Why at a time when the mainstream is finally warming up to gaming are game console manufacturers suddenly ashamed to be video game companies?

Read a little harder plz. There was nothing that needed to be spell checked and any1 who IM's or has a cellphone could read it just fine, I SAID HE HAD A 360!!!! And no my bro takes impeccable care of his systems. I am not dissing the old systems. I said they are awesome. I just, can't for the life of me, see why the 360, which should be superior, has 3 MAJOR flaws

1. virtually no backwards compatibility. tho i know why they do that. it is so to play all the old games you have to buy them again on xbox live and play them that way. If you do not still own an xbox. greedy buggers!

2. Red Ring of Death- nuff said on that

3. A worthless amount of hard drive space, compared to the obviously superior original Xbox

Well, at least we now know why MS doesn't care about PC gaming; they're too busy focusing on trying to turn something into something that it was never really meant to be. Good luck, MS, because you'll definitely need lots of it. =P

With the games that sell the most on this "family entertainment system" it seems to say that the family who kills together, stays together.

Also why can't it be called a gaming console and still have the appeal for everyone to use it? Families play games, BOARD GAMES BRING FAMILIES TOGETHER. You don't call it a family entertainment table cozy.

Who's he fooling? If I weren't interested in games, I would simply purchase a DVD player for a fraction of the price.

And this would have nothing to do with how Sony tried to market the PS3 as both a console and a home entertainment system for families.

Seriously though I don't see too much wrong with this. Gamers will still buy it, and it's not like the statement will effect gamer sales too much. Anyone who wouldn't have bought it is the sort of PC/PS elitist who wouldn't have touched the thing from the very first day it was released, even if it had nothing but blood and titties on every title to promote 'maturity.'

So yeah, advertise it this way and get more people interested, the gamers they want will still buy it, and they'll boost their sales through the families, which is more than can be said for PS3s and most gaming computers.

Seriously? Xbox was marketed from the beginning as a game console. Trying to radically change it's image now sounds like a bad move.
Not only is it a bad move but it shows us as the minority of the market according to him "family entertainment" is far more important.

Also it seems this is just another marketing scheme to milk money from the other types of people untapped.

I don't care for this myself. I understand that Microsoft is going where it perceives the money to be, but at the same time this kind of focus definatly seems like it's going to wind up hurting the gamers who are the core audience that carried them this far.

Also, I confess to a degree of concern here. This family gaming push makes me think that things might have gone as well with the supreme court as a lot of the gaming media would have us believe, with Microsoft preparing to re-orient for dedicated family gaming if it can't cater to the market that has been sustaining the X-box this long.

That said, the major appeal of gaming is still that it's something you can do yourself as a form of escapism. Social gaming is great on a lot of levels, but the majority of gaming is still all about the single player experience.

The thing is that a console promoted as a family game box is not the kind of thing you curl up with on your own and play "M" rated games on to relax. Safety features aside, I don't think I'd want to be revving up some of the games I play in the middle of a family day room with everyone around. Heck, among other things it would totally ruin the survival horror experience. :p

I will be rubbing my hands together with glee when the casual audience moves on from this to the next big thing.
It's a fad, the same as Pokémon Cards, Troll dolls and Justin Bieber.
Mainstream audiences are extremely fickle, like teenage girls leaving the guy they're with for the new hotness, and then ditching the new hotness for the newer hotness.
Give it a few years and Microsoft will be crawling back, ashamed and in disarray, pawing at the feet of the core gamers and begging for forgiveness for its misdeeds.
And knowing gamers and their distinct ability to follow the age old mantra of "Fool me once, shame on me. Fool me twice, shame on you." they will allow them right back in, leaving the cycle to begin anew.

Not that I care either way. I had two 360's, they both died from, gosh, me daring to use them for extended gaming sessions (yeah, a 12 hour guitar hero session is going to cause the system to overheat, but we're GAMERS, if the system they've created cannot stand up to more than 2 hours of use, then it's quite frankly not good enough,) while my NES is still in prime working condition.

Captcha: talk the talk
More proof that computers are goddamn SENTIENT and merely biding their time, waiting for us to give them legs, fingers and thumbs before they enslave us all, tying us to chairs and forcing us to have FAMILY BONDING TIME for all eternity. >:{{{{{{{

It's just a marketing ploy. Nothing out of the ordinary, and certainly nothing to get upset about.

I kinda feel bad with these companies trying to make things family friendly, I have a nice working family system, but I don't want to sit around playing xbox with them. Why can't I live in this sugar coated fantasy world where families are all gumdrops, unicorns and rainbows.
