMAAAAAAZING!" and just come off as desperate to me.

I dunno, I just don't know what to think of the whole thing.

Well, I've said it before and I'll say it again.

Thanks for ruining gaming forever, consoles. Hope everybody likes shovelware.
Do you have any idea how much shovel-ware exists for PC? Seriously?

Anyway, I hope it doesn't do this well, but remember people, if it flops then there's a chance a large part of the gaming industry could come crashing down. I mean, probably not, but there's a chance.
Considering that all consoles are just simplified computers, I feel safe in saying that there has been more shovelware released on consoles as a whole group than on the PC. The Wii alone probably accounts for half of that.
You obviously have no idea how much shovelware is sold on PC's. Some people crap out a game a week. Then have the balls to try and charge you a few quid for it. Its insane.

If this motion control doesnt fuck off then Im gonna become a PC gamer

Next they'll be wanting us to play games without a console
Then without using any part of your body

I really hope that Kinect is a complete fucking failure :)
Yes, yes! use your anger, and your hatred! Come to the dar... I mean PC, we have better graphics and more sophisticated gameplay.

...It's optional, if you don't want it fair enough. it has not ruined gaming, in fact, it's opened new doors in gaming. and hell if it goes any further, it can create jobs, which the UK/America (Acctualy probably just the UK) desperately needs.

If you think this has ruined Console gaming you have a very narrow mind.

If you want to blame anyone Blame Nintendo. if it weren't for the Wii i doubt this would have happened.
I blame all three console developers. After all, Microsoft and Sony didn't have to call the Wii shit and then jump on the motion control bandwagon five years later, but they did.
At least Microsoft aren't Copying completely, they took it and changed it, unlike *Cough* Sony *Cough*

Don't get me wrong, i am sceptical about it, and with the all the hate towards it, it could well fail, but saying it will fail when it hasn't coming out is like saying Urgh! i hate eggs, when in fact you may acctualy like them

Old saying, "Never judge a book, by it's cover"
I sense an elitist bastard....

Anyways, I'm not buying it, but it seems interesting.
It will sell well regardless.

AN-It's been ages since I commented.
Because i mentioned Sony? Ohh don't get me wrong, Sony have a decent line of games, and I'm planning on getting one soon. but copying Wii with the Motion controllers? just stupid.
Huh, what? Sorry man, I ment Xzi is the elitist bastard.

I'm not trying anything, But when people come out saying it's going to fail, it gets annoying, no one can possibly know what it's like.

As i said i am sceptical, i know it will take alot for this to work, but for people to come out and say it will fail is really narrow minded.

Sure i admit maybe i should just ignore most of them, and maybe i just being stupid. mehh i dunno =\
You're overly positive about Kinect to an almost fan-boyish level. It's a little too much for a message board that's supposed to be neutral.

Here's the deal, everybody. Microsoft has Mr. and Mrs. Everyman convinced that Kinect is the next great thing for home entertainment. They've spent so much freaking money getting the name out there and making sure that there's enough uproar to make the device seem wanted. This change in sales expectations is completely strategic, as it furthers the idea publicly that it is what everybody wants to buy, and they're buying out news companies so that it is actual published news and such. The Escapist is not likely on this list; I'm meaning news companies more generally viewed by the public: Fox news, LA Times, etc.

Kinect is going to sell very well. So well that it will rival The Wii's initial popularity just because it is the "big product" to have for the holiday season. The problem is when the reviews come out for Kinect, and Mr. and Mrs. Everyman start hearing about the lag and how unresponsive the system is. I really can't see Kinect getting scores any higher than a 5.5 out of 10 from any unbiased game review site. The damn thing is just unplayable.

As long as Microsoft can keep the bad reviews out of the main press, they'll continue to sell. Otherwise, it'll flop (although they will still succeed overall thanks to their ridiculous pre-sale cache)

And here's another thing. Stop arguing that Kinect has to succeed because it's "innovation and thusly good for us all". While I agree that Kinect is trying something different, the technology isn't there, either from a hardware or software point. As some of you may have noticed, the Power Glove was not the most successful piece of hardware. Sure, you could have argued at some point that it was something new and was at least trying to take steps towards future kinetic technology, but it didn't work very well, and didn't have very many good games tailored towards it. Sounds eerily similar to a supposedly wildly popular soon-to-be languished Microsoft product.

Well Microsofts funds do them very good in this instance. I think they'll sell lots of copies mostly because of their crazy advertising.

But anyway, how much money will they make of it? They spend a hell of a lot to get it to work. I suck at economics but here goes anyway:

They spend a few hundred millions in developing this, so lets say 200 million for good measure. They spent almost half a billion in advertisements, so 500 million goes there. Now, I don't know how much profit they get on each sale, but I suspect it wouldn't be too much since the technology is costly and MS are just trying to push as many units as they can into the houses of people.

So let's just go on a limb and say they make 50$ per peripheral which adds up to 250 million if they sell 5 million units. 50 $ already seems like a very, very high profit for that tech, so maybe realistically we're talking around 20-10 $ per peripheral which would get in at a measly 100-50 million on hardware sales alone. Not too much if you consider the 700 odd million or so that were spent in development and marketing. Then again, what about customer support costs? How much will they spend on fixing things once the camera inevitably goes red-lensing of death on people? XD. Joking...

Now I know how it works, companies make dolla dolla bill y'all by selling software, but still. 250 (which is stretching it) out of 700 million? Hmmhm.

With all their crazy marketing I think Kinect will do very well. I wouldn't be surprised if it shoots up to 7 million or so. Marketing is a strong friend in sales. What I will be curious about however is the long time sales and the sharp decline that I anticipate when actual reviews of games and customer satisfaction comes in. I've heard mixed reports. Can't wait to see what people think of it.

I've got a Kinect and it has some fun games, but I'm a little concerned about its accuracy and the variety of games you could play with it. Seems limited.
