If you want that 25% discount for purchasing the game during its extended beta
Wait. So i DONT get the game for free as promised for buying the beta? Is no one else upset by this? That's one of the reasons i bought the damn thing early! While it may be a quaint game, your presumed 'popularity' over this game, notch, is making you an ass. first, you take on bethesda by BLATANTLY saying "my games better than yours. so im going to release it on the same day as skyrim." then, in the interview with todd howard, you basically shat your pants in complete fear.so now where do you get off thinking you can screw me over by telling me that your backing out on your word of giving the game to me for free since i bought the beta. Not to mention the blatant rip off of all the modders out there...

I won't be buying this. Plain and simple.
You already bought it, when the actual game launches you'll basically just get a patch download and bam, version 1.0, when you bought the beta you bought the game at a 25% discount for what it will cost for everyone else after it launches

So now everythings just going to be DLC. well that sucks now we'll actually have to start paying for updates (including possibly the dragon if it isnt available now [I havent kept up on my updates]). Well, guess 1.0 is the most recent my Minecraft game will be.
I think he said that any added content won't cost you anything

As long as 1.0 fixes that friggin' glitch that makes some computers (mine included) use up 2GB of RAM per minute, I'll be happy.

That's the thing about going gold. You're not in beta anymore. You no longer have an excuse if your game has a game-breaking problem like that.

So now that Minecraft is done which one of the Escapist reviewers will actually review it. I mean at this point EVERYONE anywhere near games has bought the thing. ( its a third the price of a AAA title.) I think Susan would probably be best at reviewing it from a unbiased stance. Does anyone else have an opinion on this....?
I think it would be awesome if they all put in their two bits, sharing their favorite parts of the game. One can review Creative mode, another Survival, another the Multiplayer, and the fourth anything left over plus a top ten of Escapist's favorite mods for Minecraft.

Okay, a little bit of rumor control to help the confused masses:

What someone made after Notch said there would be a sky land
I'm pretty sure the Aether mod a suggestion for Minecraft, then later actually started by modders, then Notch said he was going to make a skyland, and then he made that...
Notch never seemed happy with how the Skyland he was working on was coming out. Making it into the End seemed like a fair change of plan. He never said he was going to completely nix giving us a skyland. It just will happen in an after release update. In the meantime those who really want their skyland can enjoy the Aether mod, which some people seem to forget is actually possible because Notch supports mods of Minecraft. Something more and more other companies are restricting.

Updates are not going to be charged for after release. If Mojang makes an actual expansion to the game, something beyond just a handful of new content, then that might be charged for but they have never said for certain that they ever plan to. Those who joined back before Minecraft went to Beta definitely don't have to worry about that at all.
Considering the list price of the game is going to be $30 for Americans, any expansions will probably just be $10 the most. Small change, I say.

That is not what it says. Anybody who hasn't bought the game yet still has to the 18th to pay the Beta price, otherwise they have to pay full price after Release. Anyone who has bought it before the 18th merely has to wait for the update to be released. No contracts, no blood oaths, no extra charges. If you bought it during Beta, you get the whole game for just $25. If you bought it sooner like during Alpha, you got it for less. There are no extra charges for when the game hits Release. I hope this clears this up for you so you can take advantage of the Beta price.

Doesn't stop EA, Ubisoft, or Bethesda from letting that happen when they release their games. And that memory leak got plugged with prerelease 5.

Anyway, I am looking forward to Release Day. I will be working that night, which means I will probably be sacrificing any sleep I usually get after a shift. Oh well, that's what Red Bull is for.
Let's go dig a hole!

I'm supposed to not see this kind of shit! I paid for a PubClub membership so let me browse in peace!
Get an adblocker. You're already paying the Escapist to not see ads, so it's justified if they can't hold up their end of the bargain.
Apparently the escapist saw my as a low content post and put me on "Probation" for it. I am NOT going to renew my pubclub membership when it is due because of this bullshit.

To be fair, it was a little out of place in the middle of a news thread, I would've made a thread in off-topic for it. The probation is a bit extreme though, considering you were just pointing out a problem with the site.

Minecraft won PC Gamer's and PC PowerPlay's GOTY in 2010 for the Beta release. So maybe back to back GOTYs for the same game?

Only if you bought it in alpha, the agreement changed when it went to beta, so he can charge beta players for updates past 1.0

Having seen the Yogscast review of the Aether mod, I'm glad Notch didn't work something that complicated into the game. Needing a whole new set of tools to obtain materials? What were they thinking? Granted, I would love to be able to dig "cloud" and build myself a proper Rainbow Dash Cloud Castle?, and the bouncy goo blocks sound fun as hell, but everything else is just so, so wrong.

I'm getting the feeling that the tradeoff for buying the game when it was cheaper is getting hooked on a game that's very different from the finished product and which I can never go back to now, unless someone who feels similarly and has more Java savvy than me decides to make a mod that basically adds the old "mode" back in as an option (with all the bug fixes and new block types still in place, of course).
The game is not too different from what it was, it's just better. Also, if the "old 'mode'" you mention is Creative Mode without monsters, then you can play that way.
"Better" is subjective. (Captain Obvious... AWAY!!!) And by old mode I meant food insta-heals, biomes are small enough that you don't need to trek a whole day to find another one, enemies haven't been buffed just to make the hardcore crowd happy... that sort of thing. Not to mention I don't really want to import my old worlds into an update that completely changes the way new chunks are generated. Don't get me wrong, I've been playing 1.8 on the downstairs computer and it's definitely ... something, but I wish I could have both versions on at once the same way I can play a game or its sequel depending on my mood.

Notch has probably raked in enough money that upgrades past 1.0 will be free for everyone who bought the game regardless of when anyway.
Since when is having made a lot of money an incentive to not keep gouging people for more? Granted, he doesn't seem greedy enough to do that, but considering that the vast majority of DLC in the "real" gaming world is the money-cost variety, I still wouldn't jump to any conclusions.

doggie015 said:
Besides it would probably be impossible to keep track of who purchased when anyway considering it's unprecedented success
He probably already has. You have an account with their system that you need in order to log in to the game, and I can't imagine why they wouldn't have kept the purchase dates on file.

Well, I wouldn't say "game-breaking", really. I mean, what percentage of players would actually build a large computer that takes an obscene amount of RAM? And besides, you can still play the game as intended, really. I do sympathise, though, that happened to my computer too.

If 'The End' is really the end of the game, and the Enderdragon really is the last boss; then this will be my greatest disappointment in gaming ever. It also shows a great deal of laziness that everything got so bland towards the end.
Minecraft sits solidly on the "Toy" side of the "Toy vs. Game" divide, which is why some (me included) prefer Terraria, which is far more of a game. I have no problem with Notch/Minecraft, I just think that it has similarities with Second Life (a toy I despised) in that it does not really offer a lot of gameplay. Even online, the mostly build- rather than game-oriented community does not really help the situation.

To people who haven't played this before, this is a big thing. To the other 99.999999999999% of the gaming world, this stands out from a regular update like a polar bear in a snowstorm. Or two ghosts in a snowstorm eating marshmallows.

The worst part is I have minecraft but I just never installed it |D

Does seem a bit harsh. I wonder what's happened though. I've had pubclub for ages and never seen anything of that sort.
Have they snuck in ads of some kind anyway? Or have you got some kind of trojan/infection/toolbar or something like that lurking in your system?

Either case is bad news. (Though the second one is much worse for you personally, I'd say.)

Hopefully this means I'll finally be able to play it for more than an hour without everything crashing. Can't remember it being stable since 1.5 on both my netbook and desktop, and have never been able to find any legit fix for the problem. Have also got a bad feeling when I next load up my world I'll be in the middle of an ocean underwater.

The end of the beta does Minecraft will now be sold for full price. If you want that 25% discount for purchasing the game during its extended beta, you've only got a couple of days left to come up with the ducats.
I'm sorry, I don't understand. Does this mean I have to pay for Minecraft 1.0, and I get a discount because I bought the beta?

No, it means you already got the discount back when you bought it.
If you don't have the game yet, and still want that 25% discount you have to buy it before the 18th.

I really don't see how people are confused about the purchase pricing. The 25% discount is what the Beta price was, so it will be going up to the full price at "launch." If you bought the game, you already own it... Why would they make you buy a game that you've already bought?

some of the best 8 quid I ever spent on a game to be honest. Its pure simplicity at its finest here and focuses on just fun game play, oh and I really wanna kill a dragon!

Grats to Notch for making a game so good I've spent about 5 days worth of game play on.

I still do prefer Terraria though.... sorry >.<
