Get rid of GfWL and just start packaging Steam with Windows 7 and release all your games through Steam. It's the better product so just accept it and embrace it.

I think if Microsoft wants to save PC gaming it should just give a chunk of money to Valve and Blizzard and then wait for awhile.

Okay, that's the biggest load of bullshit I have ever heard in my entire life. They've built the platform PC gaming was practically built on, yet they frittered all their money away on Games-For-Windows-Stupid-Live. What the fuck do they care? If they're putting games like Fable III on the PC, it's to squeeze more cash from sales. Besides, Steam already beat them to the punch by reinvigorating the PC market, a market that was threatening to stagnate at that point, and it's been doing PC gaming well since its inception. PC support isn't just adding arbitrary controller support and a fucking logo on the box, MS. Get the fucking picture here.
But as stupid as Microsoft are (and they have been REALLY dumb since Balmer has been running things) they aren't going to do the EXACT same thing again, no they will probably make an attempt at superficially copying someone more successful.

Yes, the ideal solution is they just release their games as plain old PC titles, install-wizard, no DRM, no integration, no proprietary peripherals. But how do they CAPITALISE on doing that?

Charging for online with Windows Live was an utterly hamfisted attempt, as they didn't realise that EVERY SINGLE PC USER was just a few mouse clicks away from another service that did not charge? They couldn't do they same as they did for Xbox, but it took them so long to realise and never acknowledged their flaws (openly at least).

I think they will try to copy Steam, keep using Games for Window, but now with a client that does it's best to copy and directly compete with Valve's Steam. And copying success and competition is good in my books, win-wn for the consumer [WISHFUL THINKING ALERT!]

or they could just release their games on Steam. But a "big shot" like Microsoft going to a "small fry" like Valve to distribute their games... even if it is the smart thing to do and it would not harm them in business, I know the hierarchy, ideology and egos within a company... they just won't do it or resist and limit it as much as possible. But then again, Gabe Newell just appeared at Sony's E3 presentation to big up the PS3... so anything is possible.

PS: Halo 3, Crackdown and Gears Trilogy on PC - with mouse aim - *SPLOOGE*

Following Microsoft's buisness plan, GFWL will be scrapped and all the games issued under it's banner will be remade with this new system. "But what about my GFWL games I have?" I hear you cry, you will have to re-purchase them obviously.

The massive trainwreck that was GFWL has convinced me to take this with an entire ocean of salt, but you never know, there's hope.

Although I'm betting that this "Save PC Gaming" really means "Put all games on Windows 7 and add DRM"
Sorry if this sounds stupid but could they lock out or hinder Steam on Windows?
Err, Windows (like Mac OS) is a computer operating system, it would be breach of contract for Microsoft to start arbitrarily removing programs from their operating systems without any concern over security or stability.

Valve wouldn't be the only one to sue, EVERY SINGLE WINDOWS USER could sue in a gargantuan class action lawsuit. Heck, the US federal government could step in and charge Microsoft with anti-competitive practices, which faces fines in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

That is why PC's rule, Microsoft only provides ONE program, to do the simple task of managing my hardware (the definition of an operating system). It is not a walled garden, or a service, or "their environment", it's just an interface they provide and what you do on it is YOUR responsibility. Microsoft have NO RIGHT to remove any program from your system, technically they can't stop you installing any programs either.

Your computer is YOUR SYSTEM, that is how they are different from Consoles and iPhones... you are in their system, effectively you are just renting the hardware, forced to drink their kool aid.

See, even on THEIR OWN OPERATING SYSTEM, Microsoft has little advantage or leverage over Valve and Steam. Even less now Steam is getting settled on Mac, they have spread their investments.

Why would anyone buy Fable 3 for PC? The people who know and care about Fable played it on xbox 360 and the only Fable game PC gamers know of is Fable the lost chapters

Kinect, since it now uses the hardware of the platform it is used on for many calculations, would perform a lot better on PCs than on the Xbox 360. Just putting that out there.

Sorry, but unless they can force publishers to stop with the awful DRM schemes, they won't be saving PC gaming, at least for me.
Come up with a preferable alternative for combating the piracy that has caused the decline, and I'm sure they'll be happy to do that for you, mjc0961.
Remove DRM. The harder publishes attack those that pay $ for their products with DRM etc the more people go stuff it and pirate to get a working copy of the game. Myself, I just dont buy DRM games.

Release gears of war 1-3 in a trilogy set for 70$, release Halo in the same way, start porting all your titles to PC........ assholes......... your the reason why mainstream PC gaming has declined.......
You know, Halo 1 or 2 needed vista to be played. And that was an old, ported game.

I don't exactly see the problem with GfWL. Is it that you have to wait 5 seconds for it to connect? Is it that...idk any thing else that is bad about.
I would like it if somebody enlightened me on the problem with GfWL.
Well, if your not the only one who's playing the game (on your computer), then you have to change user every time. I don't remember much about it (GfWL), but the account transfer was also bad.

I believe Blizzard has enough money (think of WoW). And I'd say: Give it to the makers of Trine 2!

DRM and greedy publishers will doom PC gaming no matter what Microsoft does.
Steam is just about the only bone we get now anyway.

No, the real boost in PC gaming comes next month...I should not need to say what.
Those that do not know, may remain intrigued/indifferent.

It was Halo 2 and they were trying to hard to get people to support vista and DX10.

Games are probably too pricey, given how much a** is being served in them now. Ever since I fell for MW2 and BC2, I... well, hadn't felt ever so f*cked around with.

If I had waited for a crack, I'd know for how much I sold my leg. Lesson learned. Wait for the pirates. Too much of a risk, otherwise.

Less exclusives makes me a happy panda. I know Microsoft will pull through, because they owe us. They owe us.

And I've never had a problem with GFWL. Scanning through this thread, it seems I'm either lucky or missing something important.

well they should care about pc gaming no doubt. Gaming is what keeps the windows plattform alive more or less and well above far more robust systems like Linux and Os/X

Well, the implementation of GFWL has varied but with games like Street Fighter IV, there has been nothing broken in it. It's just that it's basically inferior in every way to its competition on the PC.

Dawn of War 2 and Bioshock on the other hand have had asinine implementations of it. No saving without logging in? What?

Essentially the biggest mistake it does is that it converts a system that works fine on a completely different interface without consideration on how it might work on another interface. Oh, and then of course comes the fact that devs are obviously neglecting the thing and would rather either build their own systems, use something like Steam or just not sell their stuff on the GFWL marketplace altogether.

It's because you're getting the acronym wrong. It's GFWL.

The problem MS is having... is that making the 360 compelling for gaming and making the PC compelling is a zero-sum game for their part. On one hand you have the fact that console games are just that much bigger for the moment so they're trying to chase that market. On the other is the realization that now that they've basically made a machine that practically plays everything people used to run Windows for, the need for Windows is dropping.
