I'm a vegetarian so I hear these phrases fairly often; 'how do you get your protein?', 'is that why you're so pale/thin?', 'nothing vegetarian tastes good' and the always hilarious 'if you love animals so much, why do you eat all their food?'
That last one's not really a misconception but it stills earns my hate.

That the phrase 'I could care less' is just what stupid people say when they mean 'I couldn't care less'. 'I could care less' implies that you care very little, but you probably could care a bit less. It's a bit like sarcasm, it's difficult to get across via writing.

I don't like how people get their firearms mixed up. There is a difference between submachine guns, assault rifles, and machineguns. A lot of people will just call all of the stated a machinegun. Also, it's annoying when people call any rifle with a scope a sniper rifle. It's not that complicated, seriously.

That Australians ride kangaroos...
That's preposterous, every decent fan of The Simpsons know you can't, the only things you need to watch out in Australia are Hitler and the giant boot.
I'll have you know disparaging the boot is a bootable offense.

People from the United States are the only "Americans" in the world. There are two Americas each with multiple countries yet only people from the United States seemed to be Americans.

Thomas Edison was the greatest inventor ever and he invented the lightbulb.

No, he just stole all his ideas from tesla and hardly invented anything. He was generally an asshole.
You also need to remember that Tesla designed a few things for Edison and Edison promised money...

Said funds never arived (funds were back then $50 000{according to the interwebs so well...}).

So Tesla is a great chap and Edison is not (no suprises really). Also as an Australian it makes me happy that one of the greatest inventors (in my opinion) was born a Serb and NOT American (Not to knock America but it is nice for a change{also alot of inventors are not but are rarely noticed in common knowledge hence why I singled out Tesla}).

OT:
Also I am sick of people thinking all Punks and Goths are Emo...

Don't ask why just trust me that it pisses me off!! (I am not part of said subcultures)

EDIT: I AM ADDING THIS

-Thinking that Muslim extremists are more of a threat than Christian extremists.
I am inclined to disagree, Christian extremists are much fewer (Now days) than their Muslim counterparts, but I suppose they also have better access to equipment, because the majority would be in the developed world, but I think that it is nullified by the number difference.
Really?

In my studies I have observed that Islamic people are just as nice as Christians (and just as hostile as the case may be). The problem in my opnion is the media. It is merely a small number but as the culture is so different it ends up like trying to compare Romans to Gauls. They are simply two different cultures that have a bad history; and as a member of one there is a bias associated with the other.

/rant

looking back on it now I may have gone off topic..
basic point is, is that both religions have different ethics and do not allways agree. As a result some of the more extreme people on either side get see only the negatives of the other and then push their own opinions far to strong. And these people although few are the ones the media interview.

The misconception that we merely have 5 senses.
http://harvardmedicine.hms.harvard.edu/fascinoma/fivesenses/beyond/extra.php

That everyone east of Germany speaks russian, and russian only... though that misconception seems to be receding these days, thankfully. I mean it has been twenty years or so since the collapse of the USSR, one would imagine that's plenty of time to find out that there are languages other than russian spoken in these parts, and that not all of them are slavic languages.

The common misconception that penguins cannot fly.
Strap a jetpack to 'em and they'll fly. With ease. Hur hur hur.

That irregardless is a word. It isn't.

And yes, I've actually had someone ask me that before.
ha I know your pain, some people seem to think everyone in Texas is a cowboy, ride horses around and have six shooters on our hips and ten gallon hats.
Of course not everyone in Texas is like that. Only your politicians are.

That a given religious text is, literally and word-for-word, the precise and exact will of God, and is not susceptible to misinterpretation.

There's not many people who believe that, but the ones that do exist make it awfully hard for everyone else.
This. This was going to be my answer. I mean, really guys? One single god created us and everything? Ok. :|

That being past the age of physical maturity means you're emotionally mature and intelligent.
That being under the age of physical maturity makes you a emotional child who's stupid as all hell.
That being physically mature means that you know best and everyone who's younger than hyou is a stupid sheep waiting for you to educate them.

I hate the fact that every thinks the US treats immigrants poorly, compared to almost every other country in the world, (damn Canadians are polite), the US treats them almost apologetically.

Well I am sure not everyone thinks that... but the majority at least. But hell I could be wrong and only half of everyone. Or a quarter. or maybe a tenth.. And if that is the case... I'm sorry... [sub]Don't hate me...[sub] I'm sorry...[/sub][/sub]

That people from New Jersey are like people from the 'Jersey Shore'.

My partner is from New Jersey and every time I tell someone that, they istantly bring up the Jersey Shore.
