Veeeeeery interesting.

*suspicious eyes*
This whole thread is making me a little suspicious. I mean that Mr Jones guy has posted a zillion times and even quoted my same post twice.

It's also not like the Escapist to immediately shun a game like this. Everyone seems to be treating it as though it's an actual 2D Minecraft rather than just sharing similarities. I'm sure I never saw this much hate for the actual rip-offs like FortressCraft and whatnot.
Because at least FortressCraft was on the 360 so there was kind of a viable reason for its existence.

As I said, you could run Minecraft on a banjo, nail clippings, and a chunk of foreskin, so why you'd bother with a 2D version (virtually every feature is a rip) is beyond me.
Well my PC can't run Minecraft and I know a lot of other people who can't run it.

That game isn't a 2D Minecraft either, it's a 2D platformer with similar mechanics. I saw tons of stuff in that video that aren't in Minecraft and it's not even released yet.

It might not necessarily be good but seriously what's with the kneejerk reactions today.
I just watched a 4:44 long video that screamed "MINECRAFT PLUS A FEW MAGIC ABILITIES" at me.

Not exactly kneejerk.

And what are your system specs, because I find it hard to believe you know "a lot of people" who can't run Minecraft.
He might be missing the banjo

I think it looks pretty fun. I also actively play Minecraft. I don't see why either side of this argument is getting so offended by things though.

The game looks great, might even be better then minecraft for those of us that like combat more.
Know what else is better than Minecraft for those who like combat more?

Diablo II. World of Warcraft. Zelda.

Neither of those have anything to do with Minecraft, though, and Terraria seems to be missing the point of the game if it's really trying to emulate it in 2D.

I loved Diablo II. I created tons of guides etc on Gamefaqs for years for that game. One of my all time favorites.

Zelda (the original) was also godlike for me when it came out. One of my first NES games and other then things like Wizardry: Proving grounds of the mad overlord and Zork my first RPG (and definately my first action RPG!).

Minecraft is fun for me in many different ways, but I wish it had more of an adventure feel and I'm sure that I'm not the only one. I also happen to love 2d platform games especially if they are similar to Symphony of the Night, and that is what the video makes me think of.

No clue if it will be good or not, but it has potential and i'll keep my eye on it. I hope a demo at least is released though, and more information eventually. I know it's not likely that Notch is going to implement a leveling system etc (he posted that once...no clue if he has changed his mind though) but a game that is similar to minecraft with more combat, equipment and leveling options would really make me happy.

I personally don't care about graphics...it's gameplay that I care about. Being able to create a character and level it, use your mind to build the character and then test your build against various challenges (especially in combat) is what I really enjoy. Add that to a minecraft type engine (in any form) and i'll be in heaven.

exactly what i was thinking as i watched it.
If someone walked up to me and said "what if there was a game like minecraft except in 2D" I wold kindly ask them what kind of drugs they were on. After watching the video it doesn't look like they were on anything but *puts on sunglasses* The minecraft bandwagon (yeahhhhhh!!)
You should of said the Mincraft Mine Cart.

I don't think I'll be buying it, after all I already have minecraft so there I don't see the point in buying a 2D imatation.

To be honest first thing i thought was fusion of metroidvania and MineC since the combat and getting material to do it betters seems to be in higher focus.

I will give it a look if it's cheap.

Honestly shame on you people if you get stuck crying about rip offs.

This is minecraft rip off

I have to say, it looks pretty cool. The water physics are fucking sexy, and it looks like great fun with some friends.

I'm not sure why every is relating it to Minecraft though, it's a randomly generated world made up of blocks you can rearrange. That's about all there is connecting them (though I guess that's all there is to Minecraft).

Minecraft is effectively a digital Lego simulator with random nasties at night. This looks like a frantic multiplayer sidescrolling brawler with 'destructo-building' added for good measure.

It's definitely interesting, and I might give it a go, but I don't know if it'll have any long lasting appeal.

Looks Awesome, the more people realise how fun this style of game is the more good versions of it we can see! Minecraft is good but even a small variation could give us a much needed change whilst sticking to what we like!

It looks interesting, but i probaly won't play it. It seems like it's supposed to be played in multiplayer and is impossible in singleplayer.

To be fair, Minecraft is a rip off of an earlier game as <url=http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Infiniminer>well.
I still enjoy Minecraft, and I don't mind the rip off-ness. Minecraft is much better than Infiniminer as well. I just don't like it when people scream "INNOVATION!" when its not really at all =|

Just because it's got mining in it people automatically assume it's a ripoff of minecraft?

Get out of mojang's arse. This focuses on a completely different aspect of gameplay.
He compared it to minecraft himself.

Wow, I read about this in Notch's tweet just before I saw this thread.
Anyway, every game like minecraft that isn't minecraft (3D or not) owes at least half of its profits to Mojang, as far as I'm concerned.
Seriously, cloning a core concept to build off the success of another (unaffiliated) game or developer is just downright dishonourable.

And does half of Mojang's money belong to ToadyOne of Dwarf Fortress fame then?

More enemies, better combat, npcs, and more... maybe you should watch the vid before you start blindly hating hit.
I have watched the video. I can confirm it looks, and this is the technical term, "fucking pointless". Especially when you can run Minecraft using some pubic hair, a rock, and a hamster running in a wheel.

Tons of questions about it though and I don't see anything but the one trailer video on the website.

Can you enjoy the game solo? Those bosses look like they were made to fight with multiple characters for instance.

Is there a leveling system? Different weapons etc to fight with?

How does crafting work etc.

Tons of stuff that would need to be answered. A demo of the game would also be very useful although the trailer does make it look worth playing. Still really need to have more information.

So then whats my computers excuse for not being able to run it?
Have you actually tried it on minimum and reduced the draw distance?
Well no but i think even if i did my computer couldnt run it, its got a real issue with any game that above the level of a flash game

no game is really, but my point was, this game is trying to ride on minecraft's coat tails, and without even try to sugar coat it, all they have done is made combat a little more frequent, and made the game a whole lot more casual and (im assuming) accessible.

I have to say, I'm not interested in this at all.
It looks like it's trying to appeal to two very separate crowds, and will not do well at getting the attention of either.

If you're a fan of building things, you probably already own Minecraft and will have no reason to buy this, if you're a fan of combat, you're probably playing a game featuring your preferred choice of murder.

The two genres don't fit very well at all, so forcing your players to partake in both aspects will turn people off.
I like both, but if I'm building I'd rather not be killing things, and if I'm killing things I don't really need to be building in the same game. Keep the genres seperate.
