Dante's Inferno.....

OT: We obviously missed that staff meeting.

Didn't they JUST say about a month ago that "They hadn't forgotten their hardcore gamer fanbase that made it popular in the first place"? Or was that just a dream? (A rather happy dream, but still, I do that sometimes.)

What is this I don't even...

OT: Considering in 2006, when it was made, it was targeted towards gamers, that means it was made for gamers. Sound right?

Perhaps it's all those games on it that make us think it's for gamers?

Or the unfamily friendly language rocking the headphones?

See console users, this is why we're so damn protective of our PCs...we can feel Microscoff's dirty hands just pawing at us through Windows.

That's a load of shit. They just want to get more sales. Obvious trick it obvious. They're just pissing off their core consumers now.
Microsoft, good job. Keep up the good work. Soon you'll have us all pissing on your next console.

I'm starting to wonder if the consoles intend to whore themselves out completely toward casual gamers and the suddenly all important family audience, starting with the Wii and now with Move and Kinect.

Thank god I'm a PC gamer. At this rate that's going to be the last refuge of gimmick free gaming.

I was always pretty sure this is where consoles were headed anyway, ever since they were also able to play music CD's on the PS1. I'd never imagined the Kinect as the mascot of true "family entertainment centres" though...

Funny I thought the xbox 360's main goal was to crap out after a year of use (if your lucky). Because microsoft does not know how to test their dam machines

"oh lets throw this thing out its been so long evry1 is anxious"

"we have not fixed some of the problems, mainly an issue with over heating"

"who cares, faster is better, they can spend money fixing evry year or buy a whole new system. That sounds good to me"

"what a dick. But corporate gets what corporate wants"

and what is the result a nice RRoD to go with all the BSoD's whats next microsoft?
HFYSoDaD? (Happy, Fun, Yellow, Screen of Death and Destruction.

Honestly I have an original Xbox STILL and a PS2 STILL for some 5+ yrs now and never had ANY problem

My bro gets a 360 and it craps out in like 6 mos. He has to drop like 100 more dollars into it. It is sooo whack.

Thats all im saying

Obviously your brother doesn't take care of his console. I've had the original xbox since it came out. It still works.

Also, spellchecker, please use it, it does help us understand you.

"I've got to disagree with Mr. Balmer. Until anyone would actually buy the Xbox 360 for the primary purpose of doing something other than playing games, it is a gaming console."

I bought my 360 for the primary purpose of watching on my new HDTV videos stored on my home network. Playing games was a "nice bonus" but was far, far away from my main reason to buy it.

Three years later the 360 is used 80% or more for "family entertainment" and 20% or less for playing games. Although most Escapist staff and readers may spend most of their time playing games, it may also be useful to keep in mind that if you only talk to gamers, your perspective may be a little skewed.
From someone who barely uses his xbox anymore due to lack of money for new games but plenty for dvd's, I can also attest to this. All the new features, while seemingly minor, do seem to be building towards it. And people should bear(bare? that always confused me) in mind that he didn't say it was there yet. Only that he hopes it goes that way. And who can blame him? Money's in the casuals.

Didn't we just have a news article a while back about how Microsoft likes to leave the demographics that got it to where it is out in the cold?

First PC, now core Xbox gamers. Who can they get rid of next?

The system can also be a gaming console. It doesn't just have to be a family center. Now the xbox in my house is mine to be used for gaming, but otherwise it could serve many purposes, I can still enjoy Mass Effect 2 while one person could use Netflix, as another uses Kinect.

Smooth move, trying to move on the market the Wii has already nicely captured with a more expensive alternative while ignoring what has so far been your core market. Someone needs to beat MS's marketing department over the head with a hardcover copy of The Long Tail so that they understand that a small but highly faithful niche market is just as good as a large casual[footnote]'Casual' is marketing-speak, not insulting 'casual gamers', at least not on this particular post.[/footnote] market.

This will just cause wasted ad money and help only manchildren who want an excuse to buy a video game. 'But dear, it has Hulu!'

Captcha: reaches again. I am scared.

Know shit.

Its the same with all "game" consoles these days. They're multimedia devices now.

The last game console for gamers was the Dreamcast.
