Still, $5.5 billion is a lot of change to blow on a product that's still not turning a profit. It'll be interesting to see how long Microsoft continues to invest in Bing if it keeps losing money in disturbingly high amounts like seen in the graphic here.
Well color me not shocked.

Microsoft loses money on everything except Windows and Office.

Hell, I don't think they've broken even on XBOX yet and that's raking them piles of money.

Bing is only 2 years old?? That was the only thing I was surprised by in this article, you simply can't beat Google at their own game.

They're making a hell of a lot of money on the Xbox as far as I know. They turned a profit a couple of years ago (on 360, perhaps not in total).

Amusingly this is the first time I've ever heard of Bing. Looking at it now, it looks exactly like Google, just with a side bar. Like Google+ and Facebook, it makes you wonder why people would switch over to some other service when the one they're using does the job fine.
If that were the case, I'd still be using hotmail and MySpace.

Microsoft seems to be doing a lot of hemorrhaging lately, and I blame that on the fact they are being too "Me, too!"-ish by trying to chase after everyone's honey pot instead of getting their own. In the past, Microsoft was able to just push their way into other markets using their size and financial weight because many were intimidated by Microsoft. Unfortunately for Microsoft, those days have passed. In my opinion, they can't afford to keep playing the "Me, too!" game and need to focus on a market or set of markets that are uniquely Microsoft's.

I think with C#, Microsoft was trying to compete with C++ and Java, simultaneously.

Microsoft is dumb for trying to compete with every other company in the world.

Nintendo
Sony
Apple
Google

Four of the biggest companies in the world and Microsoft wants to monopolise the industry by getting rid of them all...no matter how much money MS has got they can't buy out businesses who make just as much themselves.
They're not monopolizing... they're competing. And taking on so many companies on at once in completely different fields - and SUCCEEDING (successful competition is not being tossed out of the market) - is not dumb, it's positively celebration-worthy.

I'm not sure you understand how the market works.

Sure, Bing hasn't been a success, but it's still there. Plus, they have the lion's share of PCs (outdoing Apple), they have a small following for their music players and phones (not outdoing Apple, but they haven't been defeated either), they have a very strong following in their game consoles (Nintendo sold more, but they have less fan loyalty), and such. I fail to see why this is bad for Microsoft... at all.

This reminds me of 'Games for Windows Live', the buggiest online game system ever, to try to compete with Steam.

They don't even touch it now, and would rather pretend it never happened. Pity I still need it to play fucking Fallout3.
Nope. When I started modding it, I had to install a script extender, which had the "unfortunate" side effect of disabling GFWL. Move your saves to the relevant location (ie. one folder back) and voila - Fallout 3, GFWL free.

TO be honest, I actually prefer Bing to google at this point. For one, I'm a bit creeped out that Google seems to be somehow monitoring my personal searching trends and somewhat predicts what I'm looking for. There's something under the surface there that bothers me, but at this stage I do not yet know what that is.

That and on my phone the Bing app seems to work much faster and returns things closer to what I'm looking for.

Lastly, at home or mobile, Bing seems to bring up things closer to what I'm looking for. My job requires me to do a lot of research, and as a perpetual student I do an equal amount of searching for information or data. Bing usually gives me what I need without me having to skip the first two or three search pages that are full of ads, links to products, and porn like I get in a Google search.

I think though it just comes down to preference and Google right now has the bigger name recognition.

I thought C# was supposed to be an alternative to Java? (They are very similar, in terms of coding)

I'm not really anti-Microsoft but I think it's promising to see that they can't simply use their position as the leading OS in the world to force their way into a market and take it over.

Also the concept of switching from entering key words to 'natural language' or 'full sentences' into a search browser is horrible. Only the completely computer illiterate would be comfortable with that idea, but as most probably aren't the best typists either they'll probably find themselves happier sticking with key words.
How is it bad exactly. I hated on google getting a bunch of random ass porn while searching for some science website that my teacher liked to use because he was a giant ass prick.

My point, I'm young and I'd rather not have to do random key word searches, which don't always work and barely get to what your going for, its like throwing your hand into a lake, legend says theres gold in the lake, but you will actually catch are pirahhnas, mad that you interrupted their lunch.
I hope you realize that you come across as being completely computer illiterate with your post, which makes the exchange somewhat amusing.

Anyway, even if you are technologically inept, you can already use natural language and produce results.
Google will simply pick out keywords out of your sentence and use those.
It'll even compensate if you can't spell words.
Its not that I can't DO the key word system, its just I'd rather type a sentence, blame my father, got me into that habit.
I asked how its bad, you didn't tell me.

I'd assume you've searched for a good bit of porn on Google before that.
Ha, that was good one.
No, the website was something that combined letters of orgy and nerd, it was a pretty random website, overall.

My work uses Bing as the default search engine. I can't stand it. It doesn't come up with proper results as well as Google does.
And thus the mystery as to why nobody likes using the service is revealed!

But yeah, messing with Google in their home turf? It took balls to do it but it also took 5.5 Billion to flat out lose it seems.

It's the default search engine on my work computer, and I switched it to google since that one gets me the actually results I wanted in the first place.

Was a pain in the ass to switch though.

This has already stacked up to a little over two pages and has a lot of hi-larious Facebook comments associated, but did anyone think to double-check the "14.7% of the search engine market share" figure?

A cursory glance at a few other sites shows that MS has about 30% of the market with half of that being through Yahoo. What's more is that that figure seems to grow little by little every month.

So, the hell?

Because it caters to incompetence.
That always works out well, right?

I wouldn't be surprised it the top search on Bing was "google".

I wonder how much of Bing's 7% share is down to how it is the default search on every device relating to microsoft?
Totally agree.

Bing sucks plain and simple. The first thing I ever do on a strange computer... change default search to Google. You'd think for 5.5 Billion it would at least work well...

Not a bad little search engine, but Google still looks and feels cleaner, and that's what I want from my webs.
Of course, I'm wondering if Microsoft seriously expected this to turn any profit any time soon. I mean, competing with Google isn't the most economically viable business strategy I've seen.
Yes, every time I have used another search engine (or browser, Google Chrome is awesome) I have not felt very much at home, there is unnecessary crap all over my page and I have to wonder where some of the search results come from.
"competing with Google isn't the most economically viable business strategy I've seen."
That was awesome! One has to wonder what Google does... okay buzz failed, but as for the rest...

LOL! I know that that is what I type in it if ever I am forced to use Bing. "Because it's not google" is not a good enough reason, they actually need to make a search engine that is better, if not equal to Google. Which probably won't happen.
