Wait, hl2 has 81 reviews all positive...
Minecraft has 10 all positive reviews.
and half-life 2 has almost all positive 1.3k + user reviews.

Yea, that's gunna change in a month or 2.

The game won two GOTY awards before it was even released. It really is that good.

Oh man, Metacrtic said it, it must be true. I'm a massive fan of the game but it's not the 'End all, Be all' of videogames.

It's all hype like how 'Avatar' was and how 'Skyrim' is.

I think that's about right. Minecraft is a genuine phenomenon and will go down in history as one of the most important games of this decade. To some extent it's a game that you either 'get' or don't, and I'm sure a lot of the early adopters who bought it when it was in Alpha are jaded or burned out on it, but it's far more deserving of such a high score than any of the sequels that make up 95% of the other high profile releases this year.

I do believe the Minecraft fandom is about the only fandom where the fans are actually more annoying than the haters (And that's coming from the guy that hates Halo with the burning hate of a million suns.).
Any game platform fan (PS3, 360, PC, etc)
My Little Pony fans
Skyrim fans
My Little Pony fans
Piracy/Illegal File Sharing of game fans
Mother fucking My Little Pony fans

I could keep going, but really: fans are more annoying than the haters all the time.

Skyrim, surprisingly actually lived up to the hype.

OT: Man, I love minecraft.
But, the graphics aren't really retro, it's just notch being lazy, and the plot (yes, there's a plot, in the end credits) is more crap than cods will ever be. Seriously. The latest updates drags it down to a 4~5 from a previous 10

Very true. Fans generally do not know what they want and come off as looking stupid in most cases like this. Though I frown a little at the excessive use of "My Little Pony fans", even if it is true.

(snip) I do not believe it deserves to be above a 90% let alone the 97 it has. To me, that is a joke.(snip) Does it truly deserve to beat 99.9% of all games? (snip)
If you ask me that 97% doesn't say that Minecraft is hands down one of the best games ever played, just that there is very little that can be improved in Minecraft.

The more complicated a game gets the more differences in personal taste will affect how much you like it. For example the Modern Warfare games are pretty complicated in premise and mechanics, and if I were in charge I would make a lot of changes to the games to make them fit in better with my personal tastes.

But Minecraft is simple, build stuff and don't get killed; and you can make it even simpler by playing on creative or peaceful mode. And as far as the building stuff goes Minecraft is damn near perfect. There really isn't anything I would add or change about the building stuff aspect of Minecraft, especially if you use creative mode. That is why Minecraft deserves a 97. Not because it is THE BESTEST GAME EVAR!!!! but because it has almost no room to improve as a creativity toy, and that is a very good thing.

I'd disagree that Skyrim even comes close to how awesome everyone thought it was going to be, for me atleast. That's just my opinion though, if you're digging it, good for you.

Thing about Minecraft is, it's the first really popular entry into a new genre.

It's the same idea as angry birds, really - it may not be the best, most original, best-looking game out there when compared objectively, but with nothing really to compare it to, it truly represents the pinnacle of its genre to date. Minecraft is the sandbox exploration crafting game to which all future endeavors will inevitably be compared, and while it may not objectively deserve a perfect score, in a way it deserves the scores it's getting (including the perfect ones) simply for its monumental impact on gaming itself.

The metascore will drop in time.

What's important is that Minecraft stripped back all the guff that comes with modern games. Here is a 'game' that uses bricks to generate a huge planet, gives the player stuff to do to survive, and lets them create. On a good multiplayer server it's a total hoot. And giving users simple tools (redstone+switches=circuits!) allows them to do amazing things. And the community scene is great too. The planes mod blew me away.

It's a milestone in gaming. It's a wonderful game to play and enjoy, and I hope my kid (who's a week old) gets to experience games like Minecraft when he's old enough.

I've lost countless hours to this game. I don't expect everyone to get it, but it is absolutely brilliant at what it does.

In fact, I've just fired it back up after a bit of a break, and I'll probably see the sun rise now because of that! My only complaint is that my laptop is burning the shit out of my leg.

I'd be willing to give it an 8/10 - but that's for 1.7.3. Nowadays it's about a 5.

So glad I got the old .jar off someone, I can finally go back to the glory days :D

Edit: if anyone wants a safe 1.7.3, just PM me. I guess to keep from getting in trouble with the mods, show a proof of purchase or something.
Not trying to nitpick but I'd hardly call 1.7.3 "The glory days"
But I kind of get it. When I bought minecraft back in alpha I spent countless hours on it. Somepoint later I just stopped, I think it was a month after beta, can't remember. I kept telling myself I'd play more again when it released but I just can't get into it.
Same here. I even joined a couple of multiplayer servers to play with friends. I payed 15 dollars for it back in alpha or somewhere around there and I had a lot of fun with it but then just got tired of it and have said I will go back to it but I just don't think a game should need mods like a lot of my friends do to actually get it to be fun to play.

Yeah, Minecraft clearly deserves a 97. It's not like Notch didn't forget mod support. Or optimizing the code. And changed a game about being the video game version of Lego into Terraria 3D.

This is why I don't give a shit what reviewers give games, because they practice pure lunacy.

Yeah, you're right, it probably won't stay that way for long. Skyward Sword had a 98 there for a while, remember?

OT: Good for Notch. I'm glad to see some independents getting some love.

I've been playing since Alpha 1.2_02 or something like that (I forget the exact version number).

Since then I have seen Minecraft evolve tremendously into what we currently have. I would certainly say it is one of the best games out but I honestly can not say whether or not 97 is justified.

BUT:
It does offer infinite re-playability

Minecraft is constantly generating a randomised completely open world. The player is free to do whatever they want and the game shows very few restrictions.

It caters to players that want to simply go and build whatever their imagination can dream up, and it caters to players that want a more survival type experience. It also caters for everything in between.

Then comes the community and what it offers. There are a forever growing amount of mods. Some alter the world generator, some add new blocks. For people that want to up the gameplay there are mods like Millenaire that add random NPC villages with much more extended AI. There are mods like Mo's Creatures that add a lot more wildlife to the game.

For players that need more direction there are mods like Tales of Kingdoms that give the player a goal and reason to do things (Tales allows the player to kill mobs for honor and eventually build a kingdom where s/he can buy and sell items, upgrade the keep, etc).

So all in all, the reason Minecraft is such a huge success comes down to the never ending gameplay.

Decide for yourself whether 97 is appropriate.

It definatly deserves that score. Its a solid game that just gets better over the months. I've played since alpha 1.2.6, carried through this whole time.

I only love it because its different. Unique.

I think, as with all metacritic scores, that Minecraft's review score is skewed and matters very little in the end. I hear all this hype about it, and yes I've played it, and in the end its nothing but a time-sink like all other games, except the substance is lacking unless you make it substantial. And sure, some gamers can love that.
But in the end its got no real plot to speak of, so is just a digital lego set. Sure its cool that people can build world sized computational device simulations or large statues of {insert popular character here}. I just don't think that it truly holds up as a game. Its a toy.

And this, ladies and gents, goes to show that the cult of personality sells more than actual quality of content. Because, while we can sit here and fawn over the creatively limitless possibilities of Minecraft as a sandbox, it does still have its flaws - the graphics are hideous (intentionally or not, facts are facts) and there are times i've had issues such as clipping or getting stuck. Or having monsters spawn inside a fully lit building.

It has problems that barely register on the critical radar and yet i've seen AAA titles get knocked down a peg from - say a 9 to an 8 - for less reasons than that, and while people are inclined to ruffle the indie scene's hair like a little scamp and say "here's your allowance early, don't tell your mother!" i don't think that it should be necessarily excluded from the same levels of professionalism that other games in the business strive for. Yes, we all love Notch, his success story is inspiring; but such gushing praise does nothing more than damage the credibility of 'professional critics' by being seemingly oblivious to objectivity. Minecraft is a great game, i just wouldn't call it 'close to perfection'.
